I remember when Stockberger couldn't write enough about McCord and all the renovations. And how she was going to run the restaurant and be a lounge singer there on the weekends. And she apparently took a great establishment and ran it into the ground!
Torch may the answer - she ought to torch the place and get the insurance money!!!

Your solution is torch the place? Obviously you have never owned a business, house, car, or for sure a business. Maybe she took a business that wasn't doing too great and followed her dreams to own her business?? At least she tried and did something beside sitting at a computer and critisizing everyone who does try and doesn't succeed. Pretty sure you had a laid back govenment job at a desk and just sat back and waited for your retirement to kick in. Sorry but there are actually people in the world who get off their a** and follow their dreams and not just a check from the government.

Prices were ridiculous! When I first heard it was going to re-open I thought that was good....then I heard off the prices! I never even bothered!

ELE2, the prices were reasonable for the quality of the food and service. Unfortunately Las Cruces will be stuck with one and two star restaurants until people stop listening to rumors and actually try a restaurant and make up their own minds. I will miss Torch but hold out hope that Las Cruces will some day soon have a fine dinning restaurant that lives up to the term.

You know, peole in LC continually gripe that we don't have enough restaurants, and survey after survey says this is what reidents want most. But how many restaurants have come and go within the past 6 years. In case you're not keeping track, a lot! Folks wonder why Olive Garden or Trader Joe's aren't coming to LC. Would you if you owned those companies? Not with our track record. This isn't just about the economy; it reflects a mindset here that isn't likely to change anytime soon.

Torch will be missed! Although the prices were at the high end, so was the quality, attention to detail, ambiance, and the total experience. You get what you pay for. Thats a hallmark of dining that was un-matched in this little town. My best to the owner and Chef! Mike...

How sad. My wife and I got engaged at Meson and we had our wedding reception there. For years we went to Meson on "Blue Moons" as it was a blue moon on the day we got engaged.
But the restaurant went through several owners, service went down hill, and the last time we had dinner there, we sadly decided never to return as the recent experiences were only clouding our wonderful memories.
We never patronized the latest management.
It is very hard to turn around a restaurant after a period of long decline.

Well, yeah. After all, us hicks don't have anything better to do with our cash than spend it on a fine "dinning" meal. To heck with feedin' the kids, let's go blow our grocery budget on one meal!
Talk about arrogant. Wow. You folks take the freakin' cake.
I'd LOVE to be able to afford an expensive night out, but with the pay rates around Southern New Mexico, I can barely afford Spaghetti-Os and hot dogs most of the time.
Instead of whining about what a bunch of hicks we all are, perhaps you could look at WHY no one will pay a fortune for a fancy meal?
This place is just another victim of the low pay versus high cost of living of its customer base.
Until I get to a place in life where I don't have to choose between buying the cheap laundry soap and the brand name stuff, I'll be spending what few dollars I have for going out on the town on the value menu. At least that way everyone gets to eat.

Lived in LC recently but moved away as soon as we had a good feel for the area. The locals are the saddest but most smug group of people I have ever encountered. Wonderful home in Sonoma, but having lived in all parts of the US, we quickly determined LC to be the most unenlightened and dullest place to possibly be stuck in. If anyone wants imput on whether LC is a good place to live or retire in, I would suggest only if the person were comatose.

Las Cruces is a great place to live and the people are friendly. Those who move here with a chip on their shoulder and a "bow to me" attitude because I'm from out of town, soon end up the bitter minority. If you move here, make the effort to blend into the community and the culture or you will end up watching from the sidelines with a bad attitude. If you decide to stick it out as a loner, you will find yourself setting up camps in towns all over America, with the same losing attitude. What are you afraid of? Live a little, try those tortilla chips and salsa, they are really good man!

People down here do for themselves and don't think we're better than others and expect others to do for us.....especially if you come from out of town and think you should instill your "two cents." Has nothing to do with ethnicity, financial status, etc. We're just simple, self reliant people down here SW NM

Simple-yes, self reliant-NO! Never have I seen a population more content to suck on the teet of welfare programs. Just go to the one chain grocery store Albertsons, not counting the Walmart(how many now? 3, 4 and still counting) and see the number of people using WIC coupons and food stamps.
At any rate, I liked alot of things about NM but unfortunately erred in selecting the Las Cruces area. Despite my enjoying chilis on occasion, I prefer shrimp and fresh seafood on a more frquent basis.

It is really sad that Torch and Merci's has shut down, along with TJ Pauls'. I love this town, and everything it has to offer, and I believe that there are a few people in this town who are willing to spend money on a nice dining experience. The saddest part is, there aren't enough people to be able to support them. My best wishes to Cali from Meson and Larry from TJ Pauls'. One door closes, another door opens!!

I'm sad that the restaurant closed. I remember sadly that the prices were too high for a college student to afford unless you were using your loans for other purposes. However, I worked at a hotel and would recommend the restaurant to our savvy and more influential customers and didn't have any of them complain. That was of course in 2000s and I don't remember when she took over. But it's true about all of the restaurants closing. It's always been sad to see some of the good ones go. BUT! There's always Lorenzo's!!! HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!

It's a shame it closed. I had a few GREAT meals there, and looked forward to returning. The prices were higher than others in LC, but the quality was equal to the price and, thus, was fair. It was a special occasion place for sure. My guess is that the owner, while well intentioned, didn't have the hospitality expertise (or the big wallet) to carry it off. Opening a year late was a pretty bad sign...had to cost a fortune. I wish her well, though..a nice person and great singer. I'm not sure LC can or will support a restaurant that doesn't serve enchiladas and chips n salsa, except for a couple chain places that people somehow mistake for a fine dining experience. The notion that new arrivals have a "chip on their shoulder" is always amusing to me. In fact, the chip is on the shoulder of people like Juan C. R. Guey (sure it isn't Buey??) who seem to think only they can put in their two cents...and resents anyone who isn't satisfied with or questions the status quo. The "we don't think we're better than others" bull he's spewing is nonsense...he clearly thinks a long term resident is "better than" a newer arrival. I see such defensive attitudes rooted in fear of the new, of change, and a sign of deep self doubt. Kind of sad, really. Witness the excuse-making by Feh...as if poor ol' Feh can't get off his behind and make more money. Is is someone elses fault you've either settled for a poorly paid job or not prepared yourself for a better one? So much easier to blame "them" for not paying you more than to look in a mirror and admit it's YOUR choice and YOUR problem. Old boss not paying you enough? Go find a new one who will, or, better yet, start your own business and MAKE your fortune. Then YOU can make sure all your employees are very well paid. I won't hold my breath waiting for that to happen ;)

For that sadly short time it was at a high point, at least as good as the very early days of Meson de Mesilla. You would have been pleasantly surprised. You're right though..the place had taken such a slide that it was going to be hard to turn it around. It probably failed for the reason most new restaurants do: not enough money to keep going until business builds up to profitable levels. I know this from many years owning restaurants, it's one of the toughest businesses and has a very high failure rate.
