Priest takes center stage in controversy

Full story: Newsday

One of James Lisante's tasks when he was in the minor seminary in the 1970s was to get a public figure to come speak each year.

I was a parishioner in Our Lady of Lourdes more than 10 years ago. Father Mason was Pastor then and I can honestly tell you that I NEVER walked out of mass feeling hopefull or feeling the power of God's love. Every homily was on premarital sex, abortiion & condoms. I walked out of the Mother's Day mass with my new born son because I was celebrating my first Mother's Day and did not want to hear about abortion on that day. I would also like to state that when there is a "Childrens mass" being served, the homily should not reflect upon such things. I do not want to explain to my young child when he asks "Mommy, What is a condom?" During that time in my life, my husband & I taught pre cana. Father Lisante was the directing priest. He was wonderful, insightful & refreshing. He was full of love, hope & encouragement for the engaged couples. Father Mason drove all of the young families out of that parish. I myself went to a neighboring parish for the rest of the time I lived there. Hats off to Father Lisante who will definately have an uphill battle winning that parish over and the cult following Father Mason created there.

Hey Bart Jones,
Must be a real slow day in Newsdayland. Running the same story about a statue in Our Lady of Lourdes. Who cares !!! Tom St. Pierre left the priesthood, and he is the one who is quoted. Why? Look's like Tom St. Pierre is jealous of Msgr. Lisante.
Why is there a statue of Our Lady of Fatima in a parish named Our Lady of Lourdes? Can anyone please explain that to me.
The Fr. Blokey story was last weeks news. Though alarming to read, one must place the blame on the Diocese of Rockville Centre. It is the repsonsibilty of the Bishops office to do background checks on priests, not the pastor.
Lastly, Msgr. Lisante has the right to say who is likes in a Presidential election. Doe's Bart Jones go after the Rabbis, Protestant minsters, when they have the candidiates talk in the Churches and Temples? Oh, I see Separation of Church and State only applies to the Catholic Church.
Bart Jones should stop writitng articles about nothing, you're killing trees with nonsense stories.

Hey Bart Jones,
It must be a slow day in Newsdayland. Why are you running the same article that you wrote about last week?
Tom St. Pierre left the priesthood and amazingly you found him to slander Msgr. Lisante's name. Shame on Tom St. Pierre. Being a good reporter, you could have called the 400 other priest in the diocese, who could have spoken highly of Msgr. Lisante and his work.
I have a couple of problems with the article.
(1). Why doe's a parish have a statue of Our Lady of FATIMA in a parish named Our Lady of LOURDES.
(2). Msgr Lisante spoke about John McCain and gave a blessing at a Republican fund raiser, not at a Church. Why is it OK that Protestant Churches and Jewish Temples can endorse Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton and the media never addresses that issue? Separation of Church and State applies to all religions.
(3). Regarding the Fr. Blokey situation. True it's very alarming to read that the Diocese of Rockville Centre never did a background check on Fr. Blockley, but to BLAME Msgr. Lisante is wrong. Everyone knows it's Bishop Murphy who was wrong for failing not to do a Background check on Fr. Blockley. We expect nothing from Bishop Murphy, who comes from Boston, the heart of the child sex abuse scandal.
Bart Jones go out and write an article that is News worthy, this is just a trashy article.

Father Lisante came to my parish in the late 70's as a deacon, then later became a priest. He was an incredible speaker. Just to be in his presence you can see how he truely loves being a priest. I am also not suprised that he is a "celebrity priest", why wouldn't he be. He has a gift, I think the church should be happy to have him representing us. Especially in this day of age, when the media loves to rip us apart.
Father Lisante is a light in these times, I will never doubt that. I would love to have Father Lisante at my church.
I have no poltical agenda by writing this. I am not voting for McCain, even though I do not believe in abortion. I still respect Father Lisante's endorsemnet. The Catholic Church usually stands behind the pro-life candidate, since when is that an issue among Catholics.

Lisante is a self-serving egomaniac who has no qualms about criticizing others for every little misstep while he ignores rules and does as he pleases.

It would not surprise me at all to find a sex scandal attached to someone so obsessed with others' sexual practices.

While I deplore both the diocese's and Lisante's actions regarding the priest brought in from outside the diocese for the last eight years, I have to wonder about Newsday's spin in this article.

A month or so ago, when Newsday ran a story about Bill Brisotti, a priest more in communion, shall we say, with Newsday's political views, the article was 100% positive with no input from any other priests and no negative comments from parishioners. Could it be that because Lisante supports McCain, the view from Newsday is a little different?

MISTER Tom St. Pierre left the Church, his collar and his vowed comittment. Why is he an expert on a faithful priest who is bearing the heat of the day? He recieved the "priest of integrity' award from voice of the faithful on the day he announced he was leaving the priesthood! What a sham! He and VOTF are both frauds! Bart, get a compentent and respected person to be your source for "inside" information on the Rockville Centre priesthood. Take Pierre and Toomey off your pay rolls now!! The are yesterdays jokes -- only their egos keep their names in the press. They should have enough sahme to fade away like the ex priests they are -- they left the Church but still have soooo much to say about it. Really leave already Pierre and get a life!!!

St Pierre is right.

Lisante deserves scrutiny and punishment.

And you need psychiatric help for using the name of an abuser priest. Is that your idea of funny? All it does is hurt people.

What a horrible thing to say. Father Lisante is an attractive & dynamic person. Lets face it, the American people LOVE ATTRACTIVE. So why not use these God Given gifts to reach people. I wonder if a less attractive priest doing Father Lisantes work would be under such scrutiny. Father Lisante uses all of his GOD GIVEN talents to spread God's word via mass, media or other means. He reaches the young community who are the future of the Catholic Church. It seems you need to dig a little deeper into your Christianity to see the good in people.

Well, it sure didn't take long for Msgr. Lisante to step on a few landmines, did it? To have an unregistered, unvetted, priest in one's parish unknown to the Diocese is de facto a serious violation of Diocesan regulations; to remove that statue from the sanctuary is bone-head move in a parish like that; and for Newsday to trot out Tom St.Pierre for every story betrays their agenda too.
In my opinion: a pox on both their houses.

It's the diocese of RVC that is to do a background check on all priest, once again Bishop Murphy failed in his job, not the pastor.

The Bishop can't do a background check on a priest if the pastor does not make his existence known to the Diocese. Lisante did not inform the Diocese that he was hosting this on-the-lam priezt for 8 years.

The Diocese was FULLY aware of who Fr. Blokey was. Bishop Murphy was part of the Scandal in Boston and lied about his role with the children being abused. So lying about not knowing who Fr. Blokey was, comes very natural for Bishop Murphy.

The truth, spoken at last!

Like his little friends who are climbers and egomaniacs, his needs are the only things being served by the priesthood. He loves the dress-up and loves the glory.

And I would not be surprised if something gay doesn't pop up sooner or later. All this talk about condoms, sex, etc. HAS got to be a cover for some deep seated darknessin his own life.

This Fatima statue and his friend who got tossed is but the tip of the Lisante iceberg.
