We are planning a family trip to your city, but you all make it sound like we had better come heavily armed to stay safe. We wanted to visit Beale street, and of course Graceland, but there sure are alot of negative comments and it sounds so dangerous. It didn't used to be. What happened? Are there any parts of Memphis that are still safe for black or white?

Don't get discouraged Tourist. The anonymity of Topix brings out the worst in people. The nay-sayers on Topix are only a handful that like to stir up trouble/controversy - rarely do they offer an real or objective insight.

I have no problem taking my family to Graceland, downtown, Beale, Sun Studios, The Trolly, Spaghetti Warehouse, Midtown, South Main, The Pinch District, Overton Square, Cooper-Young, The Fairgrounds, wherever...

Like in any city, if you're a smart tourist, you'll be fine.

This will probably start another Memphis Suxx rant, but so be it. Bear in mind that several people here use different Topix names to add comments that appear to support other comments they made. It's really only a core group of retards that have some personal axe to grind with Memphis that make it sound so bad. And...most of don't even live here, so you'll not have to worry about running into them while you're here!!!! Sweeeeeet.

C'mon down.

I would add the Hotel Peabody, Beale street clubs, East Mfs Malls, South Mfs Malls, the Zoo, Fairgrounds, and even a visit to St Judes Childrens Hospital. We have a decent city to visit. There are multiple hotels, moderate to expensive, safe and close to where you would like to visit. On Line sources abound for research.
TOPIX Mfs has this question asked ALOT. and almost always there are negative rants from folks that do not know the city, never have been here and generally have negative rants about most everything.
Enjoy your time here, we are welcoming folks from all over.

Hey tourist

if you think Memphis is safe, you're flippin crazy

you never really know where anyone "lives" by there participation on ANY web-based forum ! don't fall for that nonsense either.

I know Memphis very very well, but I also know many many other cities well- large and small !

it's dangerous to assume that people don't have a great deal of mobility in 2009, but it's safe to say that most Memphians DON'T travel extensively and the vast majority of the residents have NEVER, and DON'T live in multiple places !(compare Atlanta, Charlotte, Miami, Tampa, Dallas, Houston, LA, NYC or a Chicago even), so their point of view is SEVERELY limited and in most time parochial to say the least ! Just read some of the trash on this site and many many others to get the true flavour. No one is lying on Memphis, just for the sake of LYING !

LOOK...the place IS dangerous by most measures sorry to report- the place IS full of racist morons (of every color)- the !!

Some of us exercise other choices to travel, return when we want or need to, etc, but it doesn't mean that we don't KNOW what we're talking about, or that we ,TOO are somehow ignorant to the realities ! No thinking person would assert that nonsense, but hey, it IS MEMPHIS and I have heard all kinds of crap and nonsense !

Do your outside research, get the facts ! they might surprise you

For me, I waste as little time possible on the city, and that's my 'educated opinion'.

If by 'waste as little time possible on the city' you mean you're in here every day blabbering on about how bad Memphis is, then your truly are 'wasting as little time as possible on the city'. Imagine what you could do if you put a little effort into your work.

As for getting a rounded opinion...consider this...I've lived in several major cities across the US. I live in Memphis now. I travel frequently both nationally and internationally for work/pleasure. If that doesn't qualify me, to answer an honest and considered question about Memphis from a potential tourist, then I don't know what does.

Come visit Memphis...I GUARANTEE you won't run into world-class morons like the jackass above, and you'll have a good to great time while you're here!!!

If, on the other hand, you enjoy rubbing elbows with the likes of Dave Sheker The Pretentious Dickhead, then consider a trip to Sorry-Sota, FL. You'll not be disappointed.

go to Nashville instead - way safer and better big TN city.
Memphis doesn't even have a water park or roller coaster, why would a family want to vacation there? Even Coors Light tour closed now - What is fun in Memphis for a family? someone answer this because I really dont know.

Yes tourist, according to most of the idiots on here memphis is one of the safest cities in america. You will really enjoy the safety of orange mound, bing hampton, lamar avenue, and elvis presley blvd. Make sure you check out southland mall in whitehaven.

I can't seem to find where anyone said Memphis is one of the safest cities in America. Perhaps I missed it.

Nevertheless, let me go ahead and state again that Memphis is dangerous...NO QUESTION. I agree with you!!!! Let me know if that doesn't register and I'll find another/simpler way to say it to you.

However, hundreds of thousands of people live here everyday and are not impacted by crime. In addition, as evidenced by our friend from the UK, countless tourists come here everyday and are not impacted by crime.

If you do a little research you will find that most crime occurs in areas like Orange Mound, Binghampton, Scutterfield, New Chicago, South Memphis, Frayser, etc. And unless you get lost or have a reason to be in these areas, locals and/or tourists rarely venture into them.

Conducting yourself in an alert and safe manor while in Memphis (as a local or a tourist) will keep the majority of people out of harms way.

Same goes for anyone living or visiting Detroit, Gary, San Francisco, New York, Sorry-Sota, Chicago, La Jolla, Ames, Columbus, Salt Lake City, Muncie, Las Vegas, and even in the bucolic village of Booneville, MS.

Prove me wrong...come visit Memphis and get shot.

"Prove me wrong...come visit Memphis and get shot." That should be the slogan for memphis chamber of commerce to recruit new tourists. LOL

Hey tourist, I was being sarcastic because I was trying to show how ridiculous people on here are for trying to play down how bad the crime truly is. If you would like to see how bad memphis is, take a look:

As I have stated, The place is dangerous and sucks

It's too funny that some posters enjoy blaming other posters and use a stupid tactic like 'name-calling', inflammatory language etc, just because somebody calls MEMPHIS WHAT IT TRULY IS !

Attempting to make feeble, stupid attacks on anohter poster, is just THAT.....STUPID....but yet revealing about the true nature of MAMMFISS TN

Moreover, personal attacks on other posters don't change the REALITY that the city sucks and IS DANGEROUS

Personal attacks on a WEDSITE obviously makes some people feel better ! but I think it's funny....and course of no real consequence in the REAL WORLD !

Heck, to be preoccupied with the activities of another poster on the world-wide-web is just
freekin STUPID ! but that's Memphis for you !

irritating ?? just feel free to IGNORE !

ha ha ha !

Over the past 30 years I have lived in Minneapolis, Des Moines, Columbus and Rochester. I have been in Memphis for the past 8 years. I work downtown and live in East Memphis. Other than having to pay huge sums of money (times 2) to put my kids in private school, my family and I love Memphis. We are season ticket holders to the Grizzlies and Redbirds. My kids are involved in church, skateboarding, sports, mountain biking and volunteer for a local community service. Other than running into a panhandler from time to time downtown we have not experienced any crime. We are aware of it but feel that the precautions we take have kept us crime free. It's been my experience that most Memphians have a similar story. We read about crime in the paper or hear about it on the news but for most of the people in the city crime doesn't affect us directly. That's been my experience and is my opinion only.

Statistically, the downtown area by Beale is the safest zip in the Memphis area. That doesn't mean it's safe, but I worked downtown for 6 years and somehow managed to survive.

Stay in touristy areas and you'll be fine.

If you want to tour some of the finer areas of orange mound, then maybe not.

I think this is a safe bet in any city.

People act like if you visit memphis you're guaranteed to be robbed and killed.

Yeah, Graceland does so well becuase 1/2 the people that visit get shot. And Beale is empty weekend nights becuase of the violence.

Get real people.
