used to go to the BBQ fest when it first started and it was the same...just watching them cook eat and party with a Tops BBQ stand for the common folks. why would anybody want to pay to go see this? the Houston Rodeo BBQ cook off is the same waste of time and $$

WELL!! Bye, bye fest if the paying guests can't at least have a few free sample!! Could control by issuing tickets. More fun for all and more exciting; also have a few concession stands for those who need refreshments!!

The contest is open to all who organize a team and who have sufficient funding to cook up the requisite dishes. The rules are available for anyone who wants to join in the "cook-off", but the teams have to pay their own way or arrange sponsorship in some fashion. That being said, it's not my cup of tea because the usual venue is too muddy and inconvenient for me!! Race has nothing to do with the affair, and I guess if Neeley's/Interstate was interested in participating to strum up more business, they would, and they would hand out samples.

that event is a joke ! and it IS populated by a bunch of mostly WHITE so-called contestants some with sponsorships, some with none, but the important point is that it really IS a private event, and is does not reflect the present mostly monirity culture of BBQ-cooking so dominated throughout history in the south and in Memphis It could be argued that it has been hijacked by a bunch of partying white folk folks ! just look at the LACK OF BLACK FACES visiting of particpating in each private party or stakeout ! the contrast is glaringly OBVIOUS that the participants in the private cooking don't HAVE a SINGLE BLACK FRIEND or ASSOCIATE !

that's Memphis for you

Memphis DOES SUCK anyway

all I have to say is that if you want blacks in the contest get together and do it man..you could get sponsors if your BBQ is good and break into that good ole boy regime and just get along..it's a different world you have the freedom to do what you want as long as you persue it..as for Memphis I've live in Houston 28 years and it's nice to get back to Memphis but the black white bs is BS..can't ya'll just get over the race issue and live

We as teams are NOT ALLOWED BY LAW to hand out samples to spectators. The health dept states we are not restaurants, we are competitors in the World Championship BBQ Cooking Contest. We are not certified by the health department to sell food, only vendors have heath department permits.

We will be disqualified from the competition for giving food to people not inside our cooking areas - ie. members and guests.

As far as your ability to eat with teams...JOIN A TEAM. Many teams offer memberships prior to the contest. Or tour the cooker caravan - a FREE tour of teams BBQ Booths. Or judge the PEOPLE'S CHOICE contest, where the public gets to taste and rate our BBQ...

Or scrape up the money to start your own team and enter the contest yourself. Every one of us teams started somewhere.

We teams pay alot of money to compete in this contest. My team spent over $11,000 of our own money (we are not sponsored) to compete in 2011. I'm sorry some of you have had a bad experience, but BBQ Fest is first and foremost a contest, not a food festival...It is one of the oldest BBQ contests in the US, and draws some of the biggest names in BBQ to compete. Teams are there to win the contest, not to feed the general public. That is how the contest has always been...A CONTEST not a FESTIVAL.

the MEmphis contest has always been a massive fraud even in the marketing of it very early on
the city purposely misled their own citizenry early on about the so-called "contest"
it is a private affair, and the only way you're in the "in-crowd" is to get INVITED to somebody's "booth" or "tent"
additionally, for a city that has a majority BLACK population, the vast majority of particpants, and VISITORS to the "event" are in FACT, WHITES who are invitees to the various "private tents and booths"
that's what makes the event such a glaringly and obvious misleading , parochial event
but that's Memphis for you : PAROCHIAL, and in fact a racist city, with or without the so-called BBQ CONTEST
they simply SUCK

Sucks...you have NO IDEA what you are talking about. I've grown up in competition BBQ, and have attended the MIM contest for over 2 decades.

It has ALWAYS been marketed as a contest, not a food festival.

The MIM website has stated in BOLD print the last ten + years that...and I quote

"This is a competition. Local health regulations prohibit teams from serving barbecue to the general public. There are barbecue vendors, as well as other food vendors that can sell to the public."

I have Asians on my team, I have Latinos on my team, I have Indians on my team, I have African Americans on my team, and yes there are whites on my team. As far as the other teams, there are teams from Denmark, Norway, Puerto Rico, and Canada just to name a few...It is an international event.

Oh and by the way...

PAROCHIAL
adjective
1. of or pertaining to a parish or parishes.
2. of or pertaining to parochial schools or the education they provide.
3. very limited or narrow in scope or outlook; provincial: parochial views; a parochial mentality.

This is the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BBQ COOKING CONTEST. There are teams from all over the US (26 states this year) and the world battling for the title of World Champion...not narrow in scope at all, it fact, its pretty straight forward, and far reaching, pretty much the opposite of PAROCHIAL

Memphis in May World Championship BBQ Cooking Contest, not the Memphis in May World BBQ Eating Festival...TEAMS ARE THERE TO COOK AND COMPETE, NOT TO FEED THE CROWDS. It has always been a cooking contest not an eating contest.

There is absolutely No Racism involved, you pay your money to enter the contest, and your team cooks in the contest...how is that racist?

So, please, I invite you to continue to spout your false accusations and information, it is afterall a country with free speech. But the at the end of the conversation, You're wrong, there is nothing racist about the contest.

the city is narrow, and I agree that is thus parochial - it is not some cutting edge progressive city

Who cares about phuckin "bobbi-q" anyway when your schools are among the worst in the nation ?? where your crime statistics are comparable to that of Detroit and Oakland ?

Memphis has a phuckin "bobbi Q" contest once a year during memphis in may - so WHAT ??

