I'm sooo sure she needs the money! Retired and 52 on Long Island - the minority big time!

I have an amusing lottery story. I don't kow if it is true and have no way to prove it one way or the other.

At a place I was working at a few years ago, I started a lottery pool, and 3 or 4 other guys would go in twice a week for $1 each. This went on for more than a year.

One of the guys I was friendly with there was named Joe and he was about 10 years younger than me (late 20's). I would ask him once in awhile if he wanted to join the lottery pool, but he always said no. After about a year, I asked him why he wouldn't join the lottery pool with the rest of us and he told me the following story:

More than 10 years earlier, when Joe was 18 years old, his mother would faithfully play the lottery each week and always play the same numbers.

One day, she was sick in bed with the flu and she asked her son, young Joseph, to go to thestore and buy her her lottery tickets. Being a good son, young Joseph said "Of course !"

But being a teenager, young Joseph did not do so.

Well, you know what happened. According to Joe, his mother's lottery numbers finally came in. And he had not purchased the ticket, despite promising her he would do so.

Is the story true ? I don't know. But that is what my friend, Joe, told me happened.

oooo yes, very amusing.
Here's another amusing story:
Several years ago my 73 yr old uncle hit the Lotto big. He was so excited his heart gave out and he died.
After the will was read, and my cousin was given the ticket he discovered his father was mistaken.....it was NOT a winning ticket. It was actually worthless.
Isnt that amusing?

Because "the state" has persecuted gamblers for decades, arresting numbers runners etc, it is super hypercritical of them to then get into the game and do it themself.

However, having discovered a tax on the mathmatically challenged is a cash cow, they are not apt to stop it. This money was supposed to go to "education" but property taxes on LI continue to rise.

One thing you will likely never see is an indepth longitudinal study of what effect having large sums of money has had on some of the super-losers who line up each time the jackpot gets large (and therefore the odds longer)
