Octavius,
I have lived in Memphis all my life & I really care about what happens here. But, I grew up near the railroad tracks on Southern Avenue & that part of town is one you don't want to be in any more. Grudgingly, I have to agree with Stepho that I can't recommend anyone moving here anymore because of the crime. Unfortunately, the mayor and his buddies don't care about this city. They're just around to take from it and consequently not a lot gets done that will really help the city solve its problems. It is sad but true.

At least for the next decade, if you've got options other than Memphis I encourage you to look at them first.

Well I have to agree. I grew up in Memphis, but we moved to mississippi because of the crime. I still have to go to Memphis like 4 times a week but at least I don't have to sleep there and I don't have to worry about someone busting in my door and robbing me at night! Just in the last month when I was in Memphis,my son got car-jacked, my camera got stolen and my cell phone got stolen. My son is only 22 and already 3 of his friends have been shot. I would not reccomend raising kids there!! Also, the schools suck!

Is mud Island a good area?

Mud Island is generally populated by young professionals and young families. Some upscale housing and a couple apartment communities. Limited shopping and services available. Easy access to downtown.

Nice area but not too far from some pretty rough parts. I have a friend that lives there and she says she loves it. Says that grocery shopping, movie theaters, household shopping, etc. is an issue because there is little available on the island and residents have to travel to Midtown to get alot of stuff.

Had a rear end collision in front of Methodist University Hospital a little while back. I was not hurt but very shaken up. I did not move the car from the middle of the street because I didn't want to be charged with leaving the scene, so I called 911 for help from police. After sitting in there, blocking traffic with some of them raging, I waited patiently for over 20 minutes listening to " all operators are busy please do not hang up, someone will be with you shortly",I finally moved into a parking lot and someone else called for assistance for me. Even though I was sitting there near the hospital, if I had been seriously injured I could have died waiting on a 911 operator. Surely Memphis needs more lines and/or operators for 911.Could it be they were taking a coffee break? Rediculous!!!

Is the Whitehaven area safe? What can you tell me about this area?

Personally, I would avoid Whitehaven.

The safest areas are going to be well East or North East of downtown. East Memphis, Germantown, Collierville, Cordova, Arlington, Bartlett, Oakland, Eads, Lakeland. Or South of Memphis in Southaven or Olive Branch, MS.

Mud Island, Midtown or South Main for a more urban and/or Bohemian atmosphere. However, you sacrafice a little bit of safety to live there.

As Bugs Bunny used to say, "Ha Ha, that is two laughs." This is a joke. You and your unemployed wife and six kids. How many households are there in the Memphis metro area where the black unemployed husband is living with the wife and six children? Duh... maybe, let me guess, almost or less than none!

Don't move to Memphis unless you want to become another statistic. Remember that board on Homicide Life on the Street where they wrote down the nameof the murder victim and gave every homicide a number.

Don't listen to the negative post these people telling you. It's just like any other city.Just stay out of north and south Memphis and you'll be okay.Memphis is what you make out of it.
