My husband and I are thinking about moving to the area. We have a two year old son, and we're looking to find a place that is safe to raise kids, with quality school systems, JOBS, and housing that's affordable. What can you tell me about midland that might help us make this decision? Thank You!

Considering you have a two year old son, don't come to Midland! There's more kids that are just punks than the ones that are actually going to go somewhere in life. Expect your car or your house broken into, and hearing about heroin and crack bust every other day. It's no where to raise a child, and deffinently no place you'd go to look for a job.

Midland is a nice place to raise a family. The schools are better than most. Yes we have problems with drugs and crime. But compared to other communities it is better. We don't have drive by shootings on a weekly basis. The job market isn't very good for your average person. It seems that you need a 4 yr degree to do most anything. Chemical and engineering seems to be what the biggest demand right now. You just have to choose your home carefully and make sure you have a job before you move. I have spent a lot of time in Alpena as my ex was from there. Between the 2 Alpena has my vote. I like woods and country living. Midland has a lot to offer for the right person. Just make sure you are that person.

If you do move to Midland do NOT look for a place around the down town area. Alot of drugs around that part. Closer to the mall area is nice. You are going to run into bad parts where ever you are. I do have to agree, I`m sure even in Alpena there is drugs, but it is nice there! Jobs are hard right now. Yes there is a heroin problem but I think the new problem is meth and bath salts. Either way, mind altering habits that will eventually have them stealing to help provide their habit. You will run into this where ever you live. But, on the bright side, we don`t have shootings or drive bys! ha

I lived in Midland for over 25 years, raised a family there. Moved when I retired a few years ago. I lived near downtown. Still have friends there. It was and from what I hear from friends still is a wonderful place to raise a family. Drugs are everywhere today but Midland is not a nest of drugs and drive by shootings. I am not sure what Recovering is talking about. Every city has problems but Midland has less than most. It is a good place to raise a family.

I was born and raised here and this has been a wonderful community. No, it is not without drugs or violence but so far it has remained a good place to raise children and work and live. It is a community I would recommend!

You don't even live in Midland who are you to judge? I have lived here for more than 20 years and raised my 3 children here. I sure wouldn't raise my children here it is were as bad as you make it out to be. EVERY town has its share of kids who get into trouble but Midland has a lot to offer to keep kids busy and out of trouble if they are supervised and have good parenting at home.

Jobs well that is another story...not a lot of job opportunities that pay worth while unless you work for Dow or Dow Corning.

I just moved back to Midland, MI, a year ago and I love it here. Everything is close. The schools are great! I have a son in LD classes and NONE of my other got help like he does even with an IEP in Ohio, Florida, Washington, or Nebraska! It's a great place to live. There's lots of colleges, schools of choose, etc. Ask me anything, I'll tell you. If it's not here, there's many cities and towns close by. I lived here in the 60s and I came back.
