I stood at the bar at Novadell Golf Course near Ft Campbell last week waiting for the girl behind the counter to get me a Gatorade. While I was there, the idiot on CNN referred to last month being "horrific" in terms of American casualties in Afghanistan because 59 people died. If you ask me, horrific was when 2,500 died in one day on Iwo Jima or 3,000+ died at Pearl Harbor. In a day and age when everyone is using the term "hero" much too freely on those of us in the military, I as a military officer would like to say that Mr. Deans and many of his generation represent what a hero truly is. It takes more to be a hero than to just raise your right hand. All soldiers have their own personal motives for enlisting or seeking an officers commission. Maybe it's the guaranteed income when they couldn't find a job. Maybe it's a way to pay for college or put off growing up just yet. For a very small percentage, it might be solely because of patriotism. Not all of us possess the attributes of a hero. Using the term so loosely cheapens the title of the really great Americans who have earned it. Like Mr Deans.

The article said that Mr. Deans "worked for Universal Automatic Computer and Control Data Corp."

"Universal Automatic Computer" is more commonly known as UNIVAC, which had much of its origins here in the Twin Cities. Control Data was a spin-off of UNIVAC.

I agree that the hero label is thrown around much too casually. No longer is one required to risk anything at all. That a train driver who didn't run someone over is hailed as a hero is disgusting.

We need to support all military personnel. They, today, are protecting us from terrorism. We must fight for as long as it takes to protect our freedom. Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Iran, and or more countries are causing a lot of trouble. We must stand up against this threat. I'm thankful for veterans protecting me.
