Well, Andy I agree with your fustrations as a taxpayer here in the Deer Parkdistrict. I for one have been reviewing the statistics for graduates. For years, I have been disappointed in the numbers going on to college. Quite frankly, parents cant afford the loans and now the economy being where it is, the job outlook isn't good.
If the children even get a small sholarship it in most cases or 98 out of 100, wont even cover a year of textbooks.
I was present several years ago at the scholarship ceremony at Deer Park HS. It was not good. Only 2-3 children received a fair amount of mony , that is $500 and one $1,000.
I wish management would solicit the businesses in the area for scholarchip money. Mostly all the businesses dont even know how to donate money to the benefit of the children, remember the children and not some frivilious neon sign, like you see around and about some schools these days. What a waste of money that was!
I agree $94,000,000 is alot of money. Sadly, everyone is reaching and grabbing for it in raises and other benefits, perhaps what the business work calls perks. It is a shame that the taxpayers dont even know what and where all this money goes.
I hope the Attorny General puts some light on the Deer Park school budget as well as the rest of long Island.
This business as usual, "my thing, our thing" mentality is dying and so are all the crooks and not to be funny grave robbers.
What is sad,is that the history of Deer Park has become stagnent. No one knows much about Deer Park. It has just become a super fast paced small yard in suburbia.
People are selling their homes, due to the school tax. We are seeing more and more illegal two and three family homes with transients moving in and out. Litter, graffiti and general disconcern for neighbors has become more and more prevelant in these trying times. The community is faltering. Why, the older residents, senior citizens are leaving . The school taxes are a runaway train. The BOE has become a monster, a big hungry business spending like crazy. Every year they have asked and received another increase. How patriotic is that? Not at all.
Lets hope the board stands up and says no, to any new spending.

There are no goals, no productivity goals for teachers, administrators, assistant supers(3 I might add, I dont know how they dont bunk into each other doing nothing but generate clueless meetings with no accomplishments) etc, etc, etc., no management goals,no savings goals, no nothing. It appears to be an exercise in nothingness, like hurry up to the meeting, sit down and wait. Who could ask for a better job? Perhaps 1,000,000 people like you and me.
Sadly, it will be business as usual as the days and weeks after the budget vote since Moms and Dads rush back to work, in many cases two and three jobs to make ends meet and....pay the school tax. Thanks

Oh! My! How in the world can 5,000 students need $94,000,000 to get an average education??
I applaud the parents for their children that excell.
But $94,000,000 is outrageous. Government needs to intervene. I am broke. I shop the Dollar store for caned goods and dont know when help is coming to fix this school budget. I dont know if I should laugh at the amout required to operate this educational institution or cry.
My fellow seniors are selling their homes because of the school taxes and heading south where the taxes are less then 1/2. Will someone save us from this mess?

I agree Senior with empty pockets.$94,000,000 is a round number. Try $94,471,000.
Isnt that a bit much.
In todays Newsday they speak of capping all this runaway taxes on Long Island. Hopefully, it will be resolved ASAP. I just don't forsee any cap on spending Over in Deer Park , administrators just got a $7,000 raise. I bet most homeowners never received a raise like that!
Why are so many people disconnected from the outside world? Don't they realize an $800 would of been enough? How do you justify an $7,000 raise with taxpayers money!
The taxpayers would never approve of that.
Question is, who did?

John,$7,000 is about as much as my social security benefit a year. The West Baby says Board of Education did, but who is the board of education? Was it one persons idea? Did the employees write on a piece of paper ,we want 7,000 or was it the left over money in the prior year budget? How do you get a 7,000 raise in such a small community and for what acheivement was this amount determined?
DOES THE SCHOOL BOARD HAVE ANY SAY ON THIS MATTER?
How many employees received this raise?

Oh my, can I get a job there to, as a senior citizen? Maybe in the security patrol car that drives around deer park, so I can run errands and visit the community pantry to pick up some canned goods.

You know you can't get a straight answer from anyone. Saying the "bored" of ed is not an answer. I dont know all these actors names but we are all in serious trouble. I realize some nuts even work for the BOE, so they think their unintelligent answer still work. Well, those old timers are all gone from long island. The younger people wouldn't mind pickets in front of the house like years ago at least you could video tape the whole thing to take legal action. I am not saying this is all a form of extortion, but the people at the top need to be held accountable.

