More history on the Black Boys and Fort Loudoun

Full story: Public Opinion

The seeds of the American revolution were planted on the colonial frontier around Mercersburg, McConnellsburg and Fort Loudon a decade before the Sons of Liberty complained about taxation without representation in the cities to the east.

Beat it to death Jim!!
Would these same American heros ask us to stand in te way of progress just to save a house? One that is in poor condition? Doubtful.

Right, just rip anything down that might attract visitors and preserve our history. Thank goodness a few people in the county are finally recognizing the gold mine that tourism represents and doing some things to help bring people in. This county is a historic treasure; let's keep what we have and improve on it.

Personally, we moved here to get AWAY from all of those people. And those "tourists" are NOT the goldmine you all seem to think they are.

Wait until you have to hire more police to handle the additional traffic and crime or "events" that those people will bring. You can't widen the streets to handle the traffic you want to attract, and you certainly don't have enough parking for the current residents, where are you going to put the tourists? You will have to hire more fire and emergency people, you will always be "on display", and anybody who lives remotely near to one of the "tourist attractions" will have to buy more homeowners insurance due to the possibility of somebody tripping over a crack in the sidewalk or the cobblestones, or being broken into. Why would you want all of that to complicate your life?

I hear there are some real nice farms out in the middle of Idaho where nothing changes and everything is the same.

Be truthful - you're not originally from here - you said so in another thread. So you came from the city, and now you want to bring the city with you. Most folks in these parts don't want the change you are trying to bring with you - the natives are resistant to change, and the "implants" came here because they like the lifestyle and don't want other "implants" turning it back into the city.

I'm not going anywhere, and I'll fight your change tooth and nail - YOU move if you want change.

George I'm truly sorry you are so bitter about everything. I can't imagine waking up every day and hating everything you don't like. I am a recent transplant to The Burg, and yes having lived major portions of my life in small town Iowa I find small town America great. When I was younger Iowa went through a real traumatic change when technology and the costs of farming made my family and many others get out of it. It was heart wrenching watching peple I knew selling their possessions to pay the bills. The lesson in life is that change is inevitable just like death and taxes. As for the Smith House from some of the negative comments I've heard I believe that even if we were talking about Monticello or Mount Vernon some people would be all for tearing them down too. It is a real shame that people see our past as something that would make a better parking lot than saving it for future generations so they might know where we came from.

Daily Horoscope for January 2

Scorpio

Something about your personality or appearance is drawing a lot of attention today, Scorpio. People insist on watching when you'd rather that they minded their own business. Your stubborn streak at a time when flexibility would be easier. Be kind to those with long memories, especially if you think you might run into them again at some point in your life. If you can't think of anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
