The accident happened at 5:30 am. The driver fell asleep. the road was CLOSED FOR 14 HOURS!!!
Now, if you drive outsde the core area Waterbury, hartford, new haven, stamford, bridgeport the dot does NOT maintain the highways especially I 84 according to well known, standard concepts of safety. There are specs for interstate highways, I84 from the NY line to waterbury does not have reflectors to define the sides of the highway, 30 % of the lights on I 84 are always out. The first priority for the dysfuntional DOT is maintain a safe I84. If the DDOT doesn't know how to do this, have their chauffers drive them 2 miles into NY any time night or day and copy what ny DOT does.

Hank I have to disagree only with your suggestion to copy NY as an example of how CT could better maintain I-84 and make it safer. The I-684/I-84 interchange in Brewster is a legendary example of terrible, unsafe design and maintenance. Especially the nefarious exit 9E from 684N to 84E with the sharp hook turn at the merge point. Many terrible accidents there for over 40 years, and they never change anything except add more SIGNS (lame and ineffective) as if it's always drivers' faults.
Also, I-684 from there to Exit 8 in Croton Falls is badly chewed up and pot-holed, has never once been resurfaced in 40+ years. While south of there (with exceptions around Katonah and the Westchester Airport) it's been repaved a few times.

I 84 is the subject. I84 in NY is a safer highway because the standards for interstates are followed re marking, reflectors, readable signs.
Yea, the 684/84 interchage is poorly designed and maintained...sort of like all of I 84 in western CT....i believe the reason lies in DDOT $ub$ervience to legislaters in Hartford , New Haven, Bridgeport and Stamford.
