Painting the "A"...Wow...I began my engineering career in 1958. "Dad" Jett still participated in engineering activities...Roger Corbett was president...General Milton was often seen on campus...and we Aggies painted the "A" at the beginning of the school year. My memory has been somewhat questionable of late but I don't recall green beanies. What I recall were small skull cap type of caps with a tiny bill. They were maroon with white piping. We wore them during Freshman "indoctrination" week and, of course, while painting the "A." I met one of my best friends while we labored together on the mountain. We are still best of friends today after 52 years. I always look fondly at the "A" as it evokes many wonderful memories.

Good story, Chris; you probably know there's tons of stuff in the NMSU Archives in the Round Up and the Swastika yearbook that contain a book's worth or more of traditions, quirks, and whatnot from the early "innocent" days of NMSU, up through the mid-1960s, I'd say. Nice feature.

Back in 1985-90, the Greeks were so "in-charge" of the repainting, that any non-Greek who wanted to volunteer (me) was rudely turned away. So much for tradition back then, but also back then, the frats were a bunch of d!cks.

I miss the old prank days when students from New Mexico School of Mines (i.e. Tech) would turn the A into an M; the Aggies have never been able to do anything to the Socorro M. Too remote.

I remember being awakened from a deep sleep in my Alumni Avenue dorm room by upperclassmen early one of the first Saturday mornings of a fall 1960s semester. The object? Paint the "A" on A Mountain. Good memories!

The "A" is an enviromental disgrace, and just like the "W" in Silver City should be restored to the mountains' condition at the time of these desecrations. Sustainability and environmental stewardship should take priority at both universities/towns. Some traditions are not worth maintaining, most of which are generated in fraternities or sororities. Grow up already and seek to attain a higher level of civic and enviromental responsibility.

Freshmen, when cornered by an upperclassman, were required to put their beanie on an upraised thumb aimed at the 'A' and sing the Aggie Fight Song.

Has anyone been up there lately to see the thousands of nails strewn about on the ground left there after the burning of all of the pallets during the December pilgrimage? I agree with and respect the tradition of the pilgrimage but it appears to have gotten out of hand. A massive fire built in an area which was unprotected, burning native plants. Trash left all over the ground. A true disgraceful drunken bash. Needs to be curbed and kept under control next year.

I started at NMSU in the fall of '57.. the "beanies" were maroon with a white "A" in the front.. and yes, we had to put it on our thumb and sing the Aggie Fight Song, while facing A Mountain!! The underclassmen would come thru the dorms before dawn and roust everyone out--no excuses!! Does anyone remember seeing freshman bending over while an upperclassman "spanked" them?? I can remember seeing many a frosh sitting in warm water the night of the march.. soaking! Great memories!! Need to organize the entire student body to keep this tradition alive!!

Agreed.....good story.

I learned something new and it's appreciated.

Next story suggestion....Mining in the Organs.
There has to be tons of stories to match each cave shaft in the Earth up and around there. In the big mountains and the smaller mountains.

Successes, busts, exploration danger stories, abandoned equipment and buildings, and deaths from. EPA concerns and current conditions.

Yup.

A lot to keep an interested reporter busy for a while.

I knew atleast one granola bar would comment on the painting of the letter "A". Move back to San Francisco...you've already ruined THAT state.