I JUST REVIEWED MY NEW TAX BILL. MY SCHOOL TAX WENT UP ANOTHER $300.00 IN ONE YEAR FOR THE SCHOOL TAX. ISN'T THAT JUST GREAT.LAST YEAR IT WENT UP 5.5%$300.00 AND THIS YEAR 5.1%.IS THIS THE 4300.00 CLUB WE HAVE HERE IN DEER PARK????
HOW CAN THIS RUNAWAY TRAIN BE STOPPED. IT IS COSTING ME 440.00 EVERY MONTH TO JUST PAY A TAX ON THE SCHOOLS. I DONT EVEN HAVE A CHILD IN SCHOOL. HOW CAN I AFFORD THIS ? DOES ANYONE CARE? DOES ANY POLITICAN CARE. I JUST RECEIVED A FLYER FOR THIS ASSEMBLYMAN RAIA, NOT ONE WORD ABOUT LONG ISLAND CORRUPTION AND THESE WILD SPENDING BOE PEOPLE. HE MENTIONS EQUAL PAY FOR EQUAL WORK, BREAST CANCER, CHILD CARE AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.
IF THIS ISN'T POOR TIMING OR A SIGHN OF BEING OUT OF TOUCH WITH REALITY I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS!
HOW CAN THIS NUT SEND OUT A FLYER WITH NO MENTION TO ANTI CORRUPTION OR RUNAWAY SCHOOL TAXES. I WILL REMEMBER THIS COME ELECTION TIME. ANY POLITICAN WHO WONT STEP UP IS GOING TO BE VOTED OUT. THESE SCHOOL TAXES ARE HIGHWAY ROBBERY. YOU CAN BARELY GET THE PEOPLE IN CHARGE TO ANSWER A QUESTION. THE ONLY TIME THEY COULD SPEAK IS WHEN THEY WANT MORE MONEY.
HOW DO WE TELL THEM WE HAVE NO MORE. DO WE NEED TO SUE. THIS NEEDS THE GOVERNOR AND ATTORNEY GENERAL TO ACT ON. I PRAY THEY DO...WE CANT AFFORD NO MORE.
THEY NEED A REALITY CHECK...NO MORE INCREASES. I WILL CALL THE LOCAL PANTRY SOON TO COLLECT FOOD THE STUDENTS ARE COLLECTING AS A COMMUNITY EFFORT PRIDE INITATIVE.....DONT THEY KNOW, WE ARE BEING ROBBED, EXCEPT THESE ROBBERS WEAR CHEAP SUITS AND CARRY BALLPOINT PENS......

Hi Andy.
I just received Lou D'amaro our suffolk county legislator.
He was part of a committee to find ways to save taxed out taxpayers money. Although many homeowners are suffering and some lost there homes even a wisper in this direction is something.
Did you know these politicans get tons of money to distribute within their district. Maybe they should start using all the excess left over from not distrbuting it within their district to pay some of these school taxes.
In Brooklyn, some politican takes all the senior citizens every year to sunken meadow park for a steak barbeque on him. I bet he is re elected all the time. HeHHee.
Well, Legislator Lou and committee came up with a 57 page document with 25 ways to lower cost.

Well that was nice. Do you think we'll see all 25 ways put into action to help the homeowners.

NOT OVER MY BMW. It could well be just another ploy till the summer events wash away the tears from getting your tax bill for this year. His postal flyer goes on to repeat local news already published at an earlier date. Can you beleive these politicans? They never learn to do their job. They want these offices and then pop up here and there to hug themselves and avoid any real issues.
Well, gotta go to work, those taxes are thwe reason.
In NYC the children get far more services from their schools then ours.
The plus on Long Island is for some reason there are more family units and with that producing good kids.
Its going to take a full scale investigation to start straightening this school tax bill out.
It appears the good old boy and girl network continues. Oddly, the library tax is just as bad and is quickly joining the assault against the homeowners also. How does a homeowner tax of 290.00 for the library sound just in Deer Park. It should be more like $7.00, thats the amount of times I went there to get "free information".
I hope taxpayers start a revolt and the next tax vote they say, No.
No because there are no jobs paying over 30,000
No because college is another wipe out expense
No because the money is poorly managed
No because inflation doesnt warrent it.
No because no progress is made for kids future
No because we have had enough
No because we dont have the money

MR. MILLS WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH. COME TO LONG ISLAND AND STRAIGHTEN THIS MESS OUT IR RESIGN AND LET SOMEONE WHO CAN.

How do you blow away over $4,700,000 in a few weeks?
That is the money Albany gave to the District!
WWOW, what did they do with the money?
Gave the superintendent a fat raise $15,000.
Gave the administrators a $7,000 raise

Deer Park BOE is now asking for 45% over the next 5 years, 8% a year.

