Middlesboro, also spelled Middlesborough, is a city in Bell County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 10,384 at the 2000 census.[1] The entire Micropolitan area has a population of 68,890 which includes Bell and Whitley counties. It is the principal city of the Middlesborough, KY Micropolitan Statistical Area.
The city was incorporated in 1890 as "Middlesborough", named after the town of Middlesbrough on the south bank of the River Tees in North Yorkshire, England. However, the U.S. Post Office began using the spelling "Middlesboro" in 1894
Middlesborough lies in the Appalachian mountains, created some 500 million years ago during tectonic shifts. 300 million years ago a meteor (estimated between 350 and 1,800 ft across) slammed into the mountains creating the crater in which the city is situated. Without this opening in the mountain region, the creation of the city would never have happened. After further geologic movements, rivers filled the crater basin until it overflowed southward into present-day Tennessee, creating the Cumberland Gap. Eventually the water broke through a similar ridge line to the north, creating the Cumberland River.
