First of all, I am not one of the candidates.
But let me take a stab at it anyway. There was a meet the candidate night where you could have asked these questions, sorry you missed it.
In order to save money, which is vital given our current economic situation, would be cutting waste, excess. Do our athletic fields need to be revitalized? Well that is part of the current budget.
Do admins need the raises they received last year while programs were cut? I checked the budget last year, for example, all central admin received raises in the neighborhood of $7000 each while the reading budget was cut in half. The music program was cut, that is one we actually receive awards for and many of our students participate in.
Our Superintendent's contract was extended, with a heafty raise, for an additional two years before her current contract is up. The community had no input on that decision. We should have, it is our money.
Our Asst. Supt. for Business disappeared, literally, last summer, we are currently paying an interim about $800 a day, is this necessary? He made the paper this weekend for double dipping.
We routinely pump heat into our buildings when it is not necessary because the systems are so antiquated they have two settings, on and off. Tax payer money goes out the window when heat is on and we do not need it.
We are adding two Assistant Principals to the district this year at the elementary levels, is this necessary? Couldn't this be done cheaper with an administrative assistant or something along those lines?
We currently pay a number of outside coaches for our teams. Could this be done cheaper and more fairly in-house?
Our district just gave a contract to Xerox for super duper copiers. They are supposed to link to the computer system and do all sorts of fancy things. Problem is, our computers are too old to run the programs. We have expensive copiers with all the bells and whistles that only copy. Sounds like a waste to me. Also, I believe that our current BOE president now works for Xerox? Hmmmmmmmmmm!
Hope that addressed some issues. There is no way to have all the answers now. Hey I'm a fed up tax payer myself. What we need is someone on the board that will actually listen to the community, we do not have that now.
Ms. Parvey did a great job addressing this at the meet the candidate night. She said that although it is necessary to make unpopular decisions sometimes, if all the stake holders are involved in the process and know what is going on, at least they understand why certain decisions must be made. She said it is impossible to make everyone happy, but at least everyone would be on the same page and not feel left out of the process. She believes in great communication and involvement with the community.
Hey, thanks for being a concerned, involved resident. We need more people to ask the tough questions!!!

I just received in the mail another piece of propaganda, called THE STANDARDS, what a joke. It reveals the proposed budget for Deer Park.
Quick to note, a decrease in the tax rate on the front page, how slick is that, page 3 reveals a vague breakdown of expenditures.
What went up
+ 32%- Education??
+ 10%- Finance??
+ 14.2%-Central Services??
+ 9.79%-Special Items?????(What the heck is that)
+ 20%- Instructional Media???-Plasma TV's for DIST
+ 16.7%- Pupil Services ??
AND THE LIST GOES ON!!!!!
The Grand Total$$$$$$$$$94,471,150
94 million dollars........
Next year I would like a crystal ball included in this newsletter so I can figure out what the heck each listing means.
What a total disregard for efficiency and another great job at mismanagement, they should all be ashamed of themselves.

If I read it correctly, the actual budget went up but due to increased state aide and a large fund balance, they were able to bring in a decrease. I would like to know why they held such a large fund balance? Where did this money come from?

Many of the budget items do seem vague. Plasma tv's I have never heard of that in the district. New computers would be nice, the ones the kids use are archaic for the most part. There have been some new ones purchased, but many, especially those in the class are so old.

One of the big problems is the mandated programs. With No Child Left Behind, so many support and remediation programs are now mandated, the district has not choice but to run them.

I do agree though that things can be trimmed. Last year, departments were cut back, coordinators were cut, teachers positions were cut, yet central administration all received raises and our Superintendent was given a two year extension to her contract with a raise. WHY???

Let's spend the money we have on educating the children and giving them what they need, not raising the salaries of those sitting at district office.

Ask what happened to the guy Levenstein replaced? Why has that position not been filled in almost a year. Levenstein was a former employee of the district I believe. Nice pay if you can get it, add that to his pension and he is doing quite nicely for himself.

As for educators never going against themselves, I don't know about that. That seems to be the response of those that don't trust educators. Sometimes hard decisions need to be made and it may not be in the teacher's benefit. Administrators are educators and they have to trim staff, let teachers go all the time. Educators never going against each other is a broad statement.

What is going on now is very much an inner circle of people beholden to others, I don't know why people would fear an educator on the board. At least we would have someone there who knows about education and after all that is why I sent my children to school.

I have heard Dr. Parvey and Mr. Cangero speak, they are both administrators who know their stuff. They know what it takes to run programs and buildings. I think that kind of knowledge can be valuable when making the big decisions in our district.

