Most people in Chicago look at the Tribune as being the stronger of the 2 dailies but....
One of these days, the Tribune may implode.
Sam Zell is a meglomaniac who way overleveraged the purchase of the company and is desperately trying to piecemeal break it apart before scheduled notes come due.
That's why he came up with the cockamamie idea of selling Wrigley Field to the state so that there would be little or no tax liability- not as a favor to the fans.
The future of the news business is no longer in print. The paper as a commodity is worth much less than the owners think. It is the news operation which can and is being morphed into the online entity that holds the greatest value.
However, that will also dissipate if the Tribune and other online operations decide to charge users for viewing the content.

The Sun Times has a better sports department full of pro writers who are allowed to speak their mind and have retooled the paper in general to be more like an adjunct or
recap sheet for fololwing up detail online.
Barring being bought by greedy owners as has been done previously, they may outlast the Trib as a viable print product.

gee, well thank you captain gloom and doom.

it was the previous owners who ran the company into the ground. they bought times mirror for too much money and then never seriously worked to blend the newspaper cultures. more than that, they were smug and condescending toward l.a., a fact which did not escape notice on the left coast.

tribune absolutely should sell the cubs, and if zell *quelle surprise!* tries to structure the best real estate deal, so what?

meanwhile, sun times has be de-listed from the stock exchange because its value slipped below a dollar a share.
