We are looking for a home in St. George and someone warned us that the Dixie Downs area is not good, but they did not elaborate. The elementary school rates a 2 out of 10 on greatschools.com which concerns me since we have three kids. The homes seem to be more affordable there, maybe there is a reason? I'd be interested what people think.

We looked at that area too..not a very good area! I've never lived in the area but many people say theres a lot of drug deals that happen in that area, and the park near that elementary school (a block or two), is where a girl was raped and killed last year.

I live in St.George not too far from Dixi Downs. From what I heard it's not a very good place to live, most of the drug deals take place around there, also there are proplems with gangs. Not too long ago a 12 year old boy was stabbed there. Where I live I don't have any pronlems. I'm from Cal. and let me say that beside the Dixi Downs area St. George has got to be one of the safest places that I know of, also there are alot of great family things to do here. Wish you the best of luck! |

i have lived in st.george for four years and any trouble in this area are either there in dixie downs or stems from there,if you have children and looking for a safer or better area DONT waste your money going to dixie downs, cause you will only find yourself moving out of there if your a decent citizen like myself, you will see what im talking about if you choose to move there

Dixie downs elementary is a dual emerison school, meaning everyone learns spainish and english starting in kindergarten. If you speak english and live in the school boudaries you can opt out (if you do not want your child to learn in spainsh 1/2 days)and drive your child to another school.
Besides this program, dixie downs does have a higher crime rate, lots of trailers, moderate/low income apartments in its boundaries. I honestly don't think any school in washington county is that great, the way the city is built almost every school has trailers/low income housing/gang issues. Even if you buy a million dollar + home. I would not send my kids to the school, low test scores, gang issues, drugs (my niece went there for a few months in 4th grade and drugs were in 4th grade). There are plenty of better housing prices in this area but I would much rather buy a 300 sq ft smaller home or have a smaller yard or an older home and have a better school. I have personally visited every elementray school in the district and I like bloomington, bloomington hills, little valley, santa clara and horizon the best. Remember in st george a brand new school does NOT equal a good school. The last 4 years with housing sky high it is very hard to find teachers and new school can't get teachers so the older the school itself, I have found better teachers. |

I do not live in the Dixie downs area but I choose to send my son to Dixie Downs Elementary because of the dual english/spanish program it offers.
I would not buy a home in the neighborhood of Dixie downs for the reasons above mentioned. You can live anywhere in Dixie and enroll your child where you choose. I am very involved in my sons education and have found Dixie Elementary above the rest despite its reputation. I had him in a Montesory school two years ago and he was doing poorly. Most of our neighborhood kids go to Coral Cliffs and Valor High. What I see is they are doing well but my son is doing just as good but in two languages. I feel it is a fact of life that the spanish language is going to be here in our country so our children better learn it in order to succeed in life. They say it is better to learn a new language while young and my son is going into 2nd grade. He is speaking spanish with other children and doing great overall. For now I can only say don't judge a school by where it is located or when it was built. Go to that school like Ann B said and talk with the principal, teachers ect. I recommend it only if you are interested in getting your kids ready to take on the world. I believe it will only help my son pick up more languages later on as well and still get a great education. It doesn't matter where I live in Dixie I will drive my son to Dixie Downs Elementary. |

So what about Dixie Downs? All of us latinos like it because its a place where we can fit in. Take a walk to taco loco, have a taco and stop complaining. Regardless of how much you complain about Latinos we have and always will be here. The gang problem is minimal theres no attacks on innocent people and as long as your not out looking for trouble you and your kids will be fine! They made the dixie downs park nice you should go check it out. Stop being small minded, your world isnt the same as the real world.

I'm a mom of one! My hubby up N left when he was born! i was raised in St. George my whole life! When we first moved here it was to Dixie Downs in a TRAILER! Yes, Trailer! I went to Dixie Downs for all 5 grades, and i loved it! now my parents make good money, so they live in a nice house! But me and my sister just moved out back to Dixie Downs in A TRAILER!..we are young and it's cheap and all we can afford! Are park is nice and well taken care of!..i dont see why everyone is making it a big deal! It's funny that you say that there is so many trailers but really it's prob. the nicer part of Dixie Downs (coral canyon)...in fact i am a little shocked that people would say this is a bad place!..because it's not compared to the cities everywhere else!ha. But if your rich N snobby then maybe you should not even think about movin there! Because learning spanish for your kids and you know what even playing with the spanish kids would SO HURT your kid's life!.HA..Um..but it is cheaper living, and the houses are nice N all the problems metioned up above will happen every where else! N really St. George isn't a bad place at ALL!!...it's very nice!

UDA..... Mexicans... need we say more. Check into the price the border states have paid for these people who should not be here! Get rid of them all. Crime in St. George has increased 269% in the past 4 years. Guess what population has also increased.
