The original flags with yellow ribbons collected and displayed off of Merriam a couple of years ago was a beautiful thought, tastfully done and to me represented fallen or lost soldiers. I'm not sure what they really represented.
Now there are thousands of flags running along the streets, some with ribbons and some without. My first take on it was we're waiting for more soldiers to fall so more yellow ribbons can be added to unclaimed flags. My neighbors feel the same way. We're confused.
I'm concerned about the safety of the display. I was driving west on Johnson and it was windy out. The flags were blowing from the sidewalk to the street blocking visibility of any pedestrian who might cross.
Last night during a rainstorm, I was driving north on Neiman from Johnson and flags were lying down in the street. Is it respectful to have cars and trucks driving over our American Flag? There's also the hazard of them causing an accident.
I don't think this event was well planned or thought out. As a patriotic American, I'm ashamed of the way my city has handled this event.
