Fellow residents,

Now is the time for change, on May 20th vote for PARVEY/CANGERO.

Tired of being intimidated by the BOE, vote for those who will listen to community concerns.

Dr. Magda Parvey is an educator with two children in our schools. She has a vested interest in making sure our children are educated in the best possible manner.

Let's get tough Deer Park, ask questions, dig deeper, there is more there than meets the eye.

It is time for the arrogance and intimidation to stop.

Time to break up the inner circle.

There was a meet the candidate night a few weeks ago. Both new candidate as well as a current board member were there. The BOE president was not.

I can tell you that Parvey is a principal in Middle Country School district and has two children in district. She wants to make the board more accessible to the public. She has a vested interest in the schools as her children are young and will be attending for some time. She has extensive knowledge of curriculum, how to run buildings, budgeting, etc.

Cangero is a life long resident. He is currently and administrator in Middle Country also. He has strong ties to the community and feels that there is much we can do to make Deer Park the great district it can be. He feels that he owes his community for all the wonderful years he has spent here.

I hope I was able to recap the meet the candidate night for you. It was hard to remember all the details.

Both candidates feel that now is the time for change, new ideas and fresh faces willing to listen to the community and make them a part of the process.

Please, do your best to get everyone to vote on May 20th. Let your voices be heard!

Can anyone tell me whatever happened to Bancroft Burke? He was asst. superitendent of business and finance. According to the BOE's July 2007 minutes it states that now it is Gene Levenstien, interim, at a salary of $850 a day. No mention of why Bancroft left and also, how long does interim go on?

I know they were advertising for a permanent person to fill the position because I saw it on the District's link to OLAS (online application System). Does anyone know if they are actually looking to fill the position or is this an example of "double dipping" in our district. Is Mr. Levenstien collecting a pension? He is not very nice to Deer Park taxpayers that call with questions and ask for a response. Why are we paying him $850 if he is rude to the people that pay his salary?

I, too, think that it is time for a change in the BOE. I hope that when the new candidates are elected, they will do the right thing for our children instead of the administrator's pockets.

Yeah, the Burke issue. No one is talking about that. Very strange situation, the rumors around town are that he was asked to leave rather hastily!!! Something about missing money? Who knows. Strange that he disappears and we have a tax decrease this year. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm???

Our BOE is wasting a great deal of money on the interim, don't know him but he made Newsday for double dipping.

Did you see where the Superintendent's contract was extended by two years before her current contract is up? Crazy, that is what the BOE did with our last Superintendent and then we tax payers had to buy out the rest of his contract when he left early. YES WE PAID HIM TO LEAVE.

So what does our BOE do with the new Superintendent, the SAME thing, extend the contract. How about we let them finish a term first and then decide. It is really time for change, enough of these hush, hush deals that the tax payers find out about after the fact.

I don't think it is a matter of agree to or not. A lot of the staffing decisions are driven by enrollment and the student teacher ratio of special needs students. At meet the candidate night, all candidates agreed with that.

Teachers can be cut, but class sizes will go up, I for one do not want that for my kids. There is waste, but hate to tell everyone, without teachers, who teaches the kids?

The district cut teachers last year and then according to BOE minutes in July, gave central administration $7000 raises for all.

I checked, I was worried about crazy contracts too, our teachers are actually among the lower paid teachers on LI. Most districts pay a lot more believe it or not.

Besides, there are seven members on the BOE, two members are not going to be able to award crazy contracts if the others are against it. They know they would never be able to get approval such things.

I think it would actually be a good idea to have someone on the BOE who actually has experience in education, after all it is all for the kids isn't it? I want the best for mine!!

Experience in education is not going to cut the fat, or spend taxpayers money wisely. Years ago there was a resident/teacher on the BOE and she was all for the teacher$. Her husband would sit in the audience on open board nights and ask the "right" question$. Will an educator admitt that Deer Park pays their teachers a good salary, that Deer park teachers do not have to fear for their safety in the classroom, halls, parking lot or the safety of their cars??? New teachers can't even find teaching job on Long Island in a safe district at any price... St Joseph's College and Dowling have many many young teachers searching for a teaching position... Deer Park has taken back many of their BOCES students, can they take back some more$$$$$$?
We all want the best for our children.
We all want our tax payer money to be spent wisely. Will it even happen???????