Time to get rid of the whole mess.
The best and most important employees as in police, fire department, and other essential major services to the city of new york applaud when they get a wopping 3%.
For years the mayor said job well done to people that risk their lives daily and they get a 3 year deal, at 2,2 and 3. Its approved and done.
Everyone is happy. On Long island you work for the board of ed and want 45%. Well, I call that disneyland numbers. We need Mr. Mills to answer what the hech he does all day and when is he going to address this crime against taxpayers. DO WE NEED TO HIRE OUR OWN ATTORNEY TO REPRESENT TAXPAYERS? SIBEN AND SIBEN?

Your a good detective. I know $4,700,000 that the district received weeks before the annual vote on our yearly increase was a large amount of money. I know spending over 4 1/2 million dollars in a few short weeks is really hard. It appears that these monies to help cover the burden to homeowners may of been used to give the superintendent a $15,000 raise and all the administrators a $7,000 raisse. Is that what Albany sent the aid for? No, it was to offset the expenditures and lower the tax. The taxpayers received a drop in the bucket instead of a decent reduction. The 25,000 homeowners should of received over $400 reduction in their tax bill. With the cut throat individuals in charge they decided to blow the money. Al least 99% of it and give the homeowners a $4.00 tax reduction. What a crime?
Do you think Albany will send more money when they figure out through auditors what the district did with the money? Absolutely not.

Add to that , free cell phones being used for nothing official and probably an contract for them you would laugh at and of course the most up to date versions. I wonder what the cell phone bills are that we pay? Originally it was to call parents in an emergency, but all my calls came from office phones and not cell phones. I wonder who monitors there use and do they reinburse the BOE for personal calls. I know that NEWSDAY ran an article at one time about cell phone abuse but they never touched base on the school districts. Or how contracts are awarded for repairs and also the padding of the contract to provide kickbacks to the person who can call a contractor. I am sure NEWSDAY will continue to follow up on all the corruption and I hope they come to Deer Park with a FOIL request to see what is going on in this small community and the corruption we are dealing with. 25,000 homeowners foot a $94,470,000 bill every year. This is extortion you know and I know.

If you want to catch a big crook, just pose as a contractor willing to payback 10-15% as a finders fee.
I am sure you will find alot of business in the sub-burbs at the taxpayers expense.
The person in charge of the whole shabang is up in ALBANY obviously he's out to luch as his door says all day long. Anyway, who wants to take a 4 hour ride from Albany to Long Island to see for yourselk what is going on, especially if you suffer from an overactive colon.
It seems no one really cares. I will bring this to the table when election time comes around. If any politican ducks, they dont get my vote.

The State needs to take over. No doubt about it. This is the biggest mess I've ever seen, Why dont these people from Albany want to come to Long Island to help. I know they are just interested in the sea food and steaks and the Hampton yaya stuff.
The taxpayers know they are being ripped off, so now they need to address this school tax mess. When they do, and review all the expenditures, you know alot of people will be in trouble.
Even those who thought they were respected and above the community. They dont even work where they live.
I like the school superintendents. How do they make $185.000-$265,000. and for what? Who gives them this salary? who approves it? Certainly not you or I.
Who's in charge? Does anybody know , who's in charge of this asylum?

We havent heard from that useless MILLS in ALBANY on addressing any of this after Newsday published it. Maybe NEWSDAY needs to sit down with him and have him explain how he is overseeing Long Island Schools?
Its been weeks now and no one has spoken up ? This is not going away. We are tired of being robbed by our schools? There is no accountability, that for sure. No accountability, and the record keeping is attrocious. Look at Rosyln book keeping. Im sure they got great reviews from their peers. Did anybody look at the prior reports on the school district before that group got caught, of course only because someone was a pain in the butt with writting letters etc. They wanted to sweep it under the rug at first. SOUNDS LIKE ORGANIZED CRIME HERE

I doubt he even knows where Long Island is.
What a useless political appointment, add him to the patronage club register. Just a jerk crony himself living in the woods in a high end home, hasent done a dam thing on anything since he's been wearing out the wooden chair in Albany. Does the back of his pants shine too?
WHAT A DISGRACE.....

Well, over here in my town we have accounted for every penny spent. Our budget is a fine example of inpeccable artistic creativity.
We have only one expenditure so its easy to comprehend if anybody cares. To make it easy we only have one budget catergory called MISSELANEOUS STUFF.
We have this so no one is confused with the budget vote mailing.
I do have a question. How do you find out how much tax a business is paying and when was the last time they were audited?

