Pet food recall sparks panic among owners

Full story: Newsday

At first, the pet food recall didn't much worry Jack Friedman. His cats love Iams canned food but had never eaten the "cuts and gravy" style that was part of a massive, nationwide recall of tainted dog and cat ...

My guinea pig was on Kaytee food as well, tragically i found her dead with a purlpeish black ring around her abdomen, can this be a sign of kidney failure, did this happen to any one else? I dont know if it was just the rare breed of a guinea pig, "Skinny Pig" that may have caused her death, but im leaning more towards her food after hearing these stories.

I recently switched my bird feed to Animal Planet Gourmet made by Kaytee and our beloved cockatiel "Butters" died after eating it for less than a week. We've had Butters for over 6 months and he was doing so well until we decided to change his food. I acutally thought that buying more expensive bird food would be better. Our two other new cockatiels died as well within less tha 3 days after taking them home from the pet store and the only conclusion we can come up with is the cockatiel food made by Keytee and endorsed by Animal Planet. Can anyone verify if this item has been recalled. I am not looking for a lawsuit but I just want this product pulled from all the shelves. We purchased ours in Target located in Burbank, CA.

I emailed Kaytee and received back a very nice email. They mailed me a postage-paid envelope to return the food to them for testing. That's been about a month ago and I've not heard back.

I have not heard about a recall on this though.

I'm not accusing them of doing anything intentionally harmful, but I do feel that something is wrong with the food.

I do recommend that anyone with concerns contact them. The more people that do this, the more they will take notice.

I'm from Logan, UT, and found this via a Google search.

All 3 of my bunnies just had to be rushed to the vet. They all have undigested food in their stomachs. The pellets they eat are Kaytee Timothy complete. They also get Oxbow hay, but that's been ruled out as a possible cause. If I hadn't taken my bunnies to the vet, they would have died. The bill is massive because each one of my pets is having to stay at the vet, due to the poor condition each one is in. And it seems the pellets could be the only cause of each one's abdominal problems, especially since my 3 are kept separately and I wash my hands between interacting with each one.

Unfortunately, a toxicologist can't magically find one poison out of many -- s/he'll have to have at least an idea of what to look for.

Tonight we came home to 2 dead cockatiels. The only change was we just opened a new bag of Kaytee Exact original last night and fed them. They were fine. They acted completely normal. They have been on this type of food for 2 years with no problems. I sent Kaytee a message to make them aware of the situation. It may be a freak thing or maybe there was in fact a faulty shipment of Kaytee foods. It is just wierd that they both were fine yesterday and less than 24 hours later they both are dead. And then i decided to google and see if anyone else had problems with their food when i found this site.

I posted the comment o 11/4/2008 and I was upset to see the food still being sold at Target. It's just a lawsuit waiting to happen. Do not purchase Kaytee Pet food endorsed by animal planet. I contacted Target but they still have not contacted Kaytee. All 3 of my cockatiels died last year because of the food.

My cocatiel Lucy, died a week after eating Katee
cocatiel food. She was fine untill then. We are devastated she was like a member of our family. It's pretty bad that your beloved pet dies from food that you trust is being tested for problems.
These pets that have been affected are suffering from this product something needs to be done. Do not use Katee products. I have had that bird for 10 yrs she greeted me every moring, my heart is broken.

although i dont doubt that there may be things wrong with some of the food. i think some of you should also realize that you shouldnt change your animals food once they have become used to a certain brand, the change alone could kill them

[My cockatiel was found dead last night, lying on her back with her eyes open. She was 13 years old, so I thought it was old age, but then I read this about the Animal Planet Kaytee "fortified"cockatiel food. I bought it at Target in Franklin, TN. It's halfway gone now.]

My Prissy was 13 and I understand. I was worshiping the Lord this morning and had a picture of Jesus holding her, petting her head and singing to her- just like I did. Maybe this will comfort you too.
Was there a recall on the Kaytee food? That's what Prissy had been eating.

Does Kayee make food for dogs too? I would like to avoid it. My dog will only eat one kind and it was safe in the last huge poison recall with the wheat gluton from China.

To Jenny & Angel, As I am a breeder and owner of Cockatiels, Parakeets, rosey bourkies, I too went to the F.D.A. website and at this time there is no recall for Animal Planet fortified or Animal planet gourmet. I am so sorry for both of your losses. It can be heartwrenching, however what I can tell you is that although they say the average life of a cockatiel is 25 years, it is really meant for those birds in there natural enviroment, meaning in the wild. our cockateils are domesticated and unfornutaley in our homes meaning if you have someone in your home that smokes or some one is cooking with teflon pans(non-stick) room sprays, older birds cages that have lead paint these are just some of the items that can cause the death of the bird. Also, we all love to kiss our birds on the beak or allow them to take food from or mouth or share food, which I learn also not to do as the inside of their beaks is sterile. It is very easy for us to transmit saliva (germs) and this can be a problem for the birds also, even something simple as a sneeze from us. Angel I have only known 2 cockatiels that live to 20yrs old, they were not mine. Jenny you did not say how old your birds were and what type of birds you had. I have been feeding my birds with both animal planet fortified and gourmet for over a year or more with no problems, also i give them millet, scramble egg which is only cooked in stainless steel frying pan, oatmeal cooked in stainless steel pot. continue.... in next note

