First of all... don't move to Melbourne unless you have an extremely compelling reason to do so. The place is boring and the weather is simply miserable. Having said that... Try the Viera/Suntree area. Good luck and again, think long and hard about moving here. This area is about to become even more economically depressed than it already is.

"The place is boring and the weather is simply miserable."----that's just your opinion, and not a widely held one at that.

"This area is about to become even more economically depressed than it already is."----sadly, that is likely to become fact.

If the assertion that the weather is miserable is not a widely held opinion then why do thousands of people pack up and leave every April and stay gone until Thanksgiving?

As for the boring... ask anyone who's lived here for more than a month. The place is known to locals as "Melboring". I never knew what the phrase "bored to death" meant until I moved here. If you don't fish, golf or surf, you're out of luck.

They pack up and leave for the summer because they can then get the warm sunny weather up North while being closer to the kids/grandkids.

If you don't fish, golf, or surf, then WHAT do you do?

Those activities are plenty enjoyable for many. If your real passion is snow skiing, then yes look elsewhere.

If you don't have any outdoor hobbies, then really you could live anywhere, makes no difference where. Melbourne, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Modesto, doesn't matter. Just wherever you can find work and a Walmart.

I love the outdoors and lead a very active lifestyle; one that doesn't fit well with high heat and oppressive humidity. As for other activities such as arts / culture / wine festivals and the like well, Melbourne has nothing to offer. It's a very quiet retirement community. I suppose if I was 80 and had spent 70 years of my life in North Dakota I might find it appealing but even then, thre are other parts of Florida that are far better. Anyway, I'll be moving to a more suitable climate rather shortly.

Just moved here from Sacramento CA. Love the beach being five minutes from the house. Just hit the downtown street festival and the car show yesterday. The heat was 90 and somewhat sticky, but at least the air was not brown! Check out the many small resturants. This place has them all over. Love the lack of traffic, roads that don't destroy my car, and schools that are not being taken over by the state. Melbourne may be boring, but at least I have not experienced the daily car jacking or home invasion that was a common occurance in Sacramento. We also like the abliltity to head to Canaveral and take a cruise. Drive to Orlando and see all that fun filled stuff. Go North to St. Augustine or visit Daytona Beach and drive on the sand. This place is central to alot, but has alot - just come visit for a few weeks and check it out!

yea tellan1 it is not a bad area ,there is a lot to do if you just are willing to see it.being close enough to the action as to walk is nice but it also comes along with a price heavy traffic ,higher cost of living and more crime. There is a lot to do here and close by .weather of the winter ,fall and spring are great.Great schools also.

You'd better REALLY love the heat and I'm not talking 10 days of triple digits in July. It's been at or above 90 for over 130 days so far this year - reaching all the way back to FEBRUARY - and we aren't finished yet. I'll leave it to you to imagine what the heat index is when the air temp is hovering near 90. Oh, and you can forget about cool fronts and occassionally sleeping with your windows open during the summer. If you are lucky you can shut off the air conditioning around Thanksgiving (of course last year it was about 85 degrees that day) and maybe, just maybe, you'll make it to Tax Day before it goes back on for 6 months.

Make sure you really think this through. I know many people who moved here and promptly went back where they came from (I plan to be one of them soon). Best of luck to you.

I think most people should understand that florida is hot after all its the sub tropics,I work outside and it didnt take me long to get acustomed to the heat.I come from a area in te mountains where -20 is not uncommon. If I moved to washington state I would be prepared for a lot of cloudy days with rain.If I moved to florida one would think they would be prepared for warm days with lots of sun.If I moved back home I would be prepared for cold and snow of the winter.I would think most people would be smart enough to consider these factors and not live in a dream world.florida has become the 4th most populated state because of its climate ,hunting fishing and beaches, people arew not moving here because it sucks.great schools and lots to do and sunny and warm.

Hunting?? Are you kidding me? When and where do you go hunting? I guess you enjoy 85-degree hunts in banana spider-infested palmettos.

Fishing: boring
Golf: boring
Laying on the beach: boring
Boating: too damn hot
Hiking: impossible
Skiing: impossible
Running / jogging: dangerous
Arts/Entertainment: hours away
Quality shopping: hours away

Florida is great if you just want to sit in an air-conditioned home and wait to die.

Minor point... Having lived in a nothern climate I'm certain it was not -20 for 130+ days each year. It's the monotony / boredom that bugs me the most but I guess some people like the laid back, do-nothing lifestyle. To each his own I suppose. Cheers,

well sneed I must respectivly disagree with you to a point.your replys were .
Fishing: boring
Golf: boring
Laying on the beach: boring
Boating: too damn hot
Hiking: impossible
Skiing: impossible

many people enjoy the above things and thats a fact.of course there are those who only want to be in 72 degree weather. If that was the case you probally should of never moved to florida in the first place,as i said its the sub tropics common sense would tell you its warm in the sub tropics.millions of people come to florida for vacation to see our beachs ,enjoy fishing etc.yes skiing is not possible .I was at one time a snowboarder and worked at a ski resort. The perfect place for it is Alaska mountains .they also have beachs hunting hiking ,fishing and boating and shopping and the arts.of course you will need a small plane or a dog sled to get to them.shopping here in the local area is ok,granted you can not find everything but I dont do a lot of mall hopping except a xmass and the internet has become the main shopping tool for many.Arts well you do have a point there very limited locally.but you have several places in florida where some for of arts are displayed and all are in a reasonable drive.Brevard county is not my home but I find it pleasent and a good place to live.its clean reasonable costs far more shopping than I need, good schools and police force ,goverment her is reasonablly responsable ,work if you are willing ,people from all over the world.I can see many places being second rate compared to here.its not a bad place to live.the truth is you make the best of what you have in life and go with it.I lived in LA at one time you had a lot to do there skiing was close by the ocean mountains there was art there also lots of traffic very high crime ,it was super expensive compared to here but I made the best of it and thats how I loook at it.every place has its ups and downs no place is perfect.

I guess Sneed is complaining to complain, right?
Theres plenty to do here, the only people I hear that think so are high schoolers who won't get off their asses.
Also, Melbourne has so many art festivities and studios, are you numb? Eau Gallie has a monthly art walk coinciding with a showing from EGAD!. Along with that, students at BCC display art in the hall.
The shows at the King Center are pretty entertaining too. Then Beachside here there are plenty of beach accesses, apart from the condos, Theres good surf and good food.
I've grown up in Florida, I do plan on moving, but hey, I have to admit, I adore it here. Beachtown life can be lax or busy,
it depends on You. Its not 'The place is boring' its that apparently, You are boring. What, no friends to call you up and say 'Hey, lets go paintball, or go swimming in the Banana'
I have not had a lax weekend since I was in the second grade.
Melbourne is anything But boring.
