My aunt just told me that she saw a load of gypsies on the side of 431 earlier today. She didn't know if they were broke down or if they were trying to set up shop.

I called the city police and they are supposed to check up on them and get them moving on out of town. This time there are only 2 campers and a station wagon, so hopefully there won't be too much trouble in getting them out of town and hopefully across the county line into Barbour county.

When these people came thru a year or so ago the crime rate in the area shot thru the roof. I think we had more robberies, burglaries and breaking and entering in that one week than we had the for the whole remainder of the year.

If you travel on hwy 431 and see these people, call the Headland Police (or Henry Co Sheriff if outside the city limits) and they will run these people off immediately.

I didn't see them, but I don't think these are gypsies that you saw. Besides that, I think you were trying to make your screen name as 'someone who knows'. The way you have it doesn't make much sense at all.

I think what you saw was one of the religious singing groups that came into Dothan for the Toadlick event this past weekend. It was probably them heading back home. Don't be so quick to judge everyone you see in a camper or motorhome caravan as being a gypsy.

In fact, what you said about the crime rate going up due to the gypsies last year is just not true. Gypsies do not engage in theft. Their livelyhood depends on getting along with the local townfolk. The myth about gypsies all being tramps and theives is just that, a myth.

People shouldn't be so judgemental and listen to stereotypes. Gypsies perform a much needed service to the rest of us, telling fortunes and allowing us to talk to the spirits of our dead who have passed to the other side. You can also get potions and herbs from them for natural healing, which is much better for you than those chemicals that those doctor quack try to get you to take.

You will never meet a people as happy and as joyful as the gypsies, always quick with a song and a dance. They have a proud tradition and a way of life that you just do not understand.

So next time you see some gypsies passing thru town, don't call the cops on them like the other poster advised, but stop and talk with them a bit, get your fortune told and enjoy their spirited song and dance around the campfire.

Gypsies raise their children to believe that it is ok to take advantage of people if they are too stupid to catch them at it. Being con artists and charlatans is how they earn their living.

I'll bet you got all your information from that song that says that all gypsies are tramps and thieves.

You should do a little more research before casting dispersions on a entire culture.

I try not to be so prejudice, so I won't stoop to calling you a clueless ignorant redneck bigot.

But please try to get your information from something besides pop records. Jerimiah may have been a bullfrog, but he really wasn't anyone's good friend, and Puff the Majic dragon does not really exist except in your weed smoked dreams.

Fortune telling, talking to the spirits of the dead, and selling potions are all examples "gypsy services" you mentioned that are actually just scams.

Put your pitchfork and torch away and do some reading on who gypsies really are. Looks like all you know are the stereotyped gypsies from 1950s TV shows.

Have you ever seen or met someone who is a real gypsy? Not one of these fake local people who claim to be gypsy spiritualists (who are scammers). I'm talking about a true, born and bred gypsy who can trace their gypsy heritage way back and who still live the gypsy lifestyle. I doubt it.

People, gypsies travel thru Headland all the time. It is nothing new, they've been traveling thru Headland ever since there was a hwy 431 and even before that.

You don't notice them as much any more because they don't usually use their old horse drawn caravans like they used up up until the mid-80s or so.

Now you just have to look for a string of junky motorhomes and station wagons. In fact, if you see a station wagon nowadays, 9 times out of 10 it is going to be full of gypsies. Find the station wagon and then look for the motorhomes.

NEVER stop if you see gypsies pulled over on the side of the road. They like to put their younger childern right on the edge of the road in hopes you'll feel sorry for their plight and stop to offer them some help. But it is a trick. If you stop, they'll rob you and could even steal your childern if you have any in the car with you.

I don't know how many times kids have gone missing only to find the sometimes years later traveling with the gypsie caravans. I even remember my grandmother trying to scare us kids into being good by threatening to take us down to the edge of town and sell us to the gypsies.

Back then Headland would not let them camp inside the city limits, so they would go to just past the city limits sign and set up camp on the side of the road. They would pretend to be broke down if the cops stopped to check, but they wouldn't leave until the cops finally came back out and cracked some heads.

So, just so you know, there are indeed gypsies traveling up and down hwy 431 on a regular basis, so watch out.

If you ever were a cop (which I highly doubt), then you were a public official and therefore you should know better than coming on a public forum and making slanderous comments that show you prejudice for an entire culture of people.

I'll bet you arrested a couple dozen black people too, but you won't say any of this about them because that would be politically incorrect and might cause you trouble. But it's okay for you to make sweeping judgements about some other group of people.

I am half gypsy and I have never been in trouble with the law a single day in my life. Neither has my parents or my kinfolks or ANY gypsies that I have had the downright pleasure to know.

Yes we live a different life than you do. But so do the Amish. We do things our own way, the way we have been doing them for centuries. We don't ask anything of you gadjes except that you leave us alone and let us live in peace the way we chose to live.

For America to be the so-called Land of the Free and Home of the Brave, you are a very close-minded bunch of people. You automatically hate and fear anyting that is the slightest bit different. If American was truly the Land of the Free, then this should be a paradise for the gypsy, as that exactly describes our way of life and our culture. Freedom.

Freedom to roam, freedom from government control, freedom to live our lives the way we see fit and to raise our children in our own old ways. But there is no real Freedom in the US. You must conform, you must live by someone elses rules and by their beliefs. You can't think freely, you can't have your own opinion, you can't live any other way except the way you are told to live. You are not free to keep your own cultural identity.

And every where you go, you get the same reaction from the townies. Always the same lies about being crooks, tramps, thieves. Always tales about potions and palm reading. I do admit that gypsies do have a history of such things, but that is in the past. Gone are the gypsy caravans, the sideshows, the palmreaders and spiritualists. What few that do survive do it out of their homes now and have to be licensed and controlled by the so called government of the free.

Just because the con-artist way of life is part of Gypsy culture does not make it any less illegal to defraud people!

They'rrrrre Baaaaack.

Gypsies spotted again on 431 in Headland.
This time headed south.

My guess is that they're heading to Panama City to do 'home repairs' down there during the off season now that schools starte back.

I counted 4 RVs, 2 station wagons and at least 5 pickups in their caravan this time pulled over on the side of the road.

I don't know how long they had already been there, but they were still there when I came back from Dothan 3 hours later. Haven't been back out to see if they've moved on yet or not.
