New Jersey Bishops Ready To Rumble Over Same-Sex Marriage - Lez Get Real

There are 19 comments on the lezgetreal.com story from Aug 27, 2009, titled New Jersey Bishops Ready To Rumble Over Same-Sex Marriage - Lez Get Real. In it, lezgetreal.com reports that:

Roman Catholic bishops in New Jersey have begun a new campaign opposing same-sex marriage. At the bishops’ direction, a 2,300-word letter was distributed in parish bulletins last Sunday. It notes long-standing Catholic teaching that marriage is “the union of one man and one woman.” It also cites a study issued by the National Marriage Project at Rutgers University that identified a broad cultural shift away from religion and social traditionalism and toward a belief in personal independence and tolerance for diverse life styles. The church feels one of the expressions of this dangerous trend towards freethinking, is the recent passage of Marriage Equality law in 6 states.

..."dangerous trend towards freethinking..."

We can't have people thinking for themselves, now can we?

Bishops really should stay the hell out of legal matters.

"a broad cultural shift away from religion and social traditionalism and toward a belief in personal independence and tolerance for diverse life styles."

Isn't that supposed to be a good thing? I thought we called that cultural and social advancement.

the CHURCH is all about OPPRESSION. And that OPPRESSION is based on nothing more than a fictional book called the bible. They need to get out of our lives. Out of more than 1,300 religions in the world, what the hell makes THEIR religion the 'word of god'??? Give me a friggin' break! Time to TAX all Religious institutions. They use the bully-pulpit to tell their cult how to vote, so TAX the hell out of them!

Quoting from the article: "It also cites a study issued by the National Marriage Project at Rutgers University that identified a broad cultural shift away from religion and social traditionalism and toward a belief in personal independence and tolerance for diverse life styles."

...personal independence and tolerance for diversity being bad things in the church's eyes why exactly?

Because 1) it weakens their control over society and 2) threatens them economically if people no longer need the church & hence stop donating to it.

So we should squelch personal independence and teach intolerance for anything that diverges from the mandated viewpoint of the Roman Catholic Church, right? After all, isn't propping them up the chief purpose of our government? No?

Oh, okay. Nevermind then. The Roman Catholic Church can take a flying leap for all I care. Stick to controlling your own flock - leave the rest of us free to wander (and marry) according to the dictates of our own beliefs.

we want to know how bishop galante mcgrath, andy walton or mcgrath publically feels about this topic we want them to give interview in south jersey papers along with our church closings
church bulletin don't count

if you respect marriage, then the camden diocese would not be closing down the churches where we were married. after alll marriage is or was a holy sacrament.

Religion is religion. All just beliefs. No proven facts. Am I wrong??? I happen to be engaged to a beautiful man and for the church to oppose this, this is taking away our rights as Americans. To all Catholic priests and attendees, you are more than welcome to leave this country to support communism.
