My ancestry is scandanvian. Should I be so offended by a football team being named the "vikings" that I get a law passed and establish a bureacracy to administer it?

I think the answer is simple. If the indians are offended, then the indians should pay ALL of the costs of to change the name. That includes new uniforms, letterhead, costs for design of a new logo and mascot, gym floors, football field turf, mascot uniforms, etc. Let's see how many step up and complain when they need to pay the costs associated with their 'complaint'.

This has NOTHING to do with someone being offended. This is a small minority group with an even smaller vocal group of rabble-rousers who like the power of being able to force change on other people.

I guess looking forward this will have to lead to changes in everything. I mean why stop at mascots? The village of Osceola should change its name as well. Heck, nearly every river, land mark and even the state name of Wisconsin come from Indian words. I guess eventually the only acceptable identification will have to come from GPS coordinates.
Friday night's HS football with feature 45.7 N 118.43W school VS 46.1N 116.9W to be played at the sport stadium located at 45N 118.7W. Go teams!

They are erasing themselves from history. Obviously they are ashamed of their past - they are defeated and demoralized. Any reminder of their past greatness is cause for sorrow and regret. They have been relegated to the vices they once condemned in order to survive. Pathetic

in that same vein, someone calling it "THE WHITE HOUSE" would then be considered a racist too! let's call it the Man's house! he be in charge! he the man! change the name of sugar too. brown sugar might offend latino's, white sugar would offend caucasions, or coffee! ordering black coffee would offend african ameriKans! and what about that SUV called the jeep "cherokee"! on and on and on and on......

It is about time WI caught up with all of the enlightened states that already have this legislation.

Common sense is not the strong suit for Wizz-consin-ites, is it?

You're almost spot-on, Sock.

Anyone ever stop to consider this "PC" movement is nothing about the "honor" of the Native Americans, but rather helping to expedite the process to forget their existence altogether? These last "reminders" are some of the few things that remain that pay homage to the indigenous peoples whose land was taken from them, their spirit, and life philosophies. It is indeed sad and ironic their last gasps for a piece of the American pie are centered on the same greed and vice that led them to their demise. One last "jab" between the eyes, if you will by those who took away their lives and livelihood.

Also, why is the TASK FORCE named the "Wisconsin INDIAN Education Association's Indian Mascot and Logo Task Force?"
Isn't that like a "black task force" calling themselves the "N" word? More hypocrisy. I went to the Task Force's web site to try to see who their financial contributors are, but their site conveniently does NOT list any such information. Only more sites to teach "tolerance." Tolerance is a word which means to "put up with." Their own words and actions are more racist and damaging than any schools which choose to champion Native American peoples are courageous, honorable, or anything else that ANY race would be proud to be associated with!
More wiping of the Native Americans from our history!

I say we ban anything that offends anyone, anywhere, any time, for any reason and isn't this crazy anyhow?

Oh wait, I can't use the word crazy....that may offend someone too.

never mind.

Another thing I learned: November is "Native Indian" month in America. I kid you not! There is actually guidance on how to officially observe this in the schools on the associated web sites. It's too offensive to have schools get behind a Native namesake or image, but white teachers teaching Native American history and culture is kosher???

Other sites affiliated with this have black, hmong, etc. affiliations. Nothing like all the minorities vying for a spot in the schools. Competition among "awareness" even. I am now CONVINCED this is a means to eradicate all memory of Native peoples from schools. A few "Tribal" persons seem to be the benefactors. Seems everyone will sell out their own kind if the price is right (NAACP for example.)

I went to Senior High in Wisconsin, the name of the high school was Tomahawk Senior High. The nickname, the Hatchets. The school is the the city of Tomahawk Wisconsin. What are they going to do make them change the name of the town? This is the most stupid thing I have ever heard.