Cutting the fat is absolutely necessary but the fat lies in areas most don't know about. That is the problem.

I want my children to have the best EDUCATION possible. I don't want my taxes to be sky high either, but I am not willing to have over-crowded classes and less programs just to save money.

As for the teachers fearing for their safety, it is not only the dangerous districts that pay well. While there are plenty of teaching candidates out there, I don't want a revolving door either. Stability is important in our schools.

Those that claim to have experience really only have experience at maintaining the status quo. The current atmosphere appears is very hostile and not conducive to a productive educational environment.

If the current regime does not think experience in education is important for the Board of EDUCATION then they really shouldn't have the position.

The information that the experienced ones are putting out there isn't exactly the truth either.

Hey, I have no experience with brain surgery, but why don't I show up and tell them how to run things. Shouldn't matter should it? According to our current BOE you don't need to know anything about education to run the ship here, so why not?

If I felt that the current group was being honest and had my kids' best interest at heart I could back them. But I have seen and heard too much, what they say publicly and what they say and do behind closed doors are two different things. I am sick of the dishonesty and manipulation.

It is time for change and I will vote for change!!!

Yes, it is time for a change.

I wouldn't want an inexperienced person doing brain surgery..

But, I would welcome a person who would cut the waste in the operating room, cut needless extra staff, stop purchasing materials from "friendly" vendors, run an tight ship, just to name a few qualities I'd look for.

We all want the best Education for our children.

But, I don't think having a school Principal on the BOE will accomplish that.

EDUCATORS NEVER EVER GO AGAINST EACH OTHER...

They will never bite the hand-that feeds them.

What I don't understand is why the only option is to cut so called needless staff. Cutting teachers who are not needed is sound, but cutting teachers to increase class size is not.

It is not a matter of educators going against educators. Staffing is often dictated by student need, ie, special needs students, of which we have many. The staffing requirements there are mandated by law. No district could cut that staffing.

Cut waste, absolutely, the friendly vendors you speak of have cost this district untold money over the years. Plumbing, heating, roofing, etc. have proven that this is a problem.

We need to cut waste, but there is no way a person will fit only for teachers just because they are educators. They answer to the public, if they did that they would be voted out of office. They are tax payers too, they don't want sky high budgets. Often the decisions are made for reasons that the public may not know. Get involved and find out why staffing may have gone up, don't just assume it is favoritism.

Why is someone running for the board from Middle country here in Deer Park? Why are you trying to replace people that just started. Where are your facts? We are getting a 25 cent reduction on our tax, insignicant I may add. Does the BOE work in partnership with the board?
Let me tell you something ParveyCangero. It is a known fact that as you mention they are both from Middle Country school districts that they will over embrace the BOE here. Our concern besides the children being number one, is the runaway taxes throughout Long Island, waste, poor management, silence instead of defense etc, etc.
I would be more interested in voting for a board that has a platform of reducing taxes and straightens out the matter of fact daily business thats going on. What about the businesses here in the community that cheat like crazy on their income taxes. They dont report their correct income. I can name several that dont even give you a receipt when you shop, including the liquor store in sunset city for years.
What platform are these two candidaTES running??
Usually it is to help themselves to a better, higher job in another school district. Your sale pitch is ok, but what are your real intentions?
I would vote for an honest long time homeowner, quite annoyed with alot of unanswered questions as to where all this money goes.
ADD TO THAT I AM GLAD THAT MR. COUMO IS FOLLOWING UP. I cant wait to read what he finds here and what the heck is going on with runaway school taxes. DEER PARK- YOUR NEXT..........

We just received a large amount of money from the state and our tax was to be increased but the new flyer in my mailbox reflects a 1/2 point reduction. This reveals that this school district is also not interested in being partners with the community that pays for it all. Why after all the millions of dollars in subsidy from the STATE are the taxes going down a paltry 1/2 point. Doesnt anyone in the school district have the strength to reduce spending? Reduce in that I mean a more efficient operation?
Try leaving the children out of it and focus on poor maintenance, un necessary overtime, pastry and donuts at conference meetings, trips upstate and anywhere in the world to hold a conference that results in next to nothing, free cell phones, free traveling gas expense. Who do you think your fooling?
I have lived here 30 years and have seen no changes come about at all. As a business minded individual I must tell you, Deer Park is fed up too. If you want to run for the board and litter deep park with your signs, why dont you tell us what exactly you will be doing on the board, besided using your position to gain a better position and embrace cronism, double dipping and whatever else has been going on.

