does anybody out there know anything about the old south brewery from early 1900s where was it located i would really like to know that and there used to be a sanitarium from that time also where? where? where? if you look at some of those old pictures of middlesboro from the 1900s, it would make you sad because there were alot of lovely , big buildings that are gone now. why is that? it looked like mboro had a really great start and then now all you see is banks and resteraunts. we dont need all that crap we need more factories to move here so we can prosper!!!!!!

Middlesboro's "past" is still here in my opinion. Aint nothing changed. Only the store owners have moved out because cant nobody afford to buy from them. This town will be labeled as a "ghost town", not the Magic city...

We grew up in the 70's and 80's, it was a great place. We were able to walk, ride bicycles all over town. Do you remember hanging out on 30th street on the weekends? Such good memories. Families were close, my grandmother and great aunts took me with them everywhere.

It's a different place now. When I was growing up, we hardly ever heard of drugs, drinking was the worst thing we did. Going over the mountain to get wine coolers.

I have thought of moving home so many times, I would in a heart beat if it were the same place.

I remember the Battles grocery, Abundant Life Fellowship with Pastor Ely, the skating rink on Cumberland Ave, and the "fancy" furniture at Ball Brothers.
I went to Abundant Life with my grandmother in the 70's and early 80's. Pastor Ely was the pastor then. My grandmother was Mildred Burch.

I have thought so many times about moving home, I live in northern VA, been here for a long time. I had such a great childhood, grew up in the 70's and 80's. I would love to be able to give my kids that kind of life, carefree, where people cared about each other. Where people knew your family, where you came from and always looked after you. When I come home to visit, it's so sad. Most of the people strung out on pills or drugs, so different than the place I grew up. My dad lives on 12 acres in Middlesboro on a sort of farm. He keeps his house locked up, windows closed 365 days a year because he is so afraid someone is going to rob him. He swears you can't leave anything out or it will get stolen.

I am firm believer that Middlesboro can be salavaged, but there would need to be some major changes. Clincs would need to start up to get everyone off of the pills, drugs. I live 20 miles out of DC and the drug problem here isn't nearly as bad this close to that kind of large city as it is in Middlesboro. People's mentality would have to change, put in methodone clincs, rehab centers, its alot better than drug dealers getting rich and families and older people getting robbed to support someones habit. Jail is no deterent for a drug user, they need help!! Make the county wet, take in some of the tax dollars off the sell of alcohol instead of giving it to TN. Having the county dry is not stopping anyone from drinking, it just forces them to drive a mile out of their way across the mountain. Use the tax revenue to invest back into the city, family programs, treatement centers, etc. Encourage people to take pride in their city again, to be proud to be from Middlesboro.

Reading through the posts here so many of us have great experineces, memories of our childhoods, spending time with grandmothers, grandfathers, great aunts and uncles. There is no place like home, where your family is, where your roots are. We are lucky to have such amazing memories. So many people, children from larger cities are lucky to see their grandparents a couple of times in their lifetime or a couple of times a year for holidays. I gained so much of who I am spending the time I did with my elders, listening to their stories. Middlesboro is full of history and there is so much there worth saving.

Lets not anyone forget the business in Middlesboro that won the Good Housekeeping Award for cleanliness, both in the business and those coming into the business.
THE MAJESTIC HOTEL.
So clean, no one ever had to worry about AIDS going into that business.
I can still remember the names of most of the clientel that would come into that joint,
to spend their hard working money for a
little enjoyment that their wives at home
could not give them.
Some wives would walk in, bringing their kids
with them, searching for the daddies.
Do i need to list the names of some of those daddies?
