I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore!! Stop listening to these vested profits of doom about standing up to the teachers, cops and fire districts. They are making living on LI impossible for young people or the retired. Upstate, the volunteers actually volunteer. If that is what we have, then why all these Mansions of firehouses, bars that Mulchahys is envious of, and Fire Control Centers for simple house fires. Time for consolidation and accountability. Let the real elected officials be responsible for this not some obscure Fire official who is beholden to the same ol same ol.
Don't forget that LI vollies get a pension & property tax breaks.

CORAM RESIDENT unfortunately you are the unusual exception not the rule.
MOST PEOPLE TRUST THEIR REAL ESTATE AGENTS BUT SADLY THE GHFD TAXES ARE SWEPT UNDER THE RUG.
AS GH TRIES TO REVITALIZE MANY NEW HOMES DON'T HAVE COMPARABLES. THIS IS JUST ONE OF THE MANY PROBLEMS FACING NEW HOMEOWNERS.
THERE ARE ALSO THOSE NEW HOMEOWNERS WHO "LEGALLY" IMPROVE THEIR HOMES ONLY TO FIND THEIR FIRE TAXES SKYROCKET.
IT IS A MULTI-FACETED PROBLEM AND I THANK NEWSDAY FOR BRINGING IT TO THE ATTENTION OF THE PUBLIC

I have heard the stories about buying a house in GHFD. take for instance the man who had to come up with an add'l $ 1500.00 at closing because the paperwork read Medford FD but he was in GHFD. The $ 1500.00 was to cover the add'l fire taxes.

Fairway on the woods was "Yaphank Woods" and people thought that they were moving into Yaphank, After the houses were sold, the name was changed. The first 5 houses in the community are in the Yaphank FD the rest are in the GHFD with fire taxes exceeding $ 2600.00

The new condos on Granny Rd, their documents read "Medford FD" and yet most of the condos fall into the Yaphank FD and less than 10 units fall into the GHFD.

The people in here are NOT STUPID.- just deceived.

For those who look at us and call us "Supid"? Remember, we were smart enough to discover the law which allows us to dissolve our fire district.

Blah blah blah... it all sounds good. I have lived in gh all of my life. Taxes were high before and they are now. No other fire department is going to take us up. They even came to town hall to say it. Last time these people did the petition, they said different stories to everyone. Who is coming to save my house! I want specifics. Newsday needs to get a life or atleast reporters that know how to interview more than the same five people. PS. To the people leading the charge, its funny how you all have either a mcmansion or more than one home but can talk about how broke you are.

You are mistaken. It is one of the commissioners who owns more than one home.

Thank God we live in a country where we can sign petitions against injustice. We don't all claim to be broke - we are being ripped off! Saying the taxes have always been high does not make it right! You have been abusing the community so long you think it's acceptable - well it's NOT!

Fair enough. You can show us 10 examples here, heck you may in fact have 100 examples of people who were misled. But how many of the reported 70% of the residents are actually on the borderline and had the wool pulled over their eyes?

Does everyone live within 2 or three houses from the border? Did none of them go to a legitimate real estate broker or use honest and accurate Title agent?

I'll tell you one thing, I know how much work goes into buying a house... but I would have had some serious questions if I were hit for an extra $1500. at closing. My first question would be do I still want the house at the same price when my yearly taxes were going to be $1500 more per year than I thought when I agreed upon the price. That to me would have been no less than a $10,000 price cut, but I would have asked the seller for $15,000.
( I'm sure the seller was no more interested in having the buyer walk away from the deal LEGALLY, than the buyer was to have gotten so close and having to start over house hunting. I would have addressed it as the length of the mortgage is 30 years, the additional taxes were to cost me $45,000 min over that time, so I'd eat a portion.. a large portion and ask for $15,000 break... settling for $10,000... any less and I would have gotten up from the table.)

The second question would be to my lawyer... Who was supposed to know what district the unit should have been in? Someone apparently found out, prior to the closing... so who withheld information? Who didn't do their jobs with full disclosure? Can they be held liable for monetary damages due to this?

