Its safe as long as if your not familiar with our beaches you go where there are life guards. If you are a good swimmer and want to risk it she needs to watch the news in the am. They will report if there are rips, how strong. A lot of the time in the summer we call it lake Atlantic and its just that a lake. Hope that helps. If she is staying at a hotel she can check with the front desk.

Many tourists underestimate the power of even the tiny waves that wash up here in Melbourne. I see unawares novices get pounded by the surf on average, small days. Your daughter should be sure to swim with a buddy and near lifeguards, as Orthopod suggests. The rip currents are actually more dangerous after the waves calm down, and will easily suck you out over your head and there is nothing you can do about it. Must be a good, confident swimmer and know how to properly react; that is not to panic but to swim parallel to shore until free from the rip, then swim to shore. People panic when they realize the rip is too strong to fight, and end up drowning. A level head and some confidence in ones' swimming ability is all it takes to be safe. I hope she has a blast-

Thanks so much for the comments!! I am telling her to stick to the pool!!! Unless she is at a beach with a lifeguard. All comments are appreicated.

There are many well guarded beaches in the area, any public access with ample parking has at least two guard towers and our Brevard County life guards are all well trained professionals. The beach is a ton of fun, as long as we respect the ocean. Surf's up!
