TBI needs to update its manual on sex offender, update from the 1980's and stop scaring the public. A Google of "sex offender recidivism turned up the first three results:
http://www.csom.org/pubs/recidsexof.html
http://blogs.wsj.com/numbersguy/how-likely-ar...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex_offender

In each of these articles, it was mentioned that recidivism is much lower than the public believes, and a sex offender is not doomed to a life of uncontrollably recommitting crimes.

That said, the ones we may need to worry about the most are the ones who will not comply with law. Therefore, law enforcement paying more attention to the ones who will not register, who miss parole and check-ins with the registry shouldn't be ignored.

It is in the best interests of all to be educated about sex offenses. Here is a link to the Dept of Justice Center for Sex Offender Management. It takes you to the "Myths and Facts" page

I think they should randomly send out mail to these people and if they do not respond within a certain time frame, they need to do an investigation and locate them. Once they are located slap them with a $1000.00 fine and then make them register their correct location.
If they do not pay the fine, then arrest them and make them do community service or something else till the fine is worked off.

We need to stiffin the laws around here!!!!

I guess the TBI and the lady in the video, doesn't read their own TBI studies, which shows sex offenders have a LOW recidivism rate, but, they like to grandstand and put out bogus information to help themselves eradicate peoples rights.

Turd polishing: The act of trying to make something hopelessly weak and unattractive appear strong and appealing. An impossible process that usually results in a larger, uglier turd.

This is actually a very accurate description of amending this law.

Every individual is painted with the same brush. OMG! What a messed up system.

"We have banished them from our cities and towns, from their jobs and have made life so miserable that many abscond because they have been legislated out of homes and jobs. They are compelled to flee rather than be treated as sub-human. Enough is enough.

They should be executed for the first offense, then these problems wouldn't exist.

They are sub-human, and they know it.

The registry is nothing more than a tool for vigilantes and should be abolished.

Idiots like you should be executed upon first offense, maybe then it would deter the rest of the idiots from opening their mouths.

I would rather people be safe than sorry. Someone needs to go through the registry. Whether it is to find out where the offenders are or find out that they don't need to be on there. Someone needs to do their job.

If the registry was not only up to day, but accurate at listing the ones that are dangerous, then we could get on with more important things. A friend of mine is a convicted sex offender, convicted of an offense from over 20 years ago. He has not reoffended, in fact, he has been released from having to register in TN because of his staying clean and not committing any offense at all. I have noticed people on the registry that offended in the 70's but there is no record of any other offense since then. Should they not have the opportunity to be released from the registry?

We expect others to give us a second chance when we need one but as a society we are not willing to give those who screwed up once a second chance. That said, if they have been given a chance and then re offend, then it should be life w/o parole, imo.

Actually, you can polish a turd. I saw it on Myth Busters. It's still a turd though. It's just shiny. Would you want a sex offender living next door? What about a child sex offender living next door if you have children living with/often visiting you? Would you really want to take a chance?
