Gust Avrakotos carried out the nuts and bolts part of a mission that spawned the defeat of the Soviet Union liberating millions from oppression. The blowback from this mission in the form of Osama Bin Laden is due to the inept end game that the US government engaged in over the objections of Avrakotos. Instead of follwing through with a post-war stability plan for Afghanistan and Pakistan we walked away. That is part that is not real smart but unfortunately typical of our foreign policy. Avrakotos is a hero for his role.

He also helped establish a military junta through a coop in greece in 1967, depriving the greek people of basic civil liberties for 7 years and leading to the Cyprus massacre.. but that's another story, i agree with the idea promoted by the movie that the afgan people after the war were extremely poor and thus an easy target for islamic fundamentalism ideas. My question is: does anyone know where the name Gust comes from? i am greek too so i m really curious
