First Married Girl in Country Returns to School

I lived in Midland Park from 1952-1959. It was a nice little town to grow up in, and I loved the schools. I remember when the "Junior-Senior High School" was built in 1957 and the excitement of going to a brand-new school was wonderful. They had pastel-colored desks -- I wonder if they still have them? I lived close to the school, so I didn't need to take the bus; it was only a several-minute walk for me.

I remember when a young girl, 16 years old, eloped with her boyfriend to Elkton, Maryland and then returned to high school in order to graduate the following year. I won't mention her name, but I'm wondering if anyone reading this remembers that event. She was the very first girl in the entire country to marry and then be allowed to return to school. It was quite a scandal in those days! Midland Park was a very straight-laced town; I don't know how it is now, but this incident caused quite a stir, that's for sure. If anyone remember this, please email me at: everly@earthlink.net, as I love to reminisce! The girl who did this was actually a very beautiful and talented young lady and the best cheerleader I've ever seen, even to this day. Most of the parents were up in arms over her being permitted to return to school, but in the end she won out and I'm glad she did. I understand she received mail from all over the world, and I remember reading magazine articles about her. She was ahead of her time! I think everyone who knew her would have fond memories of her because she was such a nice young lady. Tragically, I learned that she died young in a car accident many years ago. So please -- someone write to me, anyone who remembers this. Midland Park was a wonderful little town. My family moved from there in 1959, and although I love where I am now living (still in northern NJ) I have very nice memories of the street I grew up on, Zimmer Ave. The school system was terrific and I enjoyed 7th and 8th grades especially. So I hope to hear from somebody who lived in MP during the fifties; come on, make my day!