I think it wonderful that "Prissy" live to be 13, I had a male cockatiel that only live to 6 yrs old and had a sudden heart attack and I had loss one who was only 6 months old to pneumonia. A word of caution also, make sure that the new bird you purchase in the fure is properly weaned as a bird will eat but in a very young bird it cannot digest its food properly--example if you see the bird going back an forth to its food dish to eat every 15 minutes you know the bird is having a problem and return bird back to where you have purchase it--save your receiptfrom the store where you purchased bird. continue... in next note

Jenny I also agree that you should have a autopsy done, but I do know that can be expensive but it would have giving you the answer as to what caused the death of prissy and maybe some closure. I will be contacting the Kaytee company and staying on top of the F.D.A If I get any new information I will post it here, as I have over 50 birds. I would also recommend that you buy your bird food directly from a pet shop if you have other birds in your home, not in bags or boxes, I mean fresh food only, regular pet shop have that. also keep in mind if you are purchasing your bird from places such as Petco, Petsmart or Petland (usually these are only employees working there with very little knowledge or information) or what they are told to say to make the sale of the bird. A regular petshop know its breeder and that can make a big difference when purchasing a bird. Again I am so sorry for both of your losses. Remember when you have the urge to kiss your bird kiss them on their cheek or on top of their head where they cannot reach with their beak when they groom themselves, avoid giving them sweets, salted items, avocado, and change water dish no less than 2 times a day and no chocolate, thats a big no no and watch out for egg binding in the females ( when they have difficulty laying egg. Take care, from Long Island,New York

I'm not sure if this will help reassure any remaining Kaytee products users, but I've been using Kaytee Timothy Hay and the Kaytee Timothy Complete pellets to feed my rabbit for the past 3 years. No problems so far, but she is a very picky rabbit who only likes the Kaytee brand, which is why I have stuck to it.(She refuses to eat Oxbow unfortunately.)

However, I still am nervous about these posted incidents of deaths because it seems that perhaps there can just be bad batches?

I've recently been concerned though because the past few bags I've received of Kaytee timothy hay have varied a lot in appearance (softer feeling with no 'sticks' or 'flowers', brighter green color), and I question if this might be a different hay other than timothy or if this is just differences in 1st cut vs 2nd or 3rd cut timothy hay. Has anyone else observed these wide fluctuations in the timothy hay? I've been getting mine from Petco.

My mother's two very healthy happy birds just died within hours of eating Kaytee Fortified Pro Health food bought at the PetSmart in Hixson TN.

My mom contacted the store but they refused to pull the seed from their shelves unless she could prove it was what caused the birds - both of whom were perfectly fine prior to eating the food- to die.

She's contacted the local news, a vetrinarian, and will be calling the Health Department in the morning.

I lost several hamsters and gerbils last year after feeding them Kaytee food and treats.

As this seems to be ongoing - for years now- I cannot understand how KAYTEE can keep selling it and not acting! They need to issue an immediate recall of these products and compensate those who've lost their pets!

OUTRAGEOUS!

I wish I had seen this before I fed my Conures KAYTE Conure bird seed. I have had the birds for sixteen years, they talked and trained to do tricks. Last night my Sun Conure fell off her perch and staggered as if she was drunk. She was breathing heavy with her mouth open, then she died. The Blue Crown Conure climbed to the bottom of the cage, staggered and died within ten minutes of the other bird. I have called vets, animal hosiptals, the FDA and Health Department. I found out this company is under investigation My birds were healthy, talking and playing but withing four days of this food, they were dead. I was told the seed and peanuts must have had salmonella in them. Thes drunk, heavy breathing are sign of this poisioning. I was instructed to alert all news media for national exposure, whih I have been doing all morning. Please contact the FDA and Health Department in your area. The calls help them to decide to investigate a company.

I wish I had seen this before I lost my beloved Conure parrots that I have owned for sixteen years. My birds were healthy, talking, playing and after feeding them Kaytee Conure food they died within ten minutes of each other. They climbed down to the bottom of the cage acted as if they were drunk, were breathin hard and then fell dead. I am heartbroken. I called my vet and she said it was the symptons of seminala poison from the peanuts. After a lot of vet calls and animal hosiptals, they all agreed it was poison form the peanuts in the food. I was informed to make a report to my health department and the Food and Drug Adm. and I found out the company that makes this food for small animals and birds are under investigation. I ask the FGA how many animals have to die before this food is taken off the market. I bought this food at PetSmart but found out it is sold at Target as well. I was told to get the word out to the media and I have told everyone I can. It is too late for me but maybe if word gets out, I can save other loved pets. I notified PetSmart but the manager said they don't pull food off the shelf until they are notified by the FDA. I notified the company but they haven't responded. Please notify your health department and the FDA so we can get this off the market. The more we complain maybe they will do something about this.
