METROPOLIS -- Willy Jak's saw significant damage after flames broke out Saturday morning, but at the time, only one firefighter was on duty in Metropolis.

Normally, two firefighters are on duty at the station.

"For whatever reason, one of the employees called in, whether it be sick or whatever, but we try to keep ample people there at all times for the public safety," explained Metropolis mayor Billy McDaniel.

The mayor says budget problems have forced the department to cut back on the number of full time firefighters at the station.

To save money, the city has switched to a call back system that allows off-duty fire fighters to be called back during an emergency

"Why did they not respond to the call back?" asked McDaniel. "You know, we have twelve fire fighters."

Metropolis Fire Chief, Jason Morris refused to comment for this story but the mayor was thankful Massac County Firefighters helped with the fire.

"We have mutual aid agreements and things like that where the other fire departments, Massac County Fire Department, very highly qualified and it's strictly a volunteer fire department," said McDaniel. "So let's thank the good Lord that they responded."

McDaniel says he still needs to sit down with the fire chief to discuss why so few city fire fighters responded.

Willy Jak's owner's did not want to comment for this story but said they are waiting on an insurance adjuster before making plans to reopen.

Most people on the seen felt as if the fire departments done o good job in saving the building. the damage should have been worse but because the firemen done there job the building may be able to be saved.
The Mayor made cuts to the fire Department a month ago and now the first time a fire breaks out then the Mayor wants to know what happened, well it is real easy Mayor "you cut the department and they were following the directions you gave them and it has caused problems you cry foul, next thing I expect you will blame the Aldermen for the cuts you made.

If I were the county fire chief I would send a very large bill to the city council for services rendered! They canít help out the county but on the other hand they are more than willing to use our fire fighters. I am glad that our county guys helped out as that is just the kind of men that they are. The word is caring! The city council should take a lesson from this. Just the other week they were telling the county commissioners to kiss off. Isnít it just amazing how the council members have a face on all four sides of their headís. Kudosí to our county fire fighters for the way they helped out the city firemen. We are so lucky to have men of such high caliber defending our homes. We are so proud of each and every one of you and may God keep you safe when that next call for help comes into the office.

What a scumbag for BBQ Billy to blast the fire department the way he did! Maybe you shouldn't have cut the FD's budget Billy Boy! accept the blame for where it lies, and that is with you! Stop trying to pass the buck! What's next? Someone gets shot or stabbed and the county or city PD doesn't respond in a timely manner due to cutbacks are you going to blame the PD then too? Billy Boy you have clearly outlived your usefulness as Mayor and you need to resign and let someone else take over who can do the job. And as far as Corey goes, what a pussy not commenting on this story. What? Afraid of what the big bad wolf billy might do if you open your mouth? Why don't you grow a pair! Such a shame there are so few people in this city who will go against the mayor and SPEAK UP! I can count on one hand those individuals who do have some balls to speak up in this city!

sounds like to me they planned not to show up and make the city look bad, maybe they should all be fired an we go with volunteers or is it that the firemen are more upset at the 500,000 in over time being cut out then someone being laid off ???? in the meantime we have to let things burn down, for them to get approved for more overtime ???????

For your info every cutting firefighter that could respond in fact did. There are currently 3 firefighters off with injuries..the city never has in several years replaced a firefighter that was terminated...two were I believe out of town visiting family for thanksgiving weekend and one was on vacation.. now there are supposed to be 12 firefighters ...do the math.with all those that were not available to respond due to injuries and vacations ...and the vacancy..that leaves 5 fulltime firefighters to respond..and they did. Check your facts before you go spouting things. There are normally 3 firefighters on duty but with the injuries and vacancies the city can no longer at this time afford to pay the overtime to keep 3 firefighters on duty on every shift. Thank you and good day.

You would think that during Thanksgiving and people trying to deep fry turkeys and fires in general that the fire cheif would have more people on duty. I've had my time-off canceled if there weren't enough people to cover the work load. Are these firefighters any better than any other worker? Isn't the fire department being investigated about the way they double-up on overtime?

The City firemen did nothing wrong. They are following the rules set forth by the city. They were off duty due to budget cuts. Are they expected to stay home and wait for a call to come in? Bull&^%$. They are allowed to have a life. If they were not on duty they should not be required to give up the personal life. On the other hand, if they were available then they should have responded, but nobody should expect them to sit by the phone on their own time just in case....this is poor govt planning

All I want to say is that I am very thankful for every single firefighter that showed up to help........city-county whoever I think they all did a GREAT job! It is so sad that people can not be thankful for the help that was provided by all. It seems to me that the people that live in the city use county roads and the people that live in the county use city road why can't we just be good neighbors and help one another. SAD that people are always so quick to judge and never want to omit when things are not working out as they planed. As far a Corey goes leave him alone he is a GREAT person and does not derserve this mess. Worry about the real problems like the future of Metropolis.

Wow! Are you the chief making excuses for your firefighters lack of performing their jobs. Sounds like a bunch of excuses to me. Bottom line is this your dept is pissed off at the city because they slashed your overtime. It' s a disgrace that your men are willing to gamble with people's lives because of a pissing match with the city. I talked to one of your firefighters, on condition of anonymity, and he told me that he indeed deliberately did not respond to the call because he wanted to send a strong message to the city! I wonder how many others did the same thing. It is your sworn duty to protect life and property. If it hadn't been for the county responding to this we would have lost a valuable business here. And for what? If in fact these firefighters deliberately failed to respond they should be disciplined. Maybe even the fire chief himself should be asked to resign by the Mayor himself. If this wasn't a failure to repond deliberately then the call back system needs to be evaluated. Either way answers need to be sought after immediately and appropriate action taken. Maybe the entire city FD should be dissolved and the county should take over. Now that would save the city lots of money. Quite a few years ago when I was a volunteer firefighter in Indiana we had to carry red beepers with us, why doesn't Metropolis do this? Corey should be outraged at the city response to this fire and should speak out.

Isn't Metropolis part of Massac County, Don't the people in Metropolis pay County taxes the same as the people that live outside of the city limits? Why wouldn't the county fire Department respond to a fire inside the city limits after all it is in Massac county too.
I am grateful for the County Fire Department as well as the city Fire Department, all those present did a fine job and for the Mayor to go on tv and be disrespectful to the Metropolis Fire Department and to make the comment the way he did shows all he wants to do is to cut the Metropolis Fire Department back to a volunteer department. I guess he said what he did just to help cover up the poor spending practices of the past 7 years under his control.

poor spending habits runs deep in Massac county, look at all the business that have went under in the last terms of both mayors, lets see a once popular video store that shortly after it was taken over went belly up, a once popular bbq place couldnt stay afloat, oh dont we have a radio station in town that is struggling to stay afloat? maybe it isnt the mayors whoever they are fault, but poor management skills of some bussiness owners and a really bad economy
