"This has turned into an anti-business city. No flags, no weeds, no signs, no business, no gross receipt tax. Who would want to come bring their business here with all the rules and regulations?"

And just four short years ago under Mayor Mattice Las Cruces was a family-friendly place to live, a tourism friendly place to visit, and a business friendly city to make a living.

Caller:
"So they decided to do away with the wolf program and the people that pretty much made that decision are the farmers and the ranchers. A creature has a right to exist"

Provided they aren't tasty or profitable, right you watermelon (green on the outside red and seedy on the inside)?

Wanna save wolves? Buy some land, release some wolves, contain them, keep the ranchers out. Go ahead. No one will complain.

Caller:
"Kudos to the Las Cruces International Mariachi conference for being nominated to receive the governors award for 2011."

More power to you if you like Mariachi. Restauranteers, I assume it is profitable to bring them in or you wouldn't do it - to me the fastest way to ruin a relleno is with a trumpet blaring in my ear.

The single most dangerous thing in this town is pointing out to a Mariachi fan that it is Polka, played faster. Go look at the sheet music. Oooom-pa Oooom-pa Oooom-pa.

Caller:
"You folks who have moved here from the eastern part of the country want a White Castle here. I guess you have never had or heard of In and Out Burger, which is absolutely the best hamburger on the planet. That is what we need here."

Both are decent for what they are.

There's half a dozen far superior burgers at local places though.

Take a minute, go to Dicks, High Desert, even Blakes before asking for the chain store stuff. Oh man - Sparky's in Hatch ... damn that's a tasty burger.

On that note - how in the bloody 'ell does Taco Bell stay open in this town. What is wrong with people?

Caller:
"Hey Las Cruces, how about a Schlotzsky's? I love Schlotzsky's."

(Hope this stays as a food day rather than a polotics day)

DG's, Metropolitan ....

Schlotzsky's? Really? Mmmm mmmm mmmm ... Corporate.

Caller:
"When you see kids in school throw half of their food in the trash cans, you realize they have not seen hard enough times yet. Like us oldsters, when you did not waste anything."

Willing to bet most of that started out as trash from chains. How many different ways can you rearrange Grade F meat, HFCS, and soybean meal? It's hog food no matter how big your advertising budget - throw the whole thing away, you'll live longer

I can't recall seeing any bit of a Lorenzo's Mesilla Valley Special Pizza or a loaf of Zeffiro's bread in the trash.

Caller:
"People complained Obama is not leading on the tough issue. Who got bin Laden? Who saved Chrysler and General Motors? Who brought us out of the deepest recession in 60 years he inherited from Bush and the Republicans?"

Knew it couldn't last.

1) Some well trained SEALs got Bin Laden in the only 40 seconds of these wars that ever should have taken place.

2) A bunch of sucker consumers with no care for vehicle preformance or longevity and or a bizzare hatred for German and Japanese engineers / non-union American/Mexican workers saved the car companies - along with some union thugs.

3) We're out of the recession, huh? Wanna sell me some gold or oil or wheat at today's price +10% for delivery in a year? C'mon, easy money.

"who would want to bring their business here?" The answer, of course, is someone who thought they could make money. Are weeds really that good for business? Has this person looked at the real world? Some of the most prosperous places are some of the most regulated,(and the least regulated, some of the poorest)

Oh yeah....what savvy, successful businessman doesn't know that a yard full of weeds is a sure sign of success???
Clutter up the neighborhood with a bunch of flags, banners and bozos waving Going Out Of Business signs and you've got a business friendly paradise. The money will be falling from the skies....lol

The seals got bin hidin, Obummer and holder got ATF agents. Chrysler and GM will fail again because they are now run by the union thugs that Odumbo gave them to. We are still in a Recession..who took us into the biggest debt this country has ever been in, spent a trillion on stimulus that gave us 9.2% unemployment and still has no idea how to create jobs.

I think you've got your Mexican music confused, Orv.
Mariachi isn't Oom-pa music though there are horns involved. Doesn't mean a Mariachi band can't play Nortena, but that's not Mariachi music. Mariachi almost always has violins, Oom-pa none.

The toot-n-squeak Oom-pa is Nortena, sometimes called Banda, especially the Duranguense or Sinaloense stuff that sounds like a German circus band gone crazy on Mary-hoo-hoo. It's probably the only Mexican music I don't love....

Maybe you should attend the Mariachi conference and get to know it. You might get a "reaction" from a Mariachi fan, but it's because you don't know the music ;)

White Castle will most likely never expand very far west of the Mississippi. In fact the closest location is in Missouri. I don't know why the franchise is set up that way, it would be really great to have one close by. I thought I heard we were getting a 5 Guys Burger and Fries, which I haven't been to but have heard from friends that it is wonderful. I too love Schlotzsky's and can't wait until they open here. I go there every time I am in Ruidoso or Roswell. Despite Orville's objection to that establishment, it does serve food that is unique, I don't care if it is corporate.

He is Comander in Chief, they are his Seals.

Look at the numbers, GM and Crysler are better run now than 2008.

Ressession is a word with a meaning ( as in receed ) We are growing, look it up.

The deficit was greater in 1949, look it up.

A stimulus that transformed the "Second Great Depression" ( to quote Sen. McCain) into an 18 month recession.

So far, twice as many jobs have been created than in the 8 years of the previous administration.

You might be a happier person if you embraced the real world.

"a clean, well-kept city"

Let's examine this statement for a moment.

1. Forced Recycling with questionable motives:
http://www.recyclenewmexico.com/pdf/2009_Acco...

2. Our replacement for Laab's Olympic size swimming pool is now a multimillion dollar wading pool for kids.

3. Our downtown is a total mess for a one lane road no one will use.

4. We have two vacant buildings hoping for million dollar rebuilds from donations, the Amador Hotel, and the former Dona Ana County Court House, but not more than 250' away from both the city is planning on putting a low income housing project.

5. We have a multimillion dollar Convention Center which was built next to the University so attendees miss Las Cruces when they visit, and it's too small and cannot be expanded without building a completely new multimillion dollar building.

6. We have new traffic cameras on all of the major intersections that exit from the Interstate into Las Cruces, a sure tourism builder there, heh?

7. We have a new water company we took over on the East Mesa.

8. We can't have too dark of a tint on our cars in the desert southwest where the UV rays and heat is so intense.

9. No one except Police can use cell phones when they drive.

10. Soon we will have a new mobile home park at Burn Lake.

Can we all imagine what new advantages another 4 years of our present leadership will bring to Las Cruces in our new "a clean, well-kept city"?

I think Bill had it right, leave the people alone, leave businesses alone, make Las Cruces a friendly place, advertise the fact Las Cruces is a friendly place in all the trade and vacation magazines, allow the press to find Las Cruces through magazines and let them vote Las Cruces into popularity.

If Las Cruces advertises now, we will be centerpieces in "Nazi Today", or perhaps "Gestapo News", or maybe, "Business Tweak".

I do hope that all who complain vote. So many times I hear, "no, I don't vote. It doesn't count anyway". It sure doesn't count if you don't vote. I don't understand why other states allow Independent voters to vote in the primaries and New Mexico won't. Only Democrats and Republicans can vote in the primaries. That is an issue I wish one of our Senators' would get behind.

Additionally, recession is an economic term with specific criteria: re·ces·sion/riˈseSH ən/Noun
1. A period of temporary economic decline during which trade and industrial activity are reduced, generally identified by a fall in GDP in two successive quarters.

GDP has been positive for 7 consecutive quarters and the quarter ending June 30th witll be the 8th..
