School supplies needed for low-income families

Full story: Las Cruces Sun-News

Sharpening stubby colored pencils for one more school year? It's a strategy some parents use to get the most for their back-to-school bucks.

School supplies will put a damper on the parents getting their beer ,smoking , finger nails done, did I mention hair. I would not give a dime. If the parents can.t support their children, why should I. Can't their grand parents, uncles, aunts (family) help Or is the whole family poor.

You've never had a financial crisis? Each day that dawns has the potential to bring disaster to a family. From the loss of a job, to a major illness that drains the bank account. Sure some of the people that will use this assistance should probably think about birth control, some of them surely could have used a little wisdom before having children at all, some of them should be reaching out to their families, all of which were fine points... That doesn't mean that there aren't people out there that don't deserve some help.

If you ever hope to have at least one child break the cycle doesn't it make sense to assist them with their education? It isn't as if they can unmake their children by taking birth control, you do understand it is a little late for that. But it isn't too late to educate these kids. I sometimes wonder what happened to people that made them so intensely negative, helping others is a good thing. May you never need the assistance, and if you do, may you be surrounded by kind and giving people.

Yes well I wonder how this would have worked during the Great Depression....Roosevelts new deal was the beginning of our welfare program. Thankfully we have a history of pulling up our bootstraps one taxpayer at a time.

Very true. During the Great Depression, not even family or friends had much to offer, in this Great Recession, there are people who go on spending and living their lives without financial difficulty, in fact, some even say they're doing better than ever. Just ask Jean Valjean, he (or she?) seems to have enough for all.
19) There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:
(20) And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,
(21) And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.
(22) And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
(23) And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
(24) And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
(25) But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

My spouse and myself both work and support our three children. We budget and pay for all of our living expenses as best we can. When I am buying groceries and getting cheap brands and chicken for our meals and see these welfare receipiants getting name brand items and steak, that really hurts. So now maybe the shoe is on the other side.
Maybe they can learn to budget also.

I agree and let me tell you each family living off welfare receives an extra $200.00 (for each child) in the month of August to buy school supplies for their children. So we tax payers are already providing for these families.

When I was a single parent I was out working to support the kids I had braught into this world. I bought what they needed, I didn't go begging. Sure a lot of their clothes came from yard sales, but I bought them honestly. Over all these years since the last great recession in the late 70's I have heard the same 2 things. 1) "I cant find a job", and 2)"You can't find good help any more". If we quit handing them everything, maybe they will get off their butts and come pull the weeds in my yard. Then I'll buy their kids school supplies. Those who are really having a hard time are the ones you don't notice, because they don't ask, they just work harder. God Bless Them. Those others, if they are too good to work, My money isnt good enough for them.

I agree, it also hurts when you see same people driving around in Cadillac Escalades, on Harley Davidsons, etc.

I still try to give though because I feel it is the righteous thing to do. If $cumbags who receive what I give and they really didn't need it, well then they will have to answer for that at some point and it is not for me to decide.

As Bob Dylan once said ďDonít criticize what you canít understand.Ē

To any one who is in need and happened to fall upon such vial ignorance as is posted on this blog take courage, not every one gets it. Please be patient and understanding. Be the example by living life in a way that builds the self image and value that every human being deserves.
Even the people who donít get it, and may never get it deserve that.

I am really shocked to read some of the past comments. Yes I am on welfare. It is not my children's fault so why should they suffer? I use my food stamps with coupons to buy meals for my family. I get $75 a month to help pay for non food items, like toilet paper. I work and go to school full time.

Amazing here we go again - the poverty pimps, free loaders and moochers of society line up at the
trough one more for freebies.

How many of these are convicted felons, drug users, gangbangers, ILLEGALS, and just the no
loads of society that don't want to work, have done nothing to set themselves up for success much
less their families and of course would rather lay
around drinking, smoking and making babies.

Another handout amongst more than enough handouts -
hard to make the distinction between the freeloaders and those that really need assistance.

Seems like those on assistance (many who work under
the table by the way) have enough systems available to them to make pretty decent living.

Have seen my share of EBT card users riding around in newer vehicles, seem to have enough to buy name brand at stores rather than generic etc.

Check in with Maobama HQ sure they can come up with something for you - just your kind of people - moocher, freloaders and those that frankly don't take care of their kids.

If you are so concerned of how other people can afford their things, why don't you stop them and ask them instead of hiding behind your computer.
