Anyone with young children knows how important it is to let kids sleep when they are tired. I honestly don't see how this is an unreasonable inquiry given the noise ordinances that are in place.
If the sanitation workers can't finish their route early enough if starting at 8 a.m. then maybe there should be more trucks out there to do so. In the meantime, and since that wil never happen, this mother might want to invest in some white noise machines for each of her kids rooms. It's like sleeping to the hum of the a/c all year round!

Baloney! There is no health reason for the garbage trucks to operate so early. It may be the union,or it may be another reason but its not health. If there is no exemption in the law for garbage pick ups the law applies to them.

If the kids are that tired, they can go back to sleep after the big bad garbageman leaves.

Not everyone wakes up at 5 or 6am like you and your family. You're probably the same annoying neighbor that's in bed by 9 and call the cops to complain about late night noise or people trying to enjoy themselves with late night parties. Many of us get our day started later, but are up well after you are. Stop acting like the world should cater to you. Typical self entitled Long Island schmuck.
Here's the answer, get a job, go to bed early enough to get 8 hours of sleep per night and get up on time for work. You won't even notice the san-men doing their job. AND, if you work hard
all week, you'll be less likely to stay up until the wee hours with your gang of under-achievers getting blind drunk, vomiting on your tee shirts, and annoying your neighbors. Simple concepts for adult humans to grasp.

so lets have the garbage men starting pick ups at 9, and THEN everyone will be complaining that they block traffic flow!! more trucks mean more traffic and more taxes!

If a child is that tired they will sleep thru anything....unless you were the type of mom that everyone had to be quiet when the child was asleep....leave the garbage men alone

A couple of them ruined a perfectly good dinner out for me before.

Parents, please leave your little brats at home so I may enjoy the meal I'm paying for in peace.

Thank you.

Every one of your neighbors hates you and your stupid kids.
I hope the garbage men come even earlier.
Maybe you should blow off an M-80 next to your kid's ears so they lose their hearing and can't hear the garbage trucks.

I realize that this thread is more than a year old, but I thought that instead of criticizing your perfectly normal lifestyle and concerns, I'd actually try to answer your questions. Depending on the type of noise, the ordinances in the Town of Oyster Bay prohibit noise starting at 7AM or 8AM. While not specifically mentioned, the noise in question would probably be subject to a 7AM limit, not 8AM.

Unfortunately for you, emergency, public service utility, and, most importantly, valid municipal functions are exempt from the noise ordinances. Also, the ordinances forbid a "noise disruption", not just any noise whatsoever. Regardless, municipal activities are exempt.

I would normally suggest going to a town board meeting to voice your concerns, but I really can't imagine what they could do to accommodate you that would be practical.

By the way, the noise ordinances can be found in the "code of the Town of Oyster Bay" (easy to find if you Google it), chapter 156.

REAL simple solution: earplugs.
or sound proof the house..
it's only 2 days a week, can't they fall back to sleep?
I work nights and I'm in bed at 5:30 a.m....
sometimes I hear them, sometimes I don't. It's no big deal.

I work for the TOB sanitation department. We just want to do our jobs and go home. We pay taxes too, and garbage trucks wake up our families as well. But we don't complain about it. You people should worry more about the important things in life like family and friends. Not what time we are done. Not what we leave behind. You know what you throw out garbage your entire life. But you know what? You will never know what the actual job entails unless you do it for a living. Believe me it's no cup of tea. But whatever I have to do to make my family happy. I'll do whatever it takes. And think about you only pay $200 a year for pick up of garbage. And believe you fuckin people take advantage. Way to much. And your gonna complain about being woken up. Give me a break. Try living in town of Hempstead where you have to wait a month to have a shoe box picked up.

Sincerely Yours,

You know the garbage collection starts that early so sanitation workers can get to their second job. They do start too early they make a lot of noise going forward and backing up over and over (backup up siren) and screaming and whistling. When they pick up the papers they go up and down each street twice. What a waste of gas. They have come down my street as early as 5:30 am.
