State purchases 99 acres for preservation in Middle Island
Yaphank resident Gene Smith, with his wife Patricia, reached a $5 million agreement with the state for it to purchase his nearly 100-acre land in Middle Island.

Carmans River must be saved for all. Thank you Joe Martens NYSDEC and thank you Gene Smith the owner of the land. Mr. Smith, a Yaphank resident and Vietnam veteran who has earned four Purple Hearts, said the majority of the sale to the state will go toward his effort to help homeless veterans. Wertheim Wildlife Refuge, which is in The Carmans river, received 10 million dollars in stimulis money to build a visitation center in their woods and six hundred thousand to hire an architect. That money should have gone for the purchase of land around the Carmans River

Thanks to Mr Smith and his wife. It's people like him that make the world better for all of us and all who's efforts to obtain this land. Now if we could just find a way to get rid of all those darn ticks!!!!
