This is great, now I have a place to bring my Bull Mastif and my pitbulls. They'll love it! Roaming free to play with the other dogs. Yummy.
Great - I'll know not to bring my dog this this park. I'd rather he didn't become dessert for your dogs.

The requirements for membership regarding the Middle Island dog park have been posted on the site. All potential park patrons are encouraged to view the listing at www.suffolkcountyunleashed.com
The "requirements" are UNBELIEVABLE !!!!

Typical CROOKhaven always with their hand out trying to rape the taxpayers every chance they get.
Can anyone tell me what other dog park on LI makes you get a $25 permit, pay $5 per dog on the permit then only allow you to bring 2 dogs ??
I have 4 boys, how do I decide which 2 get to go play? How does crookhaven think the other 2 will feel when they realise their "brothers" got to go someplace good and they didnt ??
What about a regular park, lets be fair here. If your going to limit people who have k9 children to only 2 at a time at the dog park, then people with hairless children should be limited to 2 at a time at people parks!!!!

No, because pets deserve to be on this planet just as much as humans do. I know quite a few people who have been saved because of the companionship of a pet.
So what your saying is pets should start paying taxes? What next NYS drivers license for dogs.

I totally agree. They should ticket K9people when they urinate in public and smell each others Butt. Can't all K9people and Humanpeople just get along.

Just to set the record straight, the new dog parks at West Hills in Huntington and Blydenburgh in Hauppauge were the result of extended efforts of Ginny Munger Kahn and Barbra Buscareno of LIdog.org , and Suffolk County Legislators Jon Cooper, Steven Stern and John Kennedy. Gina Lewis and Suffolk Unleashed commenced business well after the plans for these parks had been formalized.

I am all for the dog park. Route 25A is littered with vacant buildings, prostitutes, clothes bins that are overflowing, and garbage. It looks like we live in a ghetto. At least a dog park will add a little life to the area and allow an area for people to come and enjoy the animals. Our town needs a face lift. I don't mind for one moment that my tax dollars go to a dog park, it's better than spending it on another low income housing development or in someone's pocket.

This park will be a membership only dog park with an attendant on duty during hours of operation, and unlike other off leash areas, there will be rules in place. The rules will be strictly enforced, there will be a consistent park stewardship plan in place, and all pups will be screened through the "Dangerous Pup" database before being granted membership. Children under 12 years old will not be allowed, and this is to ensure their safety. Just as baseball parks are not for pups, pup parks are not for small children. And yes, dog parks can foster kennel cough, which is similar to a pup catching a cold, and is not dangerous in an adult pup. Your best defense is to go to the vet and request the intranasal spray for bordatella. As far as any other major diseases, I am not aware of any. The chances of anyone bringing a severely ill pup to the pup park are nil.
If you would like more information regarding the membership requirements to Middle Island, please visit www.suffolkcountyunleashed.com The opening day will be posted on the site as soon as we are informed-

Thanks Ed- I did clarify that with Newsday- that was an error on the reporters part, and Suffolk County Unleashed had no part in any county parks- with Connie Kepert's huge assist, Suffolk County Unleashed secured the largest dog park on Long Island within 7 months of becoming a formal organization and reversed a decades long rule of no pups in Town parks- thank you Connie and the Town of Brookhaven!

When is anyone going to 'create' space for use ATV riders that have garnered a lot more attention than dog owners? l have been a part of several dog parks within the Suffolk Parks system, and they have turned out to be nothing like they were envisioned. One in Melville was only opened early this year and there is already no grass left, and they don't even have to pay like Brookhaven is proposing. There is also a very recently opened one in Hauppauge that anyone can go to, so that is another area close to four acres that the dog owners demanded and got. When are the ATV riders going to get something? You can moan all you want about noise or tearing up the land, but go to a dog park. All you smell is dog crap and pee, and nothing but rocks and dirt after a few months...

Bill, first of all the park you are talking about in Hauppauge is only 1.8 acres, and the one in Melville is 1.75 acres- so each one is not quite 2 acres. And as there are over 600,000 pup owners in Suffolk with just barely 4 acres serving them all, I would say there is a dire need for pup parks. If you want sites for ATV's, put together an advocate group and approach the county and town just like we did- it may take years, but with determination, you will get them-