I feel for the people who get defrauded, and let's not mistake anything here, if the deals were done correctly and the buyer has a lawyer, the seller has a lawyer, an abstract company did their work and each side had a broker... someone in fact committed an unethical if not illegal act.

Some of the anger should be going towards those people, and a LOT of the pressure should be placed on them as well to correct what you are saying is a large scale deception.

But again, I ask you, are these examples you bring up the exception or the rule?

I would rather pay and know someone is coming. If what you are saying is legit than that's fine...but who is going to cover us? That's all i really want to know and how will that work. Do we get absorded into them and then pay the same taxes or do we have to pay them for services? What happens to the fire house? Coram, MI, and Medford are far from my home. I want to know that someone is coming. Any amount of taxes isn't worth it if I don't get any service.

Do yourself a favor and call Suffolk County's Central Dispatch Center EVERY SINGLE EMERGENCY CALL IS ROUTED TO THEM AND THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR DISPATCHING THE INDIVIDUAL DISTRICTS. THE SYSTEM IS COMPUTERIZED AND VERY INTELLEGENT. IF A RESPONSE DOES NOT COME WITHIN SECONDS FROM ONE DISTRICT IT AUTOMATICALLY CALLS THE NEXT NEAREST ONE! Often times the GHFD is out on a call and so Middle Island, Coram, Yaphank, etc. is called. That is why many times you will see several dept at a scene. So, please please please stop the lies and rumors circulating for years keeping people in fear! Thank you.

WHO USED THE FUEL GHFD

Point Lookout, NY

A report into the GHFD found that there was a huge fuel usage that has not been accounted for.
The Fire Commissioner dismissed answering questions about it.
WHERE IS THE GAS? WHO USED IT?
The missing fuel, with the high price of fuel leads me to believe that the "volunteers" are helping themselves to the "free" gas. I wonder how many of their famolies are also fueling up at courtesy of the hard working taxpayer???

Even if we could afford the taxes. Why? They are unjust and unfair - The District needs to go. If this was a private corporation - it would have been bankcrupt and dissolved a long time ago. The only reason this insantity continues is because it's been feeding off the taxpaying community which is weakened and devestated by this on going tax burden. You who are supporting this financial ball and chain are very foolish and selfish. No doubt you have something personal to gain. Repent and let good people of Gordon Heights go. You have held them hostage long enough!

Your'e better off having your home burn down and become a total loss. Temporary trailer and complete new construction is better than partail renovation and a motel stay.

You are so right! Insurance companies DRAG out the partial ones and everything is compromised anyway.

Time to get rid of the Volunteer fire departments. The younger guys will have oppurtunities for good paying full time positions if they want.
The older pick your nose and eat it slobs of the Bethpage Fire Department can go and hang out at the the Crack Hotel over at Susans Pub.

Great thread! I was just going to post about this very thing (kinda)
Here it goes...
I am starting a petitions (2) in fact
1. That the Sound Beach FD change its Fire Alarm Policy to be informed of emergencies only through current technology standards ie. cell phones and beepers. The use of the very large and very loud alarm is ruining the quality of life for local residents. The decibel levels of this alarm are deafening and hurt our ears.
2. There might be reason to combine our FD with either Miller Place or Rocky Point due to the fact that when there is a fender bender in RP SB or MP all districts respond.
Sound Beach just got alot of moola from state to expand the FD meanwhile they already had 4 bays.
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!!!
If you see me in the spring.... please sign it! Wading River did the alarm thing and now they use beepers and only use the alarm for real fires!

Cost cutting has been lacking - and while no evident misappropriations, no substantial effort has been made to cut back on xpenditures...in fact spending continues...efforts to assist are rebuffed and ignored....

<quoted text> The residents refused to pass a vote for commercial zoning causing their own problems. Before they cut off their noses they need to look at other options to fix their tax burdens. Commercial zoning could do just that. The new Newsday picked up where the old one left off I see. Anyone else? Has anyone here ever seen Gordon Hts. FD? There is absolutely no misappropriations going on there, just a great bunch of people looking out for their homes and families. Good Luck GHFD. The House, The House, The House is on fire. We won't let it burn Gordon Heights will put it out.
