Off campus housing for U of W students? What kinds of codes are in place? How old was the building? When last was it inspected and system(s)s tested by the Fire Marshall? How many smoke detectors and were they operable? No requirement for retro-fit of sprinklers? Too many questions never raised in any of the news stories. I am sorry for the loss of these wonderful young students and the suffering of there families.

"retro fit of sprinklers"? This is not "College housing". This was a house close to campus that was owned privately, and rented to most likely students at the college. Per state law they do not have to put in sprinklers. they had working smoke detectors that woke people in a house next door. It's very very sad, but please--does the firemarshall come & check out your house? Please remember that this is private houseing that was rented by students. architect wrote: Off campus housing for U of W students? What kinds of codes are in place? How old was the building? why not let the facts appear before judging anybody? you weren't there, so you don't know. maybe they were too drunk, maybe not. who are you to judge someone else even if they were drunk? not all college students are raving alcoholics, in fact, many are not. wait for the facts. sandie wrote: "retro fit of sprinklers"? Who are yo to judge someone else? Wait til the facts are in. Maybe they were drunk, maybe not. You weren't there, so don't presume to know the situation. Not all college students are raving drunks, in fact many of us are not - by choice. And those "church" people who picketed should be ashamed of themselves. They are nothing but bigoted, judgemental, hate-filled assholes hiding behind the grossly misnamed word "church." Who says they know God's plan more than I do? Or anyone else who believes? Go back to Kansas.

Two years ago my daughter rented this house with three other female students. They lived in the front portion of the duplex, the portion where smoke inhalation took 3 students lives. This portion of the house was old and drafty on the first floor where my daughter slept she said the second floor was very hot when the heat was on. There were smoke alarms but I doubt there were sprinklers.Every time I look at the pictures of the house on the news it makes me very weepy and my heart goes out to each of their families.
