this is so funny because I attended a local party last night in the Massapequa Fire House for a Mets Yankees partys. They have the biggest Bar and I was wondering who was going to respond if any emergency happened becuase every member was so drunk. The Hickville Road firehouse was filled to max capacity with drunk volunteer firemen watching the Mets and yankee's game last night.

Renovate 5 firehouse 2.3 Million really means it will cost $5 million by they time they are done. Some of the renovations include areas that have nothing to do with Firehouse. EX:

EX: renovate Kitchens , Catering areas , Bar lounge areas , parking lots , and storage areas?

I would like to know exactly what a renovation to a storage area consists of: New Bar again in the Wantagh Seaford District?

Vote NO , Say NO , I say close 4 of them and keep 1 Firehouse and make it a full time paid position.

I met with many Volunteer members of local houses for years and found them all to be FAT and real Star Wars type people who played Dungens and Dragons as kids. They were all mostly geeks and wish they could become real Firemen but were too dum and weak to pass a real exam so they all became Voll'ys and wanna be real firemen we like to call these people ( Fairymen instead of Firemen )

As a member of this department, I can clarify this. First, it's a very small station. Plus, the old station 3 was in shambles. It was literally sinking into the ground (it's based on waterfront property in a flood-prone area). It was over 50 years old and ready for replacement. The membership has gone up in recent years, and they were running out of room to store all the equipment. Not only that, when they purchased the new engine in 2004 (on a long-saved up capital budget I might add), they had to move the ambulance across the street to the long-abandoned old maintenance building. The engine was too big (width-wise) to safely allow guys to move about. First call, they dented the side of the ambulance because the door swung out so wide. So how stupid does that look to have 2 trucks across the street from one another on a corner where there's no traffic light for traffic control? Whatever your opinion, the new house is still being built as I type.

I agree these over the top firehouses on Li have to stop. The Vollys have gone way to far, cut backs are needed not fancy who can top the next towns fire houses. They mostly drink and get smoke cigarettes in these over the top fire houses for Vollys.

How many fire houses do we need in one town?

Time for a paid full tiem Fire dept.

I love how all of you look down on the Vollies and how you're all quick to say time for a paid fire dept with fewer fire houses. Paid FD with fewer firehouses means taxes go up and response times go up. Maybe you should be careful what you wish for. There is nothing wrong with the way things are now. Vollies need support not constant criticism. Firehouses built 50 years ago were not designed for the larger trucks of today.

Listen, facts are facts Vollys are are a bunch of guys with ugly wifes who just want to get the hell out and away from their familys. They are not properly trained and will never even come close to be considered real fire personel.
With that being said Vollys have very very slow responce time to real emergencys. I am not talking about 6 cars with blue lights running stop signs and red lights.I am talking about pumper coming to a fire streching hoses and discharging water. They are 6X's slower then and paid fire dept.
Plus now every firehouse is over the top and towns have numerous houses loaded with members and trucks waisting tax money.

Hey maybe we can do what the FDNY did and employ affirmatiwe action hiring on Long Island for that big, bad, paid Long Island fire dept that you want. I say we start hanging flyers in Hempstead and Roosevelt and maybe we can get some people to work phone banks and give wake up phone calls to those people "eager" for the job the morning of the test too!! What a bunch of clowns you are. Instead of typing on this website all night why dont you start teaching your "FDNY tactics" to the vollies since apparently the FDNY is the only fire department in the world that deals with real fire. So glad I passed up that job, Id have to work with ass clowns like Wanna Be!! Bet anything he is a disgruntled ex-volly anyway!

I cannot believe the bashing that goes on this site. First off, Long Island has some of the best trained firefighters in the country. I got hired on a paid department in Ohio and these guys are a f*ckin joke compared to the volleys on LI. All the bashing is supported by the UFA FDNY union hacks waiting to convert the Island into a paid dept. How is the Nassau P.D. working out? Good group of cops, but at $150K each a year they have bankrupted the island. State arbitrators will give "parity" to the paid FF's and you can work a 3rd job to pay for that house on Long Island.

As a retired FDNY member-if your naive to think that paid firemen in FDNY dont drink in the firehouse -you wrong. Not everyone-but quite a few. And they hope the IG doesnt catch them or they get hurt at a fire where they might need a blood test.

Did you know that quite a few FDNY members (active & retired) DO serve as volunteers in their home-town volunteer fire districts. Many hold officership and Chief titles with many serving the district with distinction for over 30 years.

Did you know that FDNY members must fill out a NYC form each and every year, asking the city permission to be a volunteer member in their home town district-as the city considers it "extra departmental employment". Though volunteers do not get paid one red cent- they do get tax breaks on their home properties and many receive a "pension" after servicing their department for many years.

So when all of you nay-sayers and morons get the real facys-check with your fire district to see who's in it.

To wanna be i hate to burst your bubble but some of the best trained firefighters are volunteer, i can only assume you think being paid means being professional... but professional is knowledge not PAY i am an ex captain of engine 4 Wantagh fire dept i didn't do it to party drink or take tax payers money i did it because giving back to your community it what makes your town a better place. I would suggest that before you open your mouth next time try engaging your brain you be amazed at what stupid comments won't pop out of your mouth. Ex captain k winthrop 694

I love the comments from these idiots that volunteers are the geeky guys with fat ugly wives, who couldn't pass the fdny test, etc. Your comments about these guys being geeky and having fat ugly wives probably stems from your deep seated anger from the times you caught your own slob wife cheating on you, and thought to yourself "hey im a real fireman, how could she do this to me?" (Maybe she even ****** a volly?!?!) But as for the comments about the volunteers being too dumb to pass the test, I'm going to just take this one as ignorance, although you're correct that many volunteers do want to be in the fdny, just like many non volunteers, most guys volunteer because they see the rigs on a run and feel they too could be a benefitial part of the department and be a benefit to their neighbors and their community.
To the guys claiming how bad the volunteers are about stretching lines, etc, I'm going to say either you witnessed a LI FD make a mistake at some point and assume everyones like that all the time, or you're one of those guys in some slow company in the city but think you're hot stuff so you bash on the vollies. I am a new york city fireman in a great house and I love it. I decided that with my experience I as well could be benefitial to my community and volunteer for my local department, so I did and I love it as well. I can honestly say these volunteers train more on a steady basis than most city companies do, and I have nothing but confidence in the guys I see responding on their own time.
As for the drinking in the firehouses, yes it happens, as guys are devoting the little free time they have to their community it is nice to have a beer or 2 with the guys and build some comradery, but in general I know guys are good with not getting drunk and getting on the rig.
I thank the people who do support the volunteers just as I thank the people that support city guys, obviously the systems not perfect as no public system ever will be, fact is if you do the numbers no one in the middle class would be able to live on LI, trust me or do some real research and math for yourself.
I doubt it will ever happen due to arrogance and ignorance but it would be nice to see some more comradery between the vollies and city guys as we're all brothers, let's not damage the FDNY's great image by bashing on guys trying to do the right thing, stay safe.

You sir, are an idiot. 1. You type with the grammar and spelling of a 3rd grader (it's a good thing you left your Dept name out, that would be very embarrassing for you to represent them) and 2. You obviously know nothing about the level of training of these firefighters as they are trained at and maintain state and national certifications. Yes every one of them otherwise they wouldn't be able to obtain any kind of insurance.