I know a car wash with a line around the block every weekend, they use dirty water and are dumping underground that claims they only make $3,000 a week. How is that possible. Does anybody even check up on some of these businesses that they are paying their fair share? I doubt it..

Well, Newsday has been busy. Even though everyone has ducked since the budget passed, beleive me there already planning on asking for more next year. I just don't understand with the economy stalled, they are going to ask for more. How can you just spend like crazy. This budget is a mess from day one. A small town like Deer Park $94,471,000 is outrageous. How can I get some of that money. If we spent that on the town of Deer Park beautification every street would look like the Taj Mahal. We could even plant palm trees on Deer Park Avenue and rent an airplane hanger to put them in the winter. We could hire priccvate contractors to patrol our neighborhood, sweep our streets, and plant orchids throughout the entire community. We could decorate the town like its christmas all year round.
How do you spend $94,700,000 a year. The schools look the same as they did 30 years ago, raggedy shrubs, lawns, broken fences and gates, worn out signs and painted exteriors, asbestos floor tile and insulation, you can go on and on. But we have a $185,000 superintendent, aren't we lucky? Oh, and she has three assistants, one recently created position. They must be bunking heads there.
What a scam, I hope Newsday comes here and visits. Their investigators will turn up alot I'm sure. I hope they come soon. am sure with the no bid contracts, friendly vendors and consultants running amuck on Long Island, I am sure they are hiding in the woods around the local schools, waiting for the day to start to sell some useless equipment and supplies.
Dont forget there are less then 25,000 homes here.
This last vote only gave back a nickel to the homeowwners. They should of received over 100 back. WNAT MORE? GUESS HOW MUCH THE SCHOOL DISTRICT PID TO TROW OUT THEIR GARBAGE LAST YEAR ???
GIVE UP..$91,000...CAN YOU GRASP THAT $91,000. JUICY CONTRACT FOR THE GARBAGE CARTER COMPANY, DONT YOU THINK??
WHAT DID THEY THROW OUT IN THE GARBAGE NUCLEAR WASTE???
LETS FIGURE. CARTERS HAVE CONTRACTS WITH CUSTOMERS. WAS THIS A BID CONTRACT? I DOUBT IT.
AVERAGE COST FOR CARTING 40 YARD CONTAINER, THE SIZE OF A HOUSE FIGURE 650.00. DOES IT INCLUDE RECYCLING?
MAYBE THEY SHOULD SHRED THEIR OWN GARBAGE, REDUCING THE BULK SIZE 80%, BUY A SCHREDDER...THAT WOULD SAVE ALOT OF MONEY, BUT WHO CARES ABOUT GARBAGE, ITS DIRTY.
WELL, ONE OF THE THREE ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENTS MUST KNOW ABOUT THIS, IT FALLS UNDER THE MAINTENANCE AND GROUNDS AREA. WELL, CROSS YOUR FINGERS, WE COULD BE GETTING A LOWER TAX NEXT YEAR, OR JUST ANOTHER ACADEMY AWARD PERFORMANCE..

I'm movin' out!

Oh and did you hear that, on Monday morning, a handgun was found in a box hidden in the bushes at May Moore School? True! It was posted on the district website (now it's been taken off the site) and an alert was sent out via phone messages. Why isn't security doing a better job of patrolling at night. I see lots of people hanging around there late at night. What are we paying for security? Maybe Ms. Marino and her assistantants will each volunteer for night time watch duty at each one of the schools. Do something to justify their raises!

By BOE president do you mean Dennis Ryan? I dont beleive thats possible for one person who represents the community to just wave his hand and the super is given a 10% raise. I would like to know the entire story...., He isnt the one who says you get a 15,000 raise nor that administrators get a 7,000 raise, which did happen. It may be called dumping excess monies left over that needs to be burned before the new budget. How absurb.... He is a working man. He would know what it takes to even get a $800 raise per year. Lets not speculate here, something on this matter is misappropriation of taxpayer money. A raise should of been voted on by the public as a seperate issue. A 15,000 raise is approximately 10%. Its unheard of. This superintendent has been here two years. I dont understand how in the logical times we thought we were in that someone gets a raise of 10%.
WE DONT HAVE THIS MONEY FOR FRIVILOUS RAISES. THIS IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL. As well as the $91000 to cart garbage away a year, What the heck is really going on. I hope Coumo takes a good look at Deer Park expenditures, what a mess,,.AND they will ask for more money next year. What a useless entity. WHere in America do you get a 10% raise today, WAL STREET, HEDGE FUNDS, PROFIT SHARING....As they say, Who's on first?
