What a black eye Sheppard has given small town law enforcement. While I don't savor the thought of a man losing his job, Sheppard needs to do the right thing by resigning, getting some alcohol abuse treatment, and then find employment in a less stressful field. My advice to him is this, "he won't find the answers to his problems at the bottom of a bottle of beer"

Move on to another officer. Make a part timer like Dewitt full time.

It was only a matter of time. But I'm sure Sheppard will only get a slap on the wrist. Good ole Thomas will see to that.

Wasnt this first reported a VFW incident. Why were the town police called out of town to Sportsmans....lots of questions??? What if it would have been someone not on police force????
Makes suspicious thoughts from readers and citizens

I cant see where this has the slightest thing to do with "small town law enforcement." He was off-duty, the incident was not related to his job.

Is it really that hard to figure out?

Maybe the incident began at the VFW, who called the local PD. By the time they got there, he left - went to the Sportsman and started busting stuff up...and since the Sportsman is not in the borough - you have to call the state police. Easy!

This is one of the smarter posts I've seen on this matter. Silly, but smart. BTW, if you see a little red line under a word, it's mis-spelled!

If the Police Deparment had a bar, then the officers woudn't have to drive anywhere. They could just get blind drunk and pass out in the jail cell. Like on Blazing Saddles when Gene Wilder got so drunk the Sherriff locked him up in a cell for the night. Man, that was a great movie. "candy gram for mongo, candy gram for mongo"

How can he uphold the laws when he already has a PFA on him. Sounds to me that he should be removed from his position. I also question why the boro PD was involved with this as the sportsmans club is obviously outside the boro line.

Evidently, this guy has some personal problems. If he can't keep them away from his job, he should be fired. He appartly has had enough warning.

You can bring up people like Patrick Kennedy (drinking or prescription drugs?) but don't forget Rush and, of course, our dear President Bush - former drunk & cokehead.

Some people have bad times & stuff happens. People typically need help more than condemnation.

maybe if the fire department wouldn't invite the cops to their annual banquet things may not have been this way. Apparently some people don't know Ofc. Dewitt either.

The VFW was not involved at all. Not one part of this incident took place in the boro. This whole thing would make a lot more sense if it DID happen in town, but it didn't. I'm sure the state police will want to know what the town cops were doing out in the state police area, and why the state police were cancelled by the town cops.

Ok, so he had a PFA order on him. So what? There is no evidence in this story as to why that order was signed. Could just be another wife acting scared during divorce proceedings and trying to get the sympathy of others
The man got drunk and got out of hand. He should lose his job and get some help.

Why wouldn't the FD invite the PD to a function? That was one of the more ridiculous statements! People (both FD and PD or anyone else for that matter!) should know when to drink, when not, and when they've had enough. NEVER, NEVER DRINK AND DRIVE...PERIOD!
