The real issues are that people don't want to live next to unsocialized people who engage in wild and criminal behavior so they don't allow them to. That's a GOOD thing.

While we all agree that crime is of issue, the two areas that must be addressed are more jobs that pay a living wage not a poverty wage and passage of the medicaid expansion, without these two Meridian nor Mississippi will ever move from the bottom of the states.

I find Meridian a most charming town. My husband and I recently bought a charming home there to use as a vacation house and to be near close friends who are both recently retired Navy (he a pilot she a nurse) who came back there to retire after being gone 16 full years from the area. Meridian is a wonderful shopping venue attracting shoppers from many surrounding counties. People who live halfway between Meridian and Tuscaloosa or Meridian and Selma or Meridian or Meridian and Hattiesburg or Meridian and Jackson quite often now choose to shop in Meridian for their big city needs over the lavish new Mall and wonderful restaurants at every turn. Pilots frequently come back there to retire who did their FIRST Commission in the city 16 years before as they remember it as a positive and pleasant town. Often Navy Pilots will keep a home they have bought there when they are transferred knowing they can rent it out and have it waiting when they come back to Meridian to retire. Meridian now has EVERY conceivable chain restaurant including Chili's and Applebee's and so on. The restored downtown is fabulous! The Meridian Campus of Mississippi State University has grown yearly and now offers many fields of study on both an Undergraduate and Graduate level. The lavish new Bonita Lakes Mall is owned by the owners of only the most upscale shopping venues, they also own the Mall of Beverly Hills in Beverly Hills California and other upscale shopping venues about our nation and Canada. The actress Sela Ward has opened the new Orphanage and maintains close ties to the community and maintains a home in Meridian. Anderson Cooper maintains ties to the area and close ties with his family in the area, his father the late Wyatt Cooper being a native son. The healthcare is ranked among the best in the nation! When you consider that Meridian has depopulated in the last decades you have to remember that the size of the American family is smaller now than then and many people wait longer to have children now and have less of them so this demographic is seen in many places over these facts.
