Good on Vince and Mary. That location was an albatross because of the economy taking a dump. These are good folks who have been amazing supporters of the community and especially the NMSU athletics program for a long time. There isn't a corporate restaurant in town that has given as much to the community as Vince and Mary over the years. I wish them the best and will continue to be a customer. Mmmmmm.

Its always sad when a business like that closes. I imagine the Olive Gardens sucess had alot to do with that location closing. I really liked that place, now the pan am location is gonna be a further drive, but we will still make it there. Best of luck to this family!

Nothing against Lorenzo's, but you have forgotten about Burger Time. For decades Burger Time was THE primary sponsor and supplied many large donations to the high schools and to NMSU. NMSU forgot who their friends were and drove them off campus. Regardless of what side you are on in that fight, anyone who has been in Las Cruces since Burger Time started remembers their huge charitable donations to all the schools in Las Cruces.

Yes. Kevin and his late wife were always there when NMSU needed them and it's a dang shame what happened. Seems it's always the smaller operators who give the most and get kicked in the teeth.

Sounds like a wise decision. Family and friends have to come over work. Self employment can take over your life quickly! And they are still wonderful place to go! All of them! In Cruces and Old Mesilla. Can't compare Olive Garden at all to the "real thing" that Lorenzo's is. They will always be tops!

Too bad the Lohman one is closing and not the University location instead. The Lohman location had much nicer ambiance. The location on University has the ambiance of a Denny's. I'm disappointed in the choice.

Burger Time raised $200K last year, how much did they pay out??!! Burger Time does NOT provide the amount of money that people think they do. Burger Time does NOT provide money to ALL sports like they claim to either. Someone should publish their donations. Do you ever even see any customers at a Burger Time? I didn't think so...

Is Lorenzos the place where they mix green chile with lasagna and other pasta?

I think so, correct me if I am wrong.

If so, it's no wonder they are still in business.

I really would like to see an authentic Italian restaurant in this town. There isn't one yet, but when one does open, watch out.

What is authentic Italian? You can write "authentic" all you want, but the truth is, outside of Italy, there isn't authentic Italian because 1) restaurants modify recipes to use ingredients that are available locally, 2) restaurants cater to their clientele's tastes, which differ from state to state, city to city, and 3)change their recipes over time. Even across Italy, cuisine varies depending on region. No different here.

All ethnic groups - Mexicans, Italians, Irish, Greek, Jews etc. etc. etc.- claim NO ONE can cook their food right and NO ONE has such big, crazy weddings as they do and if you marry into them you'll see what it's like. If one more person tells me 'You have to see the movie Fools Rush In with Matthew Perry and Salma Hayek because IT'S EXACTLY like what is like to marry into a Mexican family, I'm going to puke on their shoes.

Oh, it's so rare to have big family gatherings with food and music and crazyness and love (sarcasm). I'm from a German family, and that is EXACTLY what marrying into a German family is like. Just, instead of tamales, there's bratwurst and kraut. I also grew up with Polish families, and, let me tell you, Polish wedding aer all about food and dancing and beer and fun and family. Have you ever seen the movie 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding?" Same thing.

So for all of you ethnic elitists, get over yourselves. Enjoy your heritage, but quit trying to tell us how vastly different and better and funnier it is than other heritages because, it's really not. If you don't like to eat somewhere because it's 'not authentic' then don't eat there. We don't need to hear how you are really (insert ethnicity here) and your grandma cooked etc. etc. and NO restaurant can ever get it right.

We're all from big, sloppy, loving, fighting, cooking families and ethnicities whether it's Scottish or Hawaiian or Armenian or Russian or whatever. People love being part of a group and bragging about it - thus clubs and gangs etc.- but we're all there in our own way.

Sad that they're closing Lohman location. It was my favorite one AND, if I'm in the mood for Italian food, I'll choose Lorenzo's over our Olive Garden any time. No comparison, in my opinion.

While the comment about Olive Garden was probably out of place, did the name calling help?

Not the best Italian in town. But good enough for second place. I agree with the person that said they should have closed the University location instead of the Lohman. The one on University always seems dirty. Sort of like Casa Luna use to.

I'll happily agree with you. I'm a fan of SI, and also Lorenzo's in Mesilla. I'm not a fan of Olive Garbage, though the crammed full parking lot there tells me a lot of Las Crucens are. I've never been to the OG in Las Cruces though I've been to stores in other places, and I'm sure it's exactly the same. That's the whole point of huge corporate chains.
OG will hurt a lot of locally owned Italian places...it does so in every city one is built. The alternatives for owners are: go out of business (like the Lorenzo's) or get much sharper with business management, operations and innovation in the front of the house and upgrade and perfect every possible thing coming out of the kitchen, the back of the house.
The "this was always good enough" attitude is a recipe for locked doors & bankruptcy when a big nationally advertised chain comes to town.
