I am trying to recall the many grocery stores in Memphis's past. I can remember PicPac, Hogue & Knott, A&P, Crondolet, Dixiemart, Giant Foods, Big Star and MegaMarket. Can anyone come up with any more and share any memories you might have of them?

There was a National Food Store on Poplar near Tillman and don't forget Giant Foods and Fred Montesi's. The location of the first PicPac was at 999 Jackson.

The Montesi's, located where the MIFA Center is now, I think at Vance & East St, used to have a wonderful carry-out Deli. Their hot turkey sandwiches bring back grand memories.

Also, there was Weona Markets (I think 3 or 4) and Sellars(sp) Grocers on Southern, near Mariana St.?

What was the name of the grocery store between Poplar and the RR tracks, across the street from maybe an IHOP and could be Sears? I think the street was Perkins or maybe Perkins Ext.
I'm talking Ca. 1987-'92 or so.
and, oh yes, Megamarket was GREAT!

Yeah, Sisco. Across from Oak Court. Loved that store, they had a marvellous selection of Bulk Tea, even had hard-to-find Lapsang Souchong.
Another of my favorites was across from the Eastgate Shopping Center. Maybe a Piggly Wiggly?
Including Megamarket, I could, and did, easily spend hours in those stores.
I love my retirement!

Gemco was one of the first membership type stores, limited to government, and certain other type employees, I think. They were out Lamar in the Clearpool area and were on the layout of a Walmart, but with better class products. I remember jewelry and food being sold in a warehouse style environment.

How about Bruno's BuyRite and Weingarten's Food Center, both in the grocery store building at White Station and Quince? And, yes, Hogue and Knott, at Park and Kimball, was it? Theirs was the first automatic (!) door I saw as a 2 year old. There was also Curb Market, a forerunner of 711s. John Gray's became a Big Star. Don't forget all of the little Italian American owned markets back in the day. Many to name. Lastly, I had A. Toussant laughing at the thought of Weona (we own a) grocery. Loved their signature screen door.
