So the real question is: why aren't persons who think Democrats are socialists or (worse) communists voting for Barr rather than a centrist like McCain?
because there are extreme airheads on the right as well as the left. But when they are on the left and are the leaders of a major political party, then run like hell to the center if need be.

Vote for Mr Clean http://www.votenader.org

Messrs McCain and Obama are darlings of Wall St speculators and war mongers and enablers and appeasers of the Bush-Cheney-Pelosi regime.

It's time for real change.

He is neither. He is just a lying, racist, shallow man of no accomplishments, who has nasty friends, no experience, and a dubious education and questionable birth.

After all that, he ain't a bad guy.

Entertaining concept and great writing. Smart readers from any political persuasion would agree on that, in my opinion.

I oppose most of the Courant's latest changes, but this voice, this idea, should remain. Really fresh and good!

There is no way McCain can win Connecticuts electoral votes. It isn't even close. However, it's still important for everyone to participate in the election. There are still lots of local positions and issues to decide. It isn't just about electing a president.

Bush is the biggest Socialist I can think of by your standard...He spread our wealth around to destroy and rebuild Iraq (a country that had nothing to do with 911)...in doing so created the biggest national debt in our history (but Dems are the Big Government party only?)...created unofficial taxes in bailouts...didn't regulate the ballooning housing industry when the GOP had control of both houses and the White House, during the peak of the housing boom....why don't you recognize the economic benefits of middle class spending on small businesses... because that sure is not happening now...none of the wealth has trickled down to me over the last 8 years...I graduated college at the end of the Clinton years...have only saw my dollar become less and less valuable since...it took me until I was 31 to buy my first house...I got a fixed rate with 20% down..and now I am watching my home value go down...while other peoples interest rates go down...I work, pay taxes and I am voting for Obama because in my whole life I have not seen a GOP president who has not raised the debt (Clinton was the only to even consider it)...With them I keep noticing that our Plutocracy keeps growing while our Middle Class keeps struggling more...we are far from Socialistic...and not close to a (to the GOP lie of a Capitalistic Utopia) society of free competition based on hard work and creative solutions, but a Government Plutocracy where our big businesses have bought their status and their right to inflate prices to pay their crooked CEOs millions, to make unsound choices for quick profit, and destroy our markets...a 3% raise on taxes on people making over 250k seems unlikely to create Socialism or even put a dent in our Plutocracy...W. Bush's father had it right when he called it "Voodoo" economics...McCain must be the witch doctor and you the followers...good luck on election day...I have the right to think you Republicans are delusional and simple-minded..and you have the right to think the same of me...yet, I also realize that politicians love this because the more we fight over who is the lesser of two evils the more Washington stays crooked...God bless our Republic no matter who wins next week...

Wow, its amazing to me that the deperate McCain camp can label a "tax cut" as "redistributing wealth" and it actually resonates with you people. We've had 8 years of these crazy scare tactics and all its gotten us into is a baseless war in Iraq, the worst financial crisis our country has seen in decades and the loss of jobs to other countries.
At the least, you are alive in America. Able to complain. Everyone is a military leader now. If Bush followed everyone's opinion to attack Afghanistan to find Bin Laden, America 'd be a bazillion more in losses, more casualties in war. The land of the Afghan is brutallic. Watch documentaries on Afgan. Iraq is nothing.

All of what you mention - this is what happens in war times. Terrorism is war. It came to America 8 years ago. Iraq was not a loss. Ask the Iraqis. It was a repressive and violent regime to its people. The Bush war gave message to Bin Laden that America means to attack and guard homeland. Bin Laden did not expect America to do so. It has made them less encouraged to attack. None has for 8 years. You can thank Bush at a few hundred dollars for each citizen. The economy is a sacrifice in war times. 911 was not a joke. It was the beginning of a different war. End of cold war. Beginning of hot war centered in Middle East, with threats to America.

But wait. Obama will bow to NATO, the world, unlike Bush and send American troops to Afghan. He spoke on it in the debate. Are you young and a woman? Be ready for the draft.