Racism is EVERYWHERE in Memphis, are you crazy ?? it's one of the most 'race-involved' cities I've ever lived in the United States !! from blacks, as well as whites ! doesn't matter, they're all backward

who cares about a cooking contest given that context of an undereducated backward citizenry and leadership ??

having companies like FEDEX, International Paper, AutoZone, St Jude, Wright Medical, Morgan Keegan and a few others has NOT ELEVATED MEMPHIS TN to a status that is competitive with cities such as Charlotte, Austin, Portland, Tampa, Nashville, Raleigh or beyond

keep your phuckin "bobbi-Q", and your contest, I'll take a bit of intelligence, great culture, true diversity of thought, super food (not bobbi q)
anyday over the crap going on in Memphis TN

Even your airport is terrible !

and your Memphis-based Pinnacle Airlines just filed for bankruptcy

FEDEX will also move some of their corporate offices out of Memphis in the next 2 years

Population of Memphis has declined for the last 20 years

Recent college grads have sense enough to leave that hole as well

The fact is that RACISM permeates every nook and cranny of Memphis life and that includes the goddam cooking contest on the RIVAH - I've heard racism and snide racist comments out of the mouths of many team tent visitors and drunkass rednecks when they are in LIKE COMPANY and you are an idiot
if you think I didn't realize what was being said CLEARLY and implicitly among the tent attendees I was with by invitation - and I left them to be drunk rednecks that they are

NO NO NO, Memphis has not grown up, pal ! you're just lying through your teeth

The entire thread was a conversation about the World Championship BBQ Cooking Contest...not the City of Memphis. Please take your comments about the city of Memphis to a different thread as they have nothing to do with the topic we are discussing.

As for what was said about the contest, I will kindly address your allegations of racism and give you my opinion, even though I believe your entire purpose here is to troll and cause a scene with your hate rhetoric.

The only part of your post that applied to the thread is, and I quote,

"The fact is that RACISM permeates every nook and cranny of Memphis life and that includes the goddam cooking contest on the RIVAH - I've heard racism and snide racist comments out of the mouths of many team tent visitors and drunkass rednecks when they are in LIKE COMPANY and you are an idiot
if you think I didn't realize what was being said CLEARLY and implicitly among the tent attendees I was with by invitation - and I left them to be drunk rednecks that they are"

I'm sorry you had that experience, but it only takes 1 idiot (or 1 team of idiots out of 300 teams) to ruin something and tarnish an otherwise amazing event. We don't see color on my BBQ Team and have members from many different races and backgrounds.

Yes there are rednecks at the contest, and yes some could be racists, but they are a VERY SMALL minority. There are also members of every race, creed, and color represented at the contest. The CONTEST ITSELF is not racist at all. Anyone can enter and compete in the contest, of any race, creed, or color. There are teams from many different countries and made up of different races. There are teams from the Northern US, from the West Coast, from the East Coast, from the Great Plains, and yes from the South.

The people in the thread were accusing the contest of racism, and being narrow in scope, and this is untrue. The contest is considered one of the biggest events of the Competitive BBQ Circuit, and prides itself on its international reach. It is far reaching and known to many as "The Superbowl of Swine".

Hey sauced, you sound like you think you're a MODERATOR, and you're not, so who cares if the "thread" isn't what YOU think it should be

Yep, you're from Memphis alright LOL you think everybody should think the same !, yep, that's Memphis TN for ya !

SAUCED, if the darn SuperBowlofSwine is somehow worthy of crowing about given the obvious shortcomings and failings of Memphis TN, I would suggest you go do something that helps lift Memphis from some of the WORST national rankings in a ton of classifications when farily compared to a host of other cities !!

oppps sorry, I guess you can't say that on this (read 'your' thread eh sauced)

Who cares if barbecue teams come from all over the nations???? that says NOTHINNG about the facts of living in Memphis - those attendees are visitors in the first damn place - it's nutty to even mention that

You can gloss over how chitty the city is if you wish !! anybody who has moved there from any other decent progressive city, will tell you and everybod else the city is horrible by comparison

whether it has BBQ or a freekin BBQ COOKING CONTEST is irrelant ! cities can have much much better FOOD than Memphis, and still are horrible places to live in - example ? City of New Orleans

Look, lots of cities have great BBQ ! dumps like Birminhgam, Montgomery, Macon, Jacksonville, Jackson Mississippi, and other cities like Kansas City, Austin, Charlotte, Anderson SC, Knoxville, Gainsville GA

Memphis is May is sorta dumb too - they always schedule massive events in the goddam rainy/stormy/muddy season of the summer ! how dumb is that ??? every damn year, the same thing happens, like clockwork

Now how smart is that for planning regional outdoor festivals ??

stoopid Memphis

UM NO YOU ARROGANT PEICE OF SHIT. ACTUALLY, I WENT TO GREAT SCHOOLS. I MADE AND STILL MAKE GREAT GRADES. I WAS RAISED IN SHELBY COUNTY, TN. YOU ARE AN IGNORANT STUPID PEICE OF TRASH. I'M IN COLLEGE FINISHING MY DEGREE MAKING GRADES WITH A 3.8 GPA. I AM ALSO GETTING MY DOCTORATE DEGREE. SO PLEASE DO THE WORLD A FAVOR AND GET LOST. MIM BBQ FEST IS TRADITION TO ME FOR GOOD FOOD, AMAZING FRIENDS/FAMILY, AND AN OUTSTANDING AMOUNT OF FUN. JUST BECAUSE IT IS BETTER TO KNOW SOMEONE ON A TEAM AND YOU OBVIOUSLY HAVE NO FRIENDS DOES NOT MEAN YOU SHOULD GO AROUND MAKING OTHER PEOPLE FEEL DUMB. YOU FAILED BY THE WAY IF THAT IS WHAT YOU WERE TRYING TO DO TO ME.
