Ah, Custom Bakers, I am 61 years old and all through my life I judge every slice of cheesecake I eat against Custom Bakers. Not one ever compared, oh my aching heart.
I agree Brian! I first had CB cheesecake (it was baked in a shell like pastry) in Long Beach when we were there for the summers 1965-68. We'd arrive to our bungalow and the men would drive to CB and pick up a cheesecake, choc cake and apple pie. THE BEST! I have never had a piece of cheesecake that could compare to Custom Bakers. And now I live in Centre County, PA where there is NOTHING good and you can't find anything here, except scrapple! ugh...

Hi, so nice to see that people still remember my family's bakery. However, the 'kids' did not take over the business. My grandfather felt that it was time to move on.....I still miss it everyday......

everything was so delicious, miss it all the time but especially around the holidays. Idea, if you could publish the recipes and how the business got started.... I am sure people would be interested in buying a copy, especially from a family member. If you don't do it, someone else would and state that they are a historian (LOL)

I too really miss the Custom Bakery yellow cake with chocolate frosting. It was the best and so good. We used to seek out all the retail locations where the cake was sold..and then on special occasions, we would go to the bakery location with our grandparents and buy a whole cake. I even recall at my grandfather's 90th birthday party, we celebrated with an extra large Custom Bakery yellow cake with chocolate frosting.

HI, actually we never had the chance to run the bakery. We were all in college doing our own thing at that time. My grandfather sold it when he and my grandmother could no longer physically run it. There was never any troubles with the bakery. Also, with regards to the recipes, those will be staying within the family as they should. Thank you so much for your sweet story. We all miss the bakery. I grew up in it and it was the backbone of our entire family. The sentimental value it held is unmeasurable and with that, my parents and grandparents are sorely missed as is that big red eyesore of a building.

I really miss Custom Bakers yellow cake with chocolate frosting. I have never tasted another cake like that. I would get Custom Bakers cakes for ALL of my birthdays (beating out Carvel cakes) and when we would come home from Atlantic Beach in the summer time ,we would always stop off at Customer Bakers. Does anybody, anywhere know where I can get a recipe copy of Custom Bakers yellow cake with chocolate frosting? They had something special also on the sides, like crumbs or something.
Please send it to [email protected] I don't know what I can give you in return, except a big thank you and maybe a garden gnome. Yes, I'll trade a little garden gnome for the Custom Bakers Recipe for yellow cake with chocolate frosting. I do know that the kids of the owners took over and then had trouble so they closed it. God, I missed that hulking red albatross of a building on Long Beach RD. What's there now, Dunkin Donuts, right? I am in Florida, so I don't get back to old NY much.
Thanks

I don't recall us ever making lemon merengue, perhaps maybe around the holidays though I don't recall it ever being made in the bakery. Thank you and yes I miss all the cakes. I especially miss my grandmother and I sampling the breads and pumpkin pies when they would come out of the oven and my grandfather yelling at us to stop...loll Great times...

My aunt has all the recipes and it has been decided that the recipes will not be shared to the public but will stay within the family. I know the story of how the business got started but I prefer to keep that within the family as well. Some things should be and are meant to be and remain private. Thank you for your interest though. And hey if anyone thinks they know the story, they're more then welcomed to mention it. I just prefer not to.
