I am a Muskegon resident, an animal lover that has a passion for grooming. I was recently employed in a large corporate grooming salon in my area, until leaving on good terms. I am equipped with all of my own grooming tools and essentials willing to come and offer my services and volunteer time to the Allegan County animal rescue. After hearing the news, I immediately tried to contact the shelter to tell them what I had to offer. It was devastating to hear what had happened and especially sad to read about how hard it was for the shelter. The news reports, as well as the shelter voice recording, said how overwhelmed they were and how they desperately needed Vets and Groomers; any help they can get. I was very eager to assist and bring down supplies. I was unable to get a hold of the shelter, after numerous calls and emails, that were un-returned, so i decided to act. I quickly went out to local businesses in my community to tell them about this horrible act and what they can do to help. I offered people to drop off donations (of any form) to my house. I received some donations, and I also went out to buy some myself to offer, along with planning on giving them cash that I had been saving and figured that this would be a great cause to use on.
When a volunteer and I went down there we were speechless at our first impression of the Shelter. There was a large crowd of people looking to volunteer and adopt, as well as us there offering our free time and goods as well. The shelter workers were not allowing people into the facility, people were waiting for hours, they were so unbelievably rude to everybody. I observed a very well off couple in front of me, very eager to adopt and rescue a pet, very upset that they had been standing there for two hours and the way they were being treated; they left with disappointment. I tried to get a workers attention to tell her about my act of courtesy, but was blown off and ignored. After a couple attempts of trying to get somebody to hear what i had to say they said they did not need my services, and that was it. I explained how I had to completely re-arrange my schedule, took the time to pack everything I thought I would need, brought down donations to give including my own money to offer, all in my truck thatís a gas hog.
So here I am left in frustration. I can not believe how much help they claimed they needed, especially pointing out that they desperately needed vets, "groomers", and money. So, as a groomer, I ran to help; picking up a volunteer and donations from my community. I feel like this whole thing was so dramatically over publicized!! I am still in disbelief about how they treated me and everyone else I observed. Feel like I wasted my time, actually let me rephrase that, I DID waste my time, the time of my volunteer, and all the money I put into this unfortunate event! I guess I can walk away proud of myself for trying to help a cause, and I advise everyone else to think twice about going that extra mile to help organizations like this. The Allegan County animal shelter gave their cause a bad image.
