"Union Pacific executives say the company will invest $418 million in the Santa Teresa project, employ about 3,000 people during construction and create 600 full-time jobs."
Corporate pay-to-play business as usual. How have we gotten to such a system of corporate welfare? The company publicly states the above, which essentially boils down to, "We'll conduct business as planned and expected." And for such gracious activities, we're supposed to ante-up and pay them for it through tax breaks (and the implied message, we should also be grateful for it).
Odd... aren't we the nation of go-get-ums, or folks who are built by pulling our own boot-straps? I guess no longer, for our corporate friends... as their philosophy is now, "Why do it ourselves when we can get John Q Public to pay for it?"
We're cutting back on the small-bucks welfare program that benefit the folks who need it (the poor, indigent, unemployed, unschooled, underfed, etc...), and yet we continue to pour big bucks welfare sums into our corporate welfare programs. Is that "penny wise and dollar stupid", or what?
Apologies in advance for my rant...