First, they work for the Middle Country School district but they live in Deer Park. They could not run for the BOE positions unless they were residents. They have to work somewhere.

The positions which are up for re-election are not new people, they have been on the BOE for quite sometime, that is why now is the time for change.

As for the BOE working in conjunction with the board, they are one in the same, The Board of Education is the board.

Reducing taxes is only possible if Albany adequately funds LI school districts. The state imbalance of state funding is why our taxes are so ridiculously high. Districts must fund mandated programs and the money has to come from somewhere. Albany has never appropriately funded districts. Some districts upstate get more than needed, some districts give free lunch to all students just to use the money. LOBBY ALBANY FOR CHANGE!!

The new people running, Parvey & Cangero would like answers too. They both stated a desire to make the board more accessible to the community and to involve the community in the process. They feel that as tax payers, we deserve to know what is going on and where the money is going, that is not the case right now. Many decisions are made for the tax payer, not with the tax payer.

When we question, we are treated like imbeciles, or blatantly lied to. I've seen residents berated at meetings, that is not acceptable.

We have a decrease this year, insignificant as you said, strange that it comes at a time when two sitting members are up for re-election.

Parvey is Dr. Parvey and she has two children in district, she has a vested interest in the education of Deer Park students. Cangero is a life long resident who is now looking to get more involved with the district and community that is his home. He is a tax payer also, so fiscal responsibility is of course a main concern.

It is time to shake things up, there is a great deal of mis-information out there, some of it is just blatant lies. Do we really want people on our board who feel the need to be dishonest?

I for one say no.

I hope there are many more with me!

YOU DIDNT ANSWER MY QUESTION? WHAT ARE THESE PEOPLE RUNNING FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD GOING TO DO ABOUT SAVING MONEY?
YOU SAID, reducing taxes is only possible if Albany adequately funds LI school districts, is a reach into the hat response and incorrect.
What an irresponsible response, I am not impressed at all.
You are blaming Albany but Albany just sent Deer Park well over a million dollars. Why would you point NORTH and say, they need to adequately fund us.Well they sent money, when are taxes going down, the economy warrants it and so do the senior homeowners, they're disappearing into condos because they cant afford to live here. With all the new building going on here where are these taxes going? Is their a hole somewhere that it all is being dumped into?
Deer Park has received an increase from raising the TAXES every year, war or no warrecession or not, 9/11 or not and only resorts to reducing sports and other programs when homeowners have said NO. This in most part is the only avenue for children to afford college, through these programs. Sadly, not too many jobs are availble afterwards, and Long Island has double dippers and pension cheats all over even in county government, So how do our children benefit from this below the belt mentality? How can you even ask for a penny when people are losing their homes, cant afford clothes, cant afford health care and cant afford to park at the beach that God gave us. And have a local administrator earning $850.00 per day as an add on after retirement, right here in Deer Park.Do we need to continue and slap homeowners in the face with this type of thievery that you may call common practice.
Dont you realize that ALBANY knows something is wrong? Well, they do. They know that corruption is widespread, that cronism is rampant and any funding they provide will be thrown into new tires for the buses whether they need them or not, so to speak. That spend every dollar mentality so you can ask for more next year is a disgrace. Poor,Poor management.
If you are not serious, in the least about saving 1.00 in tax money for each of the hard working homeowners. then forget about me, I will not elect you and I will not support any lame ducks any longer. As far as rude Board members and school authorities. If I show up are are treated rudely, then I will ask that person to step down. Furthermore, I will take it to the public to dismiss this individual. How dare you, when someone in the community asks a question , you are obligated to answer in a professional demeanor no matter how ridiculous
the question may seem. Realize an answer is a logical intelligent response to a question and not a question followed by a question. I cant wait for Cuomo to audit Deer Park, and applaud their arrival.
With these school taxes out of control I will need a job at the school soon counting paper clips.
