I know who they are. I'm also in the ninth grade, but I wasn't involved in it. Unfortunately, I have friends who were. They're all good students. They weren't cheating, they were only helping each other out, up until one person took it too far.
Dear Ninth Grade Student, The students caught were passing homework and lab answers on a facebook page. Biology test q's and a's were on the facebook page. It's not helping each other out it's cheating in order to get a higher grade. Passing blame because they got caught won't help these kids at all. It'll only teach them to pass the blame when they get caught cheating as adults.

Why is everybody making a big about deal about a bunch of 9th graders that are being punished for their mistake? This is not as serious as say, petty larceny or shoplifting. Is it?

No it's not serious , must of been a slow news day. These are some good, smart kids involved here that just made a stupid mistake. Hopefully they learn from their mistakes. They're just young and making mistakes along the path of growing up.

The BoE planted this scandal to get media attention. Next they will say this is why our schools need more money. Notice they used the State exams and labs. Exactly, because the State is who they want more money from. They will be asking State for security cameras, higher pay for teachers. If State does not come through they will ask tax payers to break the cap and pay more. They'd even use their own kids to get this done. Anything to have us pay more school tax and more state tax. That is the real scandal, our BoE in West Islip.!

Seriously? Is this your screen name for this hour "Kay?" Yeah they planned it, the kids planned it. And for the record there is no proof that it was a state lab. Pictures were not taken in the class, ask your friend, she has the pictures. Also it was 1 homework test, not a state test. It was wrong, but they did the time. Must be nice being the most hated person in our community "Kay"!

Can't blame board for this one. Can't blame the teachers. Can't even blame the kids. I blame the low life dirtbag parents who would prefer spending thousands on parties and smartphones and ipads than actually spending the time to parent their children. The parents of the kids are the losers. Blame them. They care more about not being embarrassed than about their kids growing up doing things right. Newsday should report about the loser parents.

Mrs Horvath the students used the facebook page to pass homework answers and cheat on an exam. There alredy is a district rule that no cellphones are to be used during school hours. You continue to post comments about everything without knowing about anything. I'm so happy to be leaving.
Mr Rick, the students didn't use cell phones during school hours, get it straight- photos were taken at home of labs! Get off Jessica's behind- you don't know what you are talking about.

This was a take home test! It would have been the same as these 12 kids meeting up at the library and working on it together. Get your facts straight. Its impossible to CHEAT ON HOMEWORK. Seriously people.

The gloating minority of this town is disgusting. To think that grown adults would create a "scandal" that involves 9th grade students, as a way of allegedly exposing "somthing" that doesn't exist is by far the lowest level that anyone in this town has ever sunk to. I do not know how some of you sleep at night. Can one actually "cheat" on homework? Can one actually "cheat" on a take home test? I mean, you can easily have a study group at home and share answers; you can get those same answers off the internet as well as a from a parent or a friend; these kids chose to leverage technology. Wrong....perhaps, but I believe we are splitting hairs. So, let's keep it all in perspective here. I do not know what their punishment was, nor does it matter to me personally. What does matter, is that not all 26 kids that were involved or had access to the "page" were punished; only 12 were. Why you may ask? Well, because the "parent" who printed out only 5 pages of a facebook page that was up since November, selectively printed 5 pages that didn't involve her child. Then went ahead and "reported" the "cheating" (not her child, of course)to school administration, who I believe took action. That same parent then went ahead and called the "media" so that some of those selected 12 could have their families harrassed by scum bag reporters and would then have the audacity to sit around and "gloat" that 14 year old children are now being used to seek retribution for something they had nothing to do with. You are disgusting people, scum of the earth as far as I'm concerned. There will come a day, however, when the favor can and will be returned, make no mistake; KARMA IS A BITCH.