First, no one benefits when taxes go up.
The $250,000 and up category are largely not of the yachting class or Greenwich Country Club elite.
Rather, these hardworking Americans are the small business owners who live on our streets. It's the guy who owns a small trucking company in Bristol, the woman who operates a coffee shop in Collinsvilled or the pizzeria proprietor in Woodbury. These men and women comprise the heart and soul of CT's economy. They also manage to generate a plurality of the employment opportunities for individuals of all socio-economic classes.
So what happens when taxes go up? Some employers facing higher tax burdens will choose to lay off employees or cut shifts. Other employers will pass the increased cost of doing business on to consumers.
Most employers will do both. Suddenly the family of five is working less and paying more. The trucking company will charge 25 percent more for the same cargo haul, the coffee shop will fire the part-time help and the pizzeria will demand $5 more on every pie. It's a vicious cycle that makes everyone less prosperous.
Second, Obama's tax cut for 95 percent of America is little more than political smoke and mirrors designed to fool voters. For example, Obama conveniently hides the fact that 44 percent of Americans don't even pay a federal income tax.
You can't cut something that doesn't exist. Certainly, you can subscribe to "spreading the wealth" as an economic theory. It's a free country, at least until January 2009. But it troubles me that Obama has to lie about the true nature of his plan in order to get Americans to endorse it with their vote. Obama's intellectual dishonesty should also concern the Hartford Courant.
...so what would you call the Repug tactics over the course of the Iraq boondoggle? You have some nerve citing Obama for intellectual dishonesty when Bush and McBush keep running their scams on the American people (or have you conveniently forgotten the Keating 5 indictment?)

Bush & Company have been running a war without funding it for several years now. They just call their funding requests "extra-budgetary appropriations". They then use that logic to keep the war funding billions out of their annual budget requests saying that the "extra-budgetary appropriations" are only temporary and therefore shouldn't be included in the annual budget submitted to Congress.

Bush appropriates the money with no plan to repay it and no taxes to support it so the monies have been spent but no mechanism has been put in place to pay the bills for his little posturing exercise. What does he care anyway? He has created a mess and is leaving someone else to clean it up. Bush has a long history of that kind of behavior and McBush, in his own words, "has voted 90% of the time with President Bush."

Pop Quiz: Which of these quotes was said by Hitler and which was said by Obama?

A.“…our individual salvation depends on collective salvation. Because thinking only about yourself, fulfilling your immediate wants and needs, betrays a poverty of ambition.”

B.“Our nation can achieve permanent health only from within on the basis of the principle: The common interest before self-interest.”

If these two statements seem similiar, it’s because they both derive from the same philosophy: socialism. NAZI stands for “National Socialist German Workers’ Party”. The socialists of Hitler’s era aren’t much different from those of today in terms of ideology, though most socialists of the modern era are called “latte liberals”. Indeed, Hitler would’ve fit right in with such a group. He was a vegetarian, pro-abortion, an advocate for strict gun control, desirous of universal health care, and continually extolling the virtues of state control.

Someone once asked me how Obama could become a socialist. I replied by asking how he could not. Obama has been surrounded by marxists his entire life. I’m not sure that he has contacted non-marxist/socialist ideas within his close circle of friends even once.

His father was a communist. His mentor, Frank Marshall Davis, was a communist. Obama explicitly admits to seeking out marxist professors in his autobiographical work and attending socialist meetings. His close friends, like Bill Ayers the former terrorist, leadership at Trinity, all hold distinctly socialist/marxist views. Obama had the most left-wing voting record in the entire senate for 2007. He was even more radical than senators who were openly socialist.

Obama’s socialism will be an issue to voters.

O' Intelligent one full of pride and support for your candidate; watch this video and think - REAL HARD - what this symbolsim REALLY means....

Youu are the one with their head in the sand and I am sure, you will be one of the people crying the loudest when your life is negatively affecting by this lying, socialist racist.

By the way, not ONE poster has suggested why his Obama's own paternal grandmother, who boasts of her pride for his candidacy, would EVER swear she witnessed his birth in Kenya! Take a look:

Just for the record: I am an independent registered voter, previous two-time Clinton voter, Post-graduate educated professional. So no - my views of Obama don't fall into your small little view of what a McCain supporter should be.
