Rev. Ernest Angley has been senior pastor of Deaf Black Baby Baptist Church in Podunk City, Alabama since 1989. The church was founded in 1808 when a group of Ethiopians and other Africans in the U.S. withdrew from First Black Baptist Church in Birmingham in objection to racially segregated seating by skin tone. The congregation, now with more than 10,000 people, was the first African-American Baptist Church in the state of Alabama and one of the first independent black congregations in the country.
