Why are you trying to turn this forum into a religiuos thing.it is about a school principal that messed up big time not religion or my beliefs, or YOURS, for that matter.

Stay focused and stop preaching!

Seems to me like people are flying off the handle here and getting off course. Stick to the issue at hand..........Donald Shevlin screwed up royally, let him pay his dues. I say ISS for the big man....let him sit in a cubicle with all those kids he claims have no future and are rotten to the core. HAHAHAHAHA! He told my son that once, my son is now a doctor!!! So much for Shevlin!!!

I had my own run in's with this piece of garbage human being, he also told me my son would amount to nothing well news to all he is an Orthopedic surgeon! Making more money than we ever could imagine and making my family proud.

I don't think the Shevlin family is proud of anything he has done! More like disgraced.
He should do jail time for his drunken life mess!

As for him heading the math dept. What a joke, where is it in the budget? And once again N.Babylon is proving that the people in charge are a disgrace to the school district they run!
Laria is also some one less desired with his past, But that is a whole other story!!

Keep in mind that he belongs to the teachers' union, so he has immunity until he goes to trial. I was a teacher and knew of two situations where this happened. One teacher retired early, the other is back at work now.The union is very powerful!

See?

This is the problem. Where else in this world can you simply put three yrs. in and if approved, you are granted a job for life. A job where there is no accountability. It doesn't matter if you do a good job or a bad job. Why? Because these Teachers are protected by the strongest Union in the country.

The School can't even fire a teacher who is suspected of being a predator. No, they have to give them an admistrative position, with pay, until his contract is up.

There needs to be accountability!

Mayor Bloomberg is trying to make the teachers accountable, but the Unions are having a fit and screaming like bancheese.

Wake up people! When is enough going to be enough. This guy is making over 100 grand, not to mention Full medical benefits, retirement package, and he only works 144 days a year!

This is the real crime!

For someone who went to school with Don and thought he was a punk 30 years ago, this is the worst possible news. I either wanted him to remain principal and be tortured by the negative PR, or be fired. Apparently I lack the creativity of the NB Super and board. They found a way for Don to keep his income, lose most of the pressure that was on him, and be given a cush job that the district felt didn't matter years ago.

I'LL ADMIT I HAD AN AXE TO GRIND BUT THIS IS NOT THE HAPPY ENDING I WAS HOPING FOR!!!!!

One question: If, by some miracle, he has to do jail time, does he keep THIS job???

To a some degree I agree Zoe. But you have to remember that teacher's unions came about because administrators were keeping favorites and firing teachers they didn't like - regardless of capability. Imagine being let go because you supported the wrong board member, or spoke out in favor of an unpopular student. That was the kind of crap that was going on before unions! I do agree though, that the pendulum has swung a bit too far in favor of unions. There has to be a middle ground. But elimination of unions would cause just as much trouble as keeping things the way they are.

And no, I'm not now nor have I ever been in a union.

Nice sentiment Kristen. BUT, do you know how many alcoholic drinks your beloved prinicpal must have consumed within an hour to score a .23? Around 10-12!!! To have that many drinks and then get behind the wheel of a car? That, my dear, is beyond the scope of giving someone a "break"!!

I need to get the heck out of NB. There is so much corruption here (my husband works in the district, and knows a lot of what oges on) many residents are unaware of most of it. It's sad, since there are so many dedicated teachers, and a lot of good kids. But the bad stuff just spoils it all.

Yes i understand what Shevlin did was wrong, but u guys dont know him to say all these negative things about him. Yes Shevlin has a serious drinking problem n i think he should get help right away before he does anything else. When Shevlin is working n doing his job as principal he wasnt drinking , he was helping other. Thats my opinion and its ok if u dont agree with me, to tell u the truth i think its good he isnt principal becuz he isnt a good role model for kids like me.

You can't play "what if" though.
Yes he's supposed to set a good example, but no one is an angel or perfect.
Of course you can - it's called being responsible and thinking before you act. Something Shevlin should be teaching the children by his behavior.
I hope the tax payers really hold the school board accountable but I doubt it. Shevlin makes North Babylon School system look bad.