I truly believe that now is the time for change, our district desperately needs it. We cannot continue with things the way they are.

Has anyone been to a board meeting where community members have been belittled and berated? I have. I have seen community members treated very rudely by members of the BOE, especially our current president. I think they sometimes forget that we elect them to those positions, they are to represent us, not their special interests.

I would not let a BOE talk rude to me. Whether they know it or not, their job is to serve the community. If that is beyond their comprehension, they dont belong here or anywhere. Bring on the rude employee, I will ensure he is terminated ASAP even if I call Mr. Mills in Albany including the governors office if need be. How dare an employee of the BOE think they are above the people they serve. I would not let this go if I was present.
Lastly, someone asked, how are these new peopl going to address the concerns of the community. I sincerely beleive that spending is reckless and indiscriminate.

Microsoft has a free computer for schools incentive. Even if this band of duds running the BOE ever though of contacting Microsoft by email, which you and I know they never did, because it interferes with working on your resume and sending it everywhere for a better job and pay in another district, they have special reduced rates for children programs.
In addition Dell computer also offers computers and reduced priced computers to needy families. I guess these board of Ed duds dont know that either, they are to busy looking for higher paying CD's and money maket accounts. Lately the best they could do is open an account at Commerce bank which took full page ads in Newsday, and get some reheatable plactic containers for the office microwave oven. What a joke, its time to ask people to step up to the plate. Ther is nothing wrong with honesty and HARD WORK and not who could make the most money for the least amount of effort. The public has been scammed enough

I believe the district is finally heading in the right direction... we have a tax decrease, increased testing scores, and the board, mostly Mr. Ryan, is finally doing something about greening up the schools. Deer Park is reducing the carbon output by 720 tons, that is huge.
I don't know if anyone has noticed this but this Parvey woman has only been in the district for 4 years, i don't believe she has enough Deer Park experience for this position (not job as previously stated, because last time I checked the board does not get paid a dime).
Also, has anyone else noticed that Bruce Sanders is running the election, not Parvey. I believe Sanders is a racist and will not let an African-American woman run her own campaign. It is pathetic that he drags this lovely woman into this campaign but will not let her run it because he thinks the Deer Park people are ignorant racists who won't vote for an African-American. I am deeply offended by this.
Everyone talks about cutting fat, but does anyone realize that the man running this election for Parvey/Cangero works two periods a day and gets to do union activites (in a union free district?) for the rest of the day. I think if Parvey and Cangero get in he'll be working 1 period, running the board the other 9 and will still be making probably over $70,000(estimate) on the tax payers dime.
These Teachers forget what the school district is about, not them but the students. When a district fails to comprehend that the students should be the number one priority, not the greedy teachers (not all, just those union leaders), then that is when the district falls into a downward spiral of overpaying teachers for less work.
All of these reasons are why I am voting Ryan/Wayne, I am content with keeping taxes down and helping the environment. Not giving teachers a 47% raise, because as we all know, every American is getting that kind of raise for working three hours a day.
I hope Deer Park opens its eyes to the falacies of Bruce Sanders and stays the course. Vote Ryan/Wayne on May 20th

If i remember correctly Mr. Cangero was actually fired because he wasn't exactly a great teacher or MIS guy or whatever he was, something that I would love to have on my board.
And also I have heard that Dr. Parvey's Middle School isn't expertly run... another great addition to the BOE i would think.
And may I ask all of these pro Parvey people on this board, are you Bruce Sanders, a member of the DPTA board or a Teacher? I tend to think so because nobody else in Deer Park has met Parvey or Cangero because Bruce Sanders is hiding them.

I do not want educators on my board who are run by a greedy union, it smells very fishy to me.

There was a meet the candidate night a few weeks ago. Both new candidate as well as a current board member were there. The BOE president was not.
I can tell you that Parvey is a principal in Middle Country School district and has two children in district. She wants to make the board more accessible to the public. She has a vested interest in the schools as her children are young and will be attending for some time. She has extensive knowledge of curriculum, how to run buildings, budgeting, etc.
Cangero is a life long resident. He is currently and administrator in Middle Country also. He has strong ties to the community and feels that there is much we can do to make Deer Park the great district it can be. He feels that he owes his community for all the wonderful years he has spent here.
I hope I was able to recap the meet the candidate night for you. It was hard to remember all the details.
Both candidates feel that now is the time for change, new ideas and fresh faces willing to listen to the community and make them a part of the process.
Please, do your best to get everyone to vote on May 20th. Let your voices be heard!
I was told that the Board President was in Albany for his paying job, so Bruce (I know this can't be Parvey or Cangero because Bruce doesn't let them out into the public), you shouldn't take shots at "The President" because he was supporting his family.
Secondly, I remember Both Parvey and Cangero saying that were going to have to raise taxes, and that is all we need in a time with an economic situation like we have in this country. Parvey and Cangero are totally puppets for Bruce Sanders who is just power hungry, and actually had the balls to ruin the celebration of the top ten students with his lies and complaining. And if i remember correctly, he did not congratualte the best and brightest of Deer Park once, but as it says on the DPTA website "We Care."

