I've seen these these in Europe and they seem to be well received. Think about it; they've got to be safer and more comfortable than a motorcycle, but with comparable gas milage. For most LIer's, with 10 to 20 mile commutes, they would make a lot of sense. Sure, you probably wouldn't take it across the country, but on relatively flat Long Island, why not?

I don't know if I'd want to be on the LIE in one of these. The mileage sounds ok, but not THAT ok, considering what you'll be driving. I guess we'll see how they work out. I, however, would love to have a reliable, plug-in electric car that I could commute to work, (40miles one way) and plug it in to charge at work and at home. Sort of like the GM EV-1 that was out a few years ago, then magically disappeared. I would buy one in a ny minute.

The US models come with mahogany or oak finshes and brass handles so they will look nice on the altar at the driver's funerals. Direct from the LIE to the funeral parlor, just scoop 'em up.

Maybe I'll get one to use as a tender for my SUV for trips to Meglomart.

I saw one of these at WholeFoods next to a Mini and the difference was amazing. What I don't get though is the rather underwhelming fuel economy. Corollas have achieved these numbers for the past eight years. Furthermore a 1985 Honda CRX, which was larger than the SMART car, got almost 60MPG. I'm not impressed.

Why I won't buy this car: 1. 33 mpg isn't fantastic, the yaris gets about 30 mpg, and my car gets about 27 mpg now. 2. Buying a new car isn't the best thing for the environment, is still requires oil and energy to create that 1800 lb car. 3. It's only a 2 seater, shouldn't we be promoting carpooling? 2 seaters aren't practical at all. 4. No, it isn't safe. Accidents are called so for a reason; you never know who it's going to happen to and what the damage will be, and these cars would get the most damage if it hit a Mini. 5. There's no cargo seat, where do you put groceries, presents, sports gear.. I don't think you have room for a pencil case back there. So no, I don't see these taking off. BRING BACK THE ELECTRIC CAR!!!!!!!

A 3 cylinder 2 passenger car that ONLY gets 33 mpg with a sticker price of $16,999 and they call it the "Smart Car?"

My 4000 pound 94 Buick 9 pasenger Buick Roadmaster with a 350 V-8 Corvette engine gets 21 mpg locally and 25 mpg on the highway.

This is pure "MARKETING" scam. On New York roads with it's 15 inch donut wheels and low ground clearence this "Smart Car" won't last 2 years and anybody who buys one "Isn't very Smart."

Stick to the already proven Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla if you are "Smart,"

They love it b/c of it's size...not because it's oce-friendly.
True- they just drive them up onto the sidewalk like Vespas.

I got hit sitting still in a 1992 COUGAR and 2 surgeries later and 1yr later still in recovery--NO WAY JOSE!
my vote is with the LIE to the funeral home person!!!--give us a four seater with great gas mileage, plenty of crash bars and side air bags. and stop making them all look like small space ships--cant tell cars apart anymore--what happen to STYLE!!!!!!!

You have not seen the crash tests on youtube. One of these tore the face off of a W140 Mercedes in a head on crash. The Smart simply bounced off and the passenger compartment was completely intact.

The W140 is the body style in which Princess Diana persihed.

im gonna buy one, since it weighs 1800 pounds, then im gonna put a turbocharged ford 331 tfs headed stroker small block in it with a 200 hp nitrous shot.im gonna drive up and down dpa in it all night long{it will be converted to rwd of course}with 28 inch tall slicks and 3 inch exhaust.
it will now weigh like 2200 pounds and go roughly 8's on the street all day and get 12 mpg.ill street race it daily too on edison avenue.oh ill also fuel it up with strictly 103 octane since thats almost cheaper than regular gas is anyway now.

Exactly...a honda civic or fit gets 35 mpg and fits 4 plus luggage..at least that's practical, and still far better for the environment than any of the hybrids.

Funny there's no crash data for this thing with a lawn mower engine and bicycle tires, now that's smart! I'm sure you'll see these bugs on the LIE cutting in and out of lanes like its a porsche. And this guy's a software engineer, haha
