LIPA is a quasi state agency. Technically, Cuomo runs it. He was supposed to appoint a full board of directors, but he left six places empty.

That really showed some class to do that to those in the dark. Oh well, just shows how low down the union trash can be even in an emergency.

Actually no. There were so many out of town workers that LIPA had no idea what to do with them all.

LIPA didn't know what to do with them because they didn't know what was going in detail. Some are blaming the lack of a modern computer system just to track/detect problem areas and others are saying if you need a computer system for this type of damage you are already in trouble.

I don't think the 'union' issue was as big as portrayed BUT someone confronted these drivers and/or company with the 'confusing' union paperwork. Probably a union zealot who didn't have a clue of the overall damage thinking about their overtime only.

This is an issue that LIPA or National Grid should have anticipated with proper planning but we all know now they didn't prepare for squat. The local unions also need to tell their membership in a disaster union-non union bs is set aside-no paperwork,clarification or authorization needed.

You're so right! When people are cold and in the dark,the first order of business for those arriving in the first days is to get on gas stations,stores,lift stations, and water pumps,not be turned away. The help could has stood their ground but the history of union nastiness and violence didn't make it worth staying. The issue of turning down early help should be addressed as it will probably be an issue again with a shift in the weather patterns.

A flooded house can't be turned on again by repairing the outside lines.

Takes time. Lots of time. You need an inside electrician, not a line-man.

They were line-man. There was still hundreds of thousands of people whose outside lines were not fixed yet in areas where the houses were not flooded. And they were heading home...

The whole idea in an emergency is to get the transmission lines up first and get the substations on line. Then the distribution lines into the residential areas where some if not all the houses without serious damage can be turned back on. There will always be houses in each block with more damage than others so they won't be back on until repairs and inspections can be made.. Don't dwell on that fact for an excuse for the sorry treatment of those who came to help. Thank goodness this wasn't followed by a below zero blizzard.

The Shoreham Nuclear Power Plant was a completed General Electric nuclear boiling water reactor located adjacent to the Long Island Sound in East Shoreham, New York. The plant was built between 1973 and 1984 by the Long Island Lighting Company (LILCO), but never operated.

In 1983, the currupt Suffolk County Legislature voted that the county could not be safely evacuated in the event of a serious nuclear accident at the plant, and the crooked governor of New York, Mario Cuomo, ordered state officials not to approve any LILCO-sponsored evacuation plan.

On May 19, 1989, LILCO agreed not to operate the plant in a deal with the state under which most of the $6 billion cost of the unused plant was passed on to Long Island residents. In 1992, the Long Island Power Authority bought the plant from LILCO. The plant was fully decommissioned in 1994.

France derives over 75% of its electricity from nuclear energy. This is due to a long-standing policy based on energy security.
France is the world's largest net exporter of electricity due to its very low cost of generation, and gains over EUR 3 billion per year from this.
France has been very active in developing nuclear technology. Reactors and fuel products and services are a major export.