Some one asked can access a ride be made available for the senior citizens to come out and vote and get picked up and dropped off.
Maybe the ADMINISTRATIVE employees of the district that get free gas money should pick up the seniors or even use the district buses to pick us up so we can vote. Can you contact the senior citizen advocate in PHELPS LANE to coordinate this with the deer park senior centers please..

Lets keep educators where they belong IN THE CLASS ROOM, NOT ON THE BOARD!!!! Seems like there is an agenda here, hmmmm? Our current BOE is doing a fantastic job. This is Mr. Ryan's first year as president and I must say things are on the upswing, let's keep this going! Where have these two "NEW" canidates been? I attend many functions here in DP and I do not recall seeing either one, with the exception of the top ten BOE meeting (which Mr. Sander acted like he was playing a role on Jerry Springer) Mr. Cangero was there, which means Mr. Cangero attended maybe 2 meetings in how many years? Ms. Parvey, never seen her to this day! What makes either one think they will have the time or dedication to give our community now? Please do not think the residents of DP are ignorant. Vote wisely on May 20th.

As for Mr. Sander being racist, that is laughable! You are truly ignorant.
Shame on you for trying to play the race card, that is disgusting.
You have no education experience nor an education at all, yet you feel fully capable of telling schools, teachers and administrators how to do their jobs. Why should only being a resident for 4 years be an issue with Dr. Parvey? You keep leaving out the DR!!! Bugs you doesn't it.
The only fallacies (notice the correct spelling, see what an education and or spell check can do) being spread, are those coming from your camp.

What are you trying to hide by smearing the other candidates? Are there any skeletons in the closet which you are desperately trying to keep out of the light??

Actually, the public was more upset with Mr.Ryan's rude behavior that night at the meeting.

How do you define upswing? His new job with Xerox to coincide with our contract with them? Having his wife hired as an aide?
The green initiative in our district is being credited to Mr. Ryan when in fact Mr. Rooney A NEW MEMBER, is the one who first mentioned this as he works for KeySpan. Mr. Ryan as usual takes credit for everything.
As for keeping educators in the classroom, are you aware that EVERY DISTRICT has a teachers' union? And that EVERY UNION has a president who works a similar schedule in order to cover both jobs? Mr. Ryan is trying to make it sound like Mr. Sander is being given special treatment. He is NOT!
If you have not seen Dr. Parvey or Mr. Cangero then you simply have not been looking, they were introduced to Mr. Ryan at a BOE meeting. Gee, how is that possible if they never attend???
None of us want huge tax increases, it affects us all. If anyone actually thinks that a BOE president with no education or experience in education, and who openly attacks the teachers of this district is moving us in the right direction, then they must be looking for something different from their district.
I want the best education for my children without having to explain the behavior of the board to them.

First off, I'm not Mr. Ryan, I'm actually a proud African-American resident of Deer Park, so I have the right to ask Bruce Sanders why he is hiding such a brilliant woman, who has acheived her doctorate and has shown the world what African Americans can do. So I am not the racist, Bruce is, I want him to show off this wonderful woman to the world. Unless the reason he won't do this is because he truly believes deer park won't vote for a wonderful woman of color.

Just so you know, Ms. Marino is the Superintendent of Schools, she is not a Board member. And who do you think she answers to, the needs of the schools or the Mr. Ryan, the man who extended her contract by two years with another nice little raise, complete with perks?
I can assure you, that is a MUCH better deal than she has ever received at ANY of her past districts. Boy was she lucky MR. RYAN hired her and made sure she received a sweeeeeeet deal!

Open your eyes people, this has all been a POWER TRIP! Did anyone attend the Mark Wood concert last year? Awesome, great experience for the kids. The cost $10k, yes, through donations, wonderful. Still waiting for the new instruments that were supposed to come from that. Next year's show, Mr. Ryan wants the full TWO DAY $30K version. Do we have money for that?
Is it for the kids or so Mr. Ryan can stand there and be given credit for more of his wonderful work?
Ask where our money is going people!!!
